    Episode 44: Dealing With The Morning After

    Drink of the Day- The Italian Gentleman

     

    Ingredients

    • 1 1/2 ounces Campari
    • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon
    • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
    • 1/4 ounce simple syrup
    • Dash of orange bitters (optional)
    •  

      • Shake with ice and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

      Steam room at the spa

      In. Room. Coffee.

      Pork products and a Bloody Mary.


      John’s Survival Strategies:

      Pregame with electrolytes and vitamin B

      Don’t go hard the night before departure

      Shower, coffee, bacon- repeat if necessary

      • Bill- The Guardian, in a July 2 story debating whether the As stadium ever gets actually built, notes that construction costs are increasing daily and that John Fisher has seen costs rise from 1.5B to 1.75B– an increase of $250,000,000 for a project that already has strained financing.

        • John- Scott @ Vital Vegas is reporting “substantial layoffs” at Treasure Island amongst room attendants, cooks, servers, and bartenders.

          • Bill- Chelsea Leite, writing for SBNation.com, says the dynasty era for the Las Vegas Aces may be over. After winning the championship in 2022 and 2023 and making a strong run in 2024, they are as of July 5 sitting at 8-9 on the season. They are 10th in points per game, 12th in field goal percentage, and 11th in assists per game. What do you think about catching major sports in Las Vegas?

            • John- According the the New York Post and multiple other sources, Kelly Clarkson cancelled the Independence Day debut of her new residency at Caesars, blaming tired vocal chords in preparing for the show and wanting it to be perfect. The cancellation happened hours before the show. What would fair be to the fans if you have travelled to Vegas just to see this show? What would happen to your refund if you bought the ticket on the secondary market?

              • Bill- Fox 5 and other sources are reporting that there was a fire in a storage room in the parking structure at the Cromwell. Sprinklers contained the fire, and the Las Vegas Fire Department responded to the scene. Pictures show smoke billowing out of the parking garage.

                • John- According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, the 2028 Final Four will be held in Allegiant Stadium. Do you remember when major sports were still hesitant to go to Vegas?

                        1 ounce gold demerara rum
                        1 ounce white Cuban or Puerto Rican rum
                        1 ounce honey syrup*
                        3/4 ounce club soda, chilled
                        3/4 ounce grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed
                        3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
                        Garnish: mint sprig
                        Garnish: lime wheel

                        1 oz Aged Trinidad Rum

                        1 oz Aged Demerara Rum

                        1 oz Aged Jamaican Rum

                        ¼ oz Allspice Dram (AKA Pimento Dram)

                        ¼ oz Demerara Syrup

                        ¾ oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice

                        ¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice

                        1 Mint Sprig

                        Whichever ingredient list you choose (or your own variation thereof,) shake everything BUT club soda with ice, strain over crushed ice in a tiki glass,top with club soda is you are using Don’s version, and garnish.

                        • casino.org, which actually publishes more than just Scott Roeben’s Vital Vegas blog, is reporting that Wynn might get as much as $1 billion for 38 unused acres on the Strip. They had development plans before the pandemic, but now might invest those funds overseas. Wynn has not said that the land is for sale, however.

                          • We haven’t reported on Lake Mead levels in a long time, because last year was a wet year. Newsweek is reporting that levels are again declining precipitously. Please be thoughtful about your water consumption when you go to Las Vegas.

                            • The Las Vegas Review Journal reports that the site for the A’s stadium has been largely graded, and they have now drilled holes in the ground for concrete and reinforcing steel. It increasingly seems that this is a real thing which will actually happen.

                              • According to thestreet.com, Brad Paisley closed his residency at The Encore May 10. Setting aside that Bill may be the only Brad Paisley fan to even stay at The Encore, how do you feel about superstar residencies in Las Vegas as opposed to the Fremont Street concert you happen to pass?

                              • Jacob’s Life In Vegas reports that slots are actually looser on the Strip than Downtown - this jive’s with John’s rule of thumb: Downtown for Video poker or table games, the Strip for slots

                                • The New York Post reports that Katy Perry’s 3 year residency at Resorts World cost the hotel a lot of money. She wants to return, but is unwanted. She was getting paid between $750,000 and $900,000 per show. The residency ran from 2021 to 2023.
