At the recent 2020 ARC Advisory Group Orlando Forum, ARC Vice President Craig Resnick interviewed Inductive Automation’s Chief Strategy Officer Don Pearson and its Co-Director of Sales Engineering Travis Cox. Inductive Automation is an industrial software company with a focus on both information technology (IT) and operations technology (OT). Inductive Automation’s flagship line is its Ignition 8 software and industrial application platform, with numerous tools for building solutions in human-machine interface (HMI), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In this podcast, Don and Travis will discuss the industrial software market and how digital transformation is impacting Inductive Automations software platforms, solutions, its partner ecosystem, and its customers, which ranges from process plants, factories, and smart cities.

ARC Advisory Group conducted an industry survey back in 2019. We learned that out of 365 industry practitioners 2/3 believe reliability-centered maintenance is not doing enough to improve reliability. We also learned the operations department has almost as much impact on plant asset performance as the maintenance organization does.
When we spoke with leaders in the process industries they believe that while, historically, maintenance groups have been the custodian of the reliability process, digitalization requires a rethinking of the overall asset performance strategy.
New digital technologies can augment many maintenance, reliability, and operational processes to an unprecedented degree and these are changing how people work.
Approaches such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 have helped pave the way for digital transformation across a broad range of industrial sectors. These new approaches have made their way into Asset Performance Management programs to improve the maintenance and operations work processes and overall business performance.

Organizations in the process industries in refining, chemicals, petrochemicals face clear and relentless pressure to improve profitability while managing operational risk, maximizing asset integrity, and enabling operational discipline.
What is not so clear is how industrial organizations can take advantage of new technologies and an intelligent approach to gain more value from their data, assets, workforces, and value chains.
ARC believes a fresh approach is required for world-class business performance, and there is an opportunity to re-think operations management. New Operational platforms and systems should be the foundation for a company standard for the conduct of operations, enhanced compliance assurance, workforce competency, and asset performance management.
Many industrial organizations operate in environments that present a potential risk to workers, the environment, physical assets, and/or the business itself.
Recognizing this, a handful of technology suppliers have developed the correct approaches to interoperability and the platforms to provide deeper visibility into operational, production and asset performance.

In recent years, thanks to further advances in digitalization, the ongoing convergence of OT and IT, and the overall digital transformation of industry and infrastructure, the process industries are gradually moving from “automated” to “autonomous” operations in selected areas. This may also be referred to as "Autonomation". This move presents the opportunity to further advance safe operations and improve overall business value. Furthermore, in addition to minimizing the inevitable human errors, autonomous operations could go a long way toward helping solve the growing issue of finding qualified personnel to run these facilities, many that operate continuously, 24/7. With artificial intelligence (AI)-driven autonomous systems making decisions related to both normal and abnormal operations, this burden could potentially be removed from humans.
