The chapters are organized by microbial strains, and each chapter gives background on the known facts of the particular microbe, as well public policy and history related to it. While the subject of the audio is scientific, Levitt pries into all related areas: homicide, deadly outbreaks, and the successes and failures of those people working to stop these invisible, deadly killers. Listeners will be shocked and terrified by what they will learn - but ultimately grateful to be more informed.

Not the top of the class...

Although this book deals with a subject which I find endlessly fascinating, I must conclude it was a disappointment.

The writing is uninspired and sloppy. Perhaps the author would have benefited from a co-author with more varied and interesting prose style, or at least a keen-eyed editor. One glaring mess that stand out in my mind is when a patient with Hanta virus is described as "going into cardiac arrest, and shock." Pretty sure that should be the other way around, which I assume the author knows. Unfortunately, careless errors like that make it hard to lend much credence.

I'm not sure if the print version is any more enjoyable but this was not a good audio version. Narrated by Julie McKay, it is delivered like an instruction manual for assembling furniture. She spells out abbreviations and acronyms constantly ("U-S-A-M-R-I-I-D") instead of utilizing common pronunciations.

Could be better but not useless

Provides general dictionary like descriptions of medically important viruses, bacteria, & fungi. It covers basic clinical significance, transmission, some characteristics & common treatment. Does not include any parasitology. The most time is spent on viruses. Less than 2 hours of material.

I bought this book so I could continue studying whilst on the move - it was a waste of money. The 'facts' were inaccurate.

A good quick go-through for who want to review microbiology

There were not much detailed contents regarding pathogenesis for sure, but it's good for people wanna spend a little time on reviewing some general information about different pathogens. I used it last year when doing microbiology and still found it pretty good to just refresh the memory a bit.

What would have made Audio Learn: 2012 Medical Terminology better?

If it was correct. There were many errors. It was boring.

What could AudioLearn Editors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Really? Just leave broke alone. Needed new narrator, information and honestly someone who is in the field to read medical terms.

Maybe good for other books just not medical narrations.

Good Med Terms book for price

This is a short book, but it was under $8. I've been able to hear and learn some words and re-remember others I've read or studied in my textbook required for class.

I've listened to it in the car while driving to and from work, and that's been good, unless I'm tired. there is no story line, or uses of the words, just a reading of the Med Terms.

Again, still worth the new bucks it cost.

Anatomy of an Epidemic. Both provide invaluable information about pharmaceuticals, both are scrupulously researched

Which character as performed by Jonathan Cowley was your favorite?

Like most people, I assumed that the process by which prescriptions meds were approved met the highest of scientific standards. I am a researcher by training and I understand that while meeting such standards is difficult, it isn't optional. Goldacre's review of the process is a bit dramatic in tone, but his facts are verifiable and his case is quite credible. As a psychologist, this information is particularly valuable to me. Most of my clients take some kind of medication, and all assume that these meds are proven safe and effective. The more I know about the efficacy and safety of medications, the better able I am to work with my clients and their doctors (many of whom ALSO assume all meds are safe and effective, compliments of the FDA)

Read this book before you prescribe again

What did you love best about Bad Pharma?

The author pulls down the curtain of deception that has been held before our eyes by the drug makers. Here in one volume, the author tells the whole story of what they are really up to. There is no step in the process of bringing a drug to market that has not been corrupted. Step by step, the author systematically and thoroughly goes through all of the ways drug development and sales are adversely impacted by the drug industry.Very early in the book, I came realize that, because the medical literature is so corrupted, physicians (such as myself) do not have a true understand about the medicines we prescribe.

This book is quite a bit different than most books I read or listen to so that is a difficult question to answer and I will leave blank.

Clinton Wade seemed to do OK for how the book is written. Lots of information and not many chances for expression of emotions even though he seemed to do well when there was.

This is a good book with an open mind. I really wish the Author would not have obsessed with the differences in diagnosis. For example, a diagnosis of Bipolar disorder even though it is a psychological disorder Bipolar disorder can be derived from physical or mental abuse creating a psychological disorder. So his argument against what we call Autism is a waste of time for me. Even though I think what he says could absolutely be right about treating someone with Autism.
