(piano music) Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!
Although this is a Greek word it wasn’t created by the Greeks and I say ‘created’ because it’s a combined one. Δεινός (dinos) means ‘terrible’ or in this case ‘mighty’. Σαύρα (savra) means ‘lizard’. In 1841 the palaeontologist Sir Richard Owen decided to name the fossils of extinct reptiles that had been found but had not been named. ΔΕΙΝΟΣΑΥΡΟΙ/DINOSAURS
