In this thought-provoking episode, Jackson and Dr. Elinor Grusin further explore the profound impact of the Teen Appeal on the students of Memphis City Schools and the local journalism scene. Historically, news organizations have been predominantly homogenous, with news staff and management consisting mostly of white men. One of the main objectives of the Teen Appeal was to address this imbalance by exposing students who would not typically be introduced to journalism, to the field. Incredibly, 95 percent of the students working with the Teen Appeal were African American, bringing fresh perspectives, diverse stories and new faces to the newsroom. Through the Teen Appeal, Grusin, the TA staff and students actively worked toward creating a more inclusive and diverse media landscape that better reflected the community they served.
