What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Remove the loud bells ringing toward the end of the book. It will wake the dead!

I tried to continue to listen to it for the 21 day duration, but the loud bells are too much to handle. Plus I don't like the sound of the ocean. It was just to loud and too busy to relax for me. It might work for others, but not for me.

I can think of this having had any good qualities. I didn't benefit from it at all.

Shallow but a few useful tips

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Its too basic, starting assuming no understanding of employee engagement etc. Some of it talks about HR 101 rather than coaching.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lyn Kelley?

Lyn is not the best narrator, and that's OK as I wouldn't expect authors be the best on vocals. Its quite a different profession. I would recommend Lyn arrange for someone with good narrating reviews (female) to do the narration. If Lyn you still wish to narrate, please just slow down and pause momentarily between ideas, paragraphs and when emphasising something. That alone will really enhance the interest of the reader and lead them more at crucial times.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from How to Become a Corporate/Business Coach?

Too much HR 101 and engagement stuff at the beginning. I was looking for more on the process of coaching, not environmental factors. The section on 7 ways to sabotage oneself was a really good chapter. I found it useful and made my $5 purchase worthwhile. If more of the book had similar deep and substantive process, this book would have been rated highly. Clearly Lyn can turn it on when she wants, so hopefully future books I will read of Lyn's will do this.

I'm amazed the only other reviewer of this book has given 5 stars not only to this, but to 5 other books of Lyn which constitutes 60% of all their reviews. Clearly my learning style is very different to this amazing reviewer.

I can't believe that in just a few hours I felt confident I could do Corporate and Business Coaching and Consulting!

The best part about the book was the chapter on "How to Get Your Foot In the Door." It gave me a step-by-step method of getting businesses to hire me.

I now know what corporations and businesses want and need in a coach/consultant and I feel ready to be of service.

This book was exactly what I needed to get started on my goal of business consulting. The author explains it in an easy-to-follow way, and is actually a great role model on how to coach people in business.

Advertisement masquerading as a book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This book is largely an advertisement for their seminars. There is little actual content in the book and almost nothing for a classroom teacher. The book is chapter after chapter of vignettes about how great the "all kind of minds" approach is. While claiming to reject jargon, it simply replaces it with its own undefined jargon. The book is poorly reasoned and poorly argued. While claiming to be base on science, it does not present the data necessary to support that claim. It also blends its scientifically base findings, with serious future speculation rooted in their own philosophical presuppositions. The whole thing is a lousy bate and switch.

Best professional development book I've read in a long time. I'm recommending it to all colleagues and have already done so with administration. Very readable, practical, and steeped in best-practices.

great read for teachers

I purchased this book, thinking I'd read it in August, to refresh my attitude before another school year began--but I read it the last few weeks of this school year. I'm glad I did. This book is an easy read, but gives a lot of information to "chew on". I plan to re-read it in August. It has helped me to renew my commitment to teaching, after being close to burning out after 35 years. HIGHLY recommended reading!

Great information for teachers, tutors, educational therapists

This is a terrific, easy to read, practical book that focuses on the process of teaching our students how to become deep thinkers and independent, reflective learners. Dr. Hopkins clearly explains why and how teachers need to move their students beyond memorization of facts to skills such as comparing, reasoning, generalizing, predicting, and questioning. Dr. Hopkins shares her own "up and down" journey as an educator through vignettes at the beginning of each chapter. The vignettes make the reader feel that they are having a personal conversation with the author and can learn from her struggles as well as her successes as an educator. No matter how long you've been teaching, this book will give you new ideas and make you think more critically about the goals you set for your students and yourself.

Not for teachers of young adults

This book disappointed me. I am looking for books that will help me with first-year college/university students. The focus in this book is on pre-teens, even though it does not say so in the promotional material. The book only had a couple theories that might be moderately useful with young adults. Also, since I see my students only once per week in 10-week quarters, none of the practical tips are useful. They are all designed for a teacher who interacts with students daily. The final reason I give this a two rather than a three star is that the tips are supported with Hopkins' opinion rather than backed by research or practice from dozens of teachers. The lack of critical analysis started to annoy me.
