Filmmaker David M. Weiss brought his action-thriller Black Luck to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2016 and then came back to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival with his incredibly touching and inspiring film Kap, shot entirely in Haiti about the practice of “restavek” (to stay with) which is a form of child slavery affecting over 300,000 children in Haiti.

David and I recorded this virtual interview on July 27, 2019, long before virtual chats became standard procedure during 2020’s pandemic.

Soon after we recorded this, I got unlucky and through a series of unfortunate events many podcasts that I had recorded got mothballed.  The good news is that you finally get to hear this smart, enthusiastic filmmaker talk about his craft!

I got lucky and in December of 2019 Lonnie was visiting Los Angeles and took a break from his busy schedule to sit down for a Discover Indie Film interview.

Caroline O’Brien & James Medeiros first appeared on this podcast because their short film “Puppet Life” was a huge hit at the 2016 Sherman Oaks Film Festival.  Soon “Puppet Life” joined the first season of the Discover Indie Film TV series on Amazon Prime Video.

We recorded a second interview because their follow up “Puppet Life 2: Human Dating,” which pulled in awards at the 2018 Sherman Oaks Film Festival, became a part of the second season of Discover Indie Film.

This interview is the kind of chat people have when they have done two festival Q&A’s, a podcast interview, and two Oscar special podcasts.  In other words, I’m almost too familiar with these two wonderful people to have done a proper interview.

David Aufdembrinke, the filmmaker behind the award winning film “DREAM/life” answers the Discover Indie Film Four Questions!

“DREAM/life” which took home three awards at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2019, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Director, and the Filmmakers Awards for Outstanding Short Film and Outstanding Screenplay.

This interview kind of has to have two disclaimers.  The first is that we recorded this in February, 2020, a few weeks before a global pandemic hit.  There are not any timely references, but David mention future filmmaking plans that obviously got interrupted by COVID-19.  The second is that we spoke over Skype or FaceTime, I can’t remember which, and we had a little delay that often made it harder for us to not speak over each other.  My hope is that someday the world returns to normal and perhaps David will find himself in Los Angeles and we can talk about his next film in person!
