Paul's intention is to ultimately show us how we can be "right" with God. But in the lead up to this, he pulls no punches in showing us how we are not right with God. No person is sinless, so we can't be right with God by our own efforts. Any attempt to do so is futile and pointless. Our only hope is to be rescued by a saviour.

We don't like the idea of being judged, by anybody. But God's Word tells us that God is going to judge us - Christians and non-Christians alike. Everything we see in Creation points to God as Creator. But we don't want to have to submit to His authority over all things (particularly our own lives), so Romans 1 says we suppress the truth about God and live how we want to - ignoring Him. But it comes at a cost.

Paul's opening words in his letter to the Roman church summarise the Gospel and point to the two-fold response of belief and obedience. As Christians, we have the privilege and the authority to declare the Good News of the Gospel to others.
