It establishes the presence of a traumatic event that has caused significant distress to the individual. Criterion A recognizes the traumatic nature of the event, acknowledging the profound impact it can have on an individual's mental and emotional well-being. It serves as the foundation for further assessment and examination of PTSD symptoms to determine the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
