Romans 14:10-12. “God is the Judge” “But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.” If you’re holding someone in contempt you are in contempt because God is the judge. The tell-tale sign that we’re playing God is an attitude of contempt, because being fleshly we cannot (yet) handle the seat of justice, and so whenever we climb up there we become contemptuous, both in our attitudes and in the eyes of the Judge. We must never assume that people are as they appear because we can’t see to the heart, nor do we know how far they’ve come from where they were, nor what they’re up against. (I’ll give some real life examples of this.) The dangers of Pharisaic moralism among evangelicals that creeps in without our even knowing it. “Search me, O God, and know me…” Billy Graham set the example in the Clinton years when (to the great anger of many evangelicals) he said “I forgive him. I know the frailty of human nature.” How you see is just as important as what you see.
