Discipleship Conversations

The journey of church planting can sometimes be like traveling a long, winding road, with lots of twists and turns. In this episode, we talk to Wes and Amanda Gunn about church planting, their journey in planting Redland Hills Church, and how their family has been involved in their church plant.

To contact the Gunns, please go to http://redlandhills.org (Redland Hills Church's website).

Welcome to Season 3! In this season we are partnering with Mission Alive to help spread awareness of church planting, and to do that we are featuring interviews with Mission Alive church planters.

In this episode (part 2 of a 2-part series), we talk with Tod Vogt, Executive Director of Mission Alive, about Mission Alive's purpose and how that purpose extends to offering discipleship and coaching training and resources to churches and church leaders. We focus on how a strong underpinning of discipleship creates a healthy church structure, and how a coaching posture enables leaders to facilitate growth in others in healthy ways.

As a next step to this podcast, we encourage you to sign up for a Mission Alive Discipleship Cohort. As a special bonus, you may request either Jeremy or Steven to be your cohort leader.

What does theological reflection look like? How can a church engage in missional theological reflection to help it discover where God is working and how that church is being sent?

In this episode, we talk for a second time with Greg McKinzie, one of the authors of Discipleship in Community, and we explore the questions above, along with other themes related to the book, discipleship, the church, and God's mission.

You can find out more about Greg's work at his http://scriptureandmission.com (website). In this episode, Greg recommends http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/missional-theology/289300 (Missional Theology by John R. Franke) as a resource.

Discipleship in community inevitably leads to diversity. There is a simplicity to discipleship, yet the implications on what is prioritized and what a life following Jesus looks like will be varied. How we see things is rooted in our lived experience, and not everyone in a community will see things the same way. In this episode we bring our discussion about Discipleship in Community to a close as we talk about what discipleship in community means and could look like.

For me (Jeremy), my background in mission in my formative years was an emphasis on personal evangelism and overseas missions. "Mission" has only lately been broadened for me to understand God's purposes and my participation in those purposes.

What is your understanding of what the mission of God is?

Does the way you take communion (the Lord's Supper) in your church seem stale, or does your church's approach to baptism seem washed out?

What do these two very important acts mean? What does it mean to view them sacramentally?

Join Steven and I in this episode as we talk further about https://www.amazon.com/Discipleship-Community-Theological-Vision-Future/dp/1684264103/ (Discipleship in Community) Chapter 6, specifically about how we can build on our strengths and regain theological depth behind these two heritage-defining events.

This chapter was so interesting to us that we are presenting it in two parts!

In part 1, we discuss our own growing understanding and immersion in the sacramental nature of our tradition. Join us as we talk about the strengths of our heritage in baptism and the Lord's Supper.

What does it mean for a church family to be committed to intentional discipleship? How do the different activities of the church, including the worship service, function intentionally towards that end?

Join Steven Carrizal and Jeremy Hoover in this episode, as they discuss Chapter 5 of https://www.amazon.com/Discipleship-Community-Theological-Vision-Future/dp/1684264103/ (Discipleship in Community), and talk about how the historical "Believers Church" framework provides the frame for the church to be both intentional about its discipleship and a community with a distinct ethic through its discipleship.
