In the series, DMs Are Open sees show hosts Athena Kugblenu and Ali Official dissecting the big stories alongside Mamoun Elagab, Barney Fishwick and Lucia Keskin. Tune in for sketches, one-liners and voice notes about the cast of Cluedo sharing a tiny flat, a Millennial Old Folks home, and how Headspace are diversifying their brand.

Building on the success of Newsjack, DMs Are Open provides opportunities for up-and-coming writers and performers to break into the industry, for example with a voice notes section of the show hearing directly from the public themselves. The satirical sketch show is loosely topical, reflecting online conversations and trends through a heady cocktail of comedy formats. This broader playing field is designed to attract a wide range of submissions and will reflect pop culture, hot takes and the political and social zeitgeist.

While the first series was topical, the second series follows a non-topical format and and will be recorded in front of an audience.

It’s That Man Again is a giant in the history of radio comedy. As Mat Coward’s book Classic Radio Comedy says, “Surely the most written-about radio series in history, it was successful to an extent which is hard to imagine today. Its international audience was measured in the tens of millions. Its star, Tommy Handley, was undoubtedly the most popular performer, in any field, ever known in Britain.”

In the 1930s the British newspapers, tired of the constant repetition of news items featuring Hitler, took to referring to him obliquely as That Man. A catchphrase quickly caught on, supposedly begun by the Daily Express, whereby Hitler’s activities were refered to sarcastically using the newspaper headline It’s that man again!

With the then-current craze for reducing everything to an acronym, that headline, reduced to its initials ITMA, became the title of the BBC’s latest radio comedy series, launched in 1939, with the twist that the term ‘that man’ was used in the show to also allude to its star, the stage comedian Tommy Handley.

It became the ultimate catchphrase comedy series: Can I do you now, sir? Don’t forget the diver, sir! I don’t mind if I do so, sir! This is Funf calling!

William Keenan was an English journalist, playwright and novelist.

He wrote a regular column for the Catholic Herald and was the author of three mystery novels and numerous plays for BBC Radio. Collected here are seven full-cast BBC Radio plays written by Keenan over three decades.

Late Into the Night – A modern spy-thriller, set mainly in Germany. Doris is getting strange telephone calls from someone in Germany trying to reach her boss, Michael Hayward, who is out of the office. When the stranger finally gets hold of Hayward, it’s an old army mate, Dave Owen Thomas, who he hasn’t seen in 15 years. Dave sounds very agitated saying that he’s in trouble and asks Mike to fly over and help him out. Mike arrives in Germany, but the hotel room David is supposed to be in is occupied by an elderly English gentleman. Early the next morning Michael is awoken by the hotel manager advising that the elderly English gentleman has fallen from an upper floor window – he is still barely alive and is asking for Michael. When Michael arrives, the old man asks him if he reads poetry. When Michael says yes the old man whispers in his ear so that no-one else can hear: “Late into the night…” before dying. Now, the German police are wondering what Michael has to do with his death?

Frank Thornton played the unforgettable Captain Peacock in TV sitcom Are You Being Served?. He also appeared in the role of Herbert ‘Truly’ Truelove in the hugely popular TV sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. BAFTA award winning actress Annette Crosbie OBE is best known for her role as Margaret Meldrew in the BBC sitcom One Foot in the Grave.
