The beginning of slavery can be marked when humans began to settle down. As cities and towns began to take shape and people began to conquer lands so that they could grow food for their people is when the concept of slavery began. Wars and battles were the time when slaves were taken and free labour was used as household and field help. Besides the wars the pirates also sold their captives as slaves for money and sometimes there were criminals who were given the punishment to spend their lives as slaves. Even a debt that couldnt be paid on time would lead to servitude. Slavery was more evil in the ancient civilizations as it would carry on for generations a slaves child would automatically be a slave. However, most families prohibit the slaves from raising families. There was slavery in every civilization but their positions in the respective societies were quite different.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Chancellorsville and Gettysburg" (1882) is a war memoir by Abner Doubleday.
    From the preface:
In writing this narrative, which relates to the decisive campaign which freed the Northern States from invasion, it may not be out of place to state what facilities I have had for observation in the fulfilment of so important a task. I can only say that I was, to a considerable extent, an actor in the scenes I describe, and knew the principal leaders on both sides, in consequence of my association with them at West Point, and, subsequently, in the regular army. Indeed, several of them, including Stonewall Jackson and A. P. Hill, were, prior to the war, officers in the regiment to which I belonged. As commander of the Defences of Washington in the spring of 1862, I was, owing to the nature of my duties, brought into intimate relations with the statesmen who controlled the Government at the time, and became well acquainted with President Lincoln.
Artist Bio Author: Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War, fighting from Fort Sumter to Gettysburg.

This is a review of the free Kindle version.
It's 2,904 locations long, and covers Doubleday's views of two Civil War campaigns. It's interesting reading for anybody interested in the Civil War, and his views on the generals, as usually the case with the Civil War, is worth reading.

This Book Makes Learning History Fun
I am really impressed with this book. It is an anthology of 22 well-known historical figures. It is geared toward children. It is not incredibly deep but points out the accomplishments that would be impressive for kids. In addition to hearing/reading the content, there is a spot at the end of each chapter for the reader to share what they just heard with a friend/student or, if one is alone, out loud to himself. It is a great way of learning and reiterating information.
Adam Gold is perfect for narrating this book. He makes the history come alive and is very engaging. 5 stars

    Good!
I really enjoyed these biographies. I listened to this with my teenager and we both learned a lot. Narration was really well done.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. The fact that I was gifted this book had no influence over my opinion of it
    Great read
Difference Makers by Claudia Reif Barrett was a good read. This book is a collection of many influential men and women. It talked about their lives and what made them influential.
    Disappointing
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I feel quite disappointed by this book. Its three hours long, separated into really quick, short biographies of 22 different people. It felt really rushed, and it was American centred. As such it didnt really feel like a biography to me, but it was too chronologically informative to be a trivia book.
However, the information that was in the book was good, and I particularly liked the ending of each chapter, where you are told the reflect on the great person that youve heard about. I really liked that.
    Great Role Models
I enjoyed listening to these short bios of great people. We all need to learn from history. The common denominators of these people are good character, determination, and selflessness. We can all benefit from their lives. This book is not only good for young people, but for everyone who want to be inspired to leave a legacy after he is gone! I also liked the prompt at the end of each biography to try to remember what we just listened. Great! Please keep writing books like this one so I can give them to my grandchildren!
The narration by Adam Gold was absolutely wonderful! He has a clear voice, was engaging and made it fun to listen.
I receive this audiobook free for my honest opinion. Thank you!

Title: Philippines' Resistance: The Last Allied Stronghold in the Pacific
Author: Stacey Anne Baterina Salinas, Klytie Xu
    Narrator: Megan Scharlau
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-22-17
    Publisher: Pacific Atrocities Education
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The people of the Philippine Islands during the early half of the 20th century experienced various waves of Western imperialism, two wars of attempted secession from Western powers, and two world wars. And yet the Philippine Islands and its people have received only small subheadings in many American textbooks and histories.
The wartime experiences from the perspectives of the Philippine people have gone unnoticed and have become overshadowed by the sociopolitical dominating legacy of American figures like General MacArthur, leader and historical symbol of the Pacific Theater during World War II. MacArthurs famous phrase I came through and shall return is etched into every facet of World War II historical narratives, textbooks, and monuments that pay tribute to the Allied forces in the retaking of the Pacific from the Japanese. But It is the lesser known people and leaders of the Philippine resistance against the Axis powers whose efforts and contributions allowed for the effective and speedy return of MacArthurs military forces.
The Philippine guerrilla resistance consisted of a diverse cast of Filipino men and women, ethnic and indigenous minorities, American and European immigrants and soldiers, young and old, rich and poor, from farmer to politician. The various units of Philippine guerrillas, their tactics, military resources, and vigor to survive and end the Japanese maltreatment of the Philippine peoples paint the Pacific Theater from 1941-1945 as desperate, dark, and bloody for Asian communities throughout East and Southeast Asia. But their resourcefulness, cooperative efforts to collaborate and network with MacArthur across the South Pacific, and massive grassroots liberation movement directly point to the remarkable value that the Philippine Underground Resistance proved to be in aiding the Allies ability to retake the Pacific.

    A powerful book to read.
Philippinesâ Resistance was a very illuminating and educational book to read. It shows about the true heroes of the WWII in the Philippines, and just by looking at the gorgeous cover, you see the power and the will of the people.
This book showed how these heroes fought for survival and freedom and fought for others in those horrible times. It's a short but well-written book, full of captivating images that helped a lot to connect to the history and to the people in the book.
The book showed the history through the locals eyes and those who fought for the land, and how they had to survive and what they needed to do, in order to overcome the horrors of the war.
It was a powerful book to read and very knowledgeable, I was really loving the information on a place I know very little of, and gave me the chance to learn more about this beautiful land and about the power of the people

"We have men and we have rocks in plenty, but we have nothing else." - Dost Mohammad Khan to John Lawrence
In the 21st century, as NATOs operation against the Taliban and al-Qaeda has dragged on for over a decade, the old maxim that Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires has been revived. Indeed, the rugged, desolate, and mountainous region was a place that many Westerners likely could not have found on a map before the attacks of September 11, and now the nation's border with Pakistan is one of the worlds hottest spots. Thanks to Afghanistan and the "Af-Pak" theater, people continue to learn about groups like the Haqqani Network, NATOs struggles to subdue the Taliban and affiliated militants in Afghanistan are merely the latest chapter in Afghanistans very turbulent history. Well before the current conflict, Afghanistan frustrated the Soviet Union, and various tribes and religions have attempted to gain traction there over the last several centuries. The history of Afghanistan is a lesson in convolution.
How did Afghanistan get to where it is today, at the forefront of global affairs? The history of Afghanistan and its people stretch back several centuries, and it is a unique history of empire, culture, pride, and religious nationalism. The History of Afghanistan comprehensively and descriptively covers this history, progressing through a timeline dating back to antiquity and examining all of the different religious, political, foreign and military issues that affect Afghanistan and are affected by Afghanistan today. The History of Afghanistan will bring listeners up to speed on one of the worlds crucial countries today.
