    A good read.
Not as deep as Helmet For My Pillow or With The Old Breed, but still an interesting collection of stories about the experiences of a young Marine in WW2. The afterward section at the very end has a few odd moments though.
    You'll Be Sor-ee
A tipical story of the Korean War, but I would still recommend it to others.
Interesting recollection of an amazing Marine
Good book, well narated. Bit more light hearted than with the old breed or helmet for my pillow. Did not like the author's opinion on evolution at the end. Totally unrelated to subject of book. lost a star for it.

    Title: Finish Forty and Home
Subtitle: The Untold World War II Story of B-24s in the Pacific
    Author: Phil Scearce
    Narrator: Danny Campbell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-06-11
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 41 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
During the early years of World War II in the Pacific theatre, against overwhelming odds, young American airmen flew the longest and most perilous bombing missions of the war. They faced determined Japanese fighters without fighter escort, relentless anti-aircraft fire with no deviations from target, and thousands of miles of over-water flying with no alternative landing sites.
Finish Forty and Home, by Phil Scearce, is the true story of the men and missions of the 11th Bombardment Group as it fought alone and unheralded in the South Central Pacific, while America had its eyes on the war in Europe. The book opens with Sgt. Herman Scearce, the author's father, lying about his age to join the Army Air Corps at 16. The narrative follows Scearce through training and into combat with his new crewmates, including pilot Lt. Joe Deasy, whose last-minute transfer from training duty thrusts the new crew into the squadron commander's role. Inexperienced crews are pressed into combat with navigational training inadequate for the great distances flown over Pacific routes, and losses mount. Finish Forty and Home takes the listener into combat with B-24 Liberator bomber crews facing the perils of long missions against tiny Japanese-held island targets. After new crews assembled into a squadron on Hawaii, they are sent on a mission to bomb Nauru. Soon the squadron moves on to bomb Wake Island, Tarawa, and finally Iwo Jima. These missions bring American forces closer and closer to the Japanese home islands and precede the critical American invasions of Tarawa and Iwo Jima. The 42nd Squadron's losses through 1943 were staggering: 50 out of 110 airmen killed. Phil Scearce explores the context of the war and sets the stage for these daring missions, revealing the motivations of the men who flew them: to finish forty combat missions and make it home again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Finish Forty and Home is a treasure: poignant, thrilling, and illuminating." (Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit)

Compelling History of the Pacific Air War
What did you love best about Finish Forty and Home?
I loved the many human stories within the over-arching history of the Pacific Air War. My father was a left-waist gunner, radar bomber and flew with the 30th. He completed 40 missions in December of 1944, on the Bird of Paradise. I believe it was the same plane that crashed off Saipan in January 1945. I loved the detailed research and the obvious passion Phil Scearce had for this story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Herman Scearce was a wonderfully drawn character: complex, intelligent and mischievous. He's a guy I'd love to sit down and have a beer with.
    Which scene was your favorite?
There were many poignant moments in the book. I was very moved by the loss of some of Herman Scearce's original crew and the loss of the Bird of Paradise.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I didn't want to rush it. Danny Campbell is an excellent narrator. He brought an easy comfortable tone to the characters and the story.
    Any additional comments?
I'm indebted to the author for finally telling this story -- and telling it with respect and compassion.
    Pretty Good!
I enjoyed this book; it has historical importance; but it wasn't as well done as I would have liked.

Title: The Latter Days at Colditz

    Publisher's Summary:
In 'The Colditz Story', Pat Reid told the story of the escape academy that sprang up inside the most impregnable German POW camp of the Second World War, ending appropriately with his own incredible escape from Colditz. But Reids own break-out was by no means the last. In this enthralling sequel, he follows the fortunes of the escape academy right up until the arrival of the allied forces in April 1945. Here are the tales of fantastic bravery and stunning ingenuity every bit as mesmerising as the original.

    .....Die Gedanken Sind Frei.....
In this follow-up book to THE COLDITZ STORY Paul Reid goes beyond his personal involvement and relates many of the other fascinating escape attempts that took place in Colditz castle as WWII played out. This book is every bit as interesting and exciting as the first one.
Of great interest to me is the detailed account of the formidable project of constructing a glider as an escape vehicle in a prison especially chosen to discourage escape. I am a fan of the old made for 1971 TV movie The Escape of the Birdmen starring Doug MacClure (Alternate titles: Colditz: Escape of the Birdmen, The Birdmen, and Operation Braindrain Codename Chessboard.) That movie is set in Colditz and seems a lot like Hogans Heroes or Stalag 17. But even though the story is told in an engaging light-hearted fashion the true spirit is that they can imprison your body but they cant hold your mind captive. Well this book is much the same as that movie in that is is an inspiring fun account of the effort men will put out to get free.
Terrence Hardiman is a fine narrator, handling multiple character voices in expert fashion.
GRIPPING STORY read by FANTASTIC narrator!!
What did you love best about The Latter Days at Colditz?
Everything. The incredible true stories of the brave POW in Colditz and their unconquerable humor...and the narrators awesome ability to bring it all to life!
Who was your favorite character and why?
    all of them
    Odd for an Amrerican
The British author continues to use odd analogies that have no meaning or relevance to American life. This makes for difficulty understanding the emotional parts of the story. What could have been a great threaded story becomes a transcript of uninteresting events.
    A must read
As with the original book by Pat Reid, "The Colditz Story", this title tells the story of allied POWs in the latter years of World War 2, focusing rightly on the various attempts to escape by British, French, Polish and Danish POWs from Colditz Castle.
In my opinion, "The Colditz Story" and "The Latter Days at Colditz" comprise one of the most remarkable true stories ever told. It would be difficult to credit some of the escapades of the prisoners as reality, so bizarre and outlandish are they. But these books are masterpieces of suspense, adrenalin-pumping action, and factual data which would hold any would-be escaper in good stead today.
As a fan of the books, I was eager to see how well they translated to audiobook, and I was not disappointed. Terrence's reading is adroit, punctual and maintains the pace of the book extremely well.

    Publisher's Summary:
Colditz - the dreaded POW camp was supposed to be impregnable. It was the German fortress from which there was no escape. It had been escape-proof in the 1914-18 war and was to be again in the Second World War, according to the Germans... This is the true story that has passed into legend: the story of the incredible courage and daredevil ingenuity of those who refused to admit defeat - those who burrowed, leapt and ran their way to freedom. It is the story of the finest escapers of World War Two, culminating in the authors own dramatic escape in 1942.

One of the best in the genre
Author has a great sense of humor. The stories from Colditz are funny despite those killed and injured. This is serious and I appreciate the levity he brings to the story. The narrator is perfect, His reading and accent so add to the flavor of the story. Loved the Gestapo being outwhitted by the prisoners. Puts the lie to the myths about German efficiency.
    Enthralling and exciting
Would you listen to The Colditz Story again? Why?
Yes, I would definitely listen to it again.
I read the book when I was a teenager and was just as enthralled as I was listening to the audio version.
This is a story about the human spirit under pressure and what is possible in a seemingly impossible situation.
There are lessons here for those of us who have never experienced war or oppression. No matter how hard we may think our lives are it is nothing compared to others around the world imprisoned or detained against their will.
Yet even under the worst of circumstances incredible feats can be achieved.
Reading the true stories of escapes from Colditz - the most impregnable and escape proof prisoner of war camp in World War II, Germany - is both nail biting and mind blowing.
The Colditz Story covers many seemingly impossible achievements - lock picking "unlockable" doors, building tunnels, hidden trapdoors, forging documents, making german uniforms from scraps around the POW camp and more.
The story is full of humour, surprise, tension and astonishment along with some sad sections when things don't go well.
When I hear about prisoners esaping from prison on the news I always think about this book. When someone has nothing to do but think about escaping 24 hours a day it is incredible what crazy, hair-brained and absolutely genius methods are dreamed up.
Overall it's an amazing story that in many ways reads like fiction and yet is 100% true.
    I highly recommend it.
    absolutly brilliant
Incredible, it was like i was there in the castle itself. a real adrenaline rush with the escapes and also very informative on so many other escape strategies. A true game of cat and mouse. I loved it
    Great Story! Love it!
I like the way the author opened up a whole new level of history to me. I've read a lot about WWII, but this just adds the finishing touch. I think I can say I am now addicted to POW and escape stories.
    Awesome narration
Very interesting story told with one of the best narrator ever. I definitely recommend this book to everyone. You won't regret it

    Publisher's Summary:
On rare occasions in American history, Congress enacts a measure so astute, so far-reaching, so revolutionary, it enters the language as a metaphor. The Marshall Plan comes to mind, as does the Civil Rights Act. But perhaps none resonates in the American imagination like the G.I. Bill.
In a brilliant addition to Oxford's acclaimed Pivotal Moments in American History series, historians Glenn C. Altschuler and Stuart M. Blumin offer a compelling and often surprising account of the G.I. Bill and its sweeping and decisive impact on American life. Formally known as the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944, it was far from an obvious, straightforward piece of legislation, but resulted from tense political maneuvering and complex negotiations. As Altschuler and Blumin show, an unlikely coalition emerged to shape and pass the bill, bringing together both New Deal Democrats and conservatives who had vehemently opposed Roosevelt's social-welfare agenda. For the first time in American history returning soldiers were not only supported, but enabled to pursue success--a revolution in America's policy towards its veterans. Once enacted, the G.I. Bill had far-reaching consequences. By providing job training, unemployment compensation, housing loans, and tuition assistance, it allowed millions of Americans to fulfill long-held dreams of social mobility, reshaping the national landscape. The huge influx of veterans and federal money transformed the modern university and the surge in single home ownership vastly expanded America's suburbs. Perhaps most important, as Peter Drucker noted, the G.I. Bill "signaled the shift to the knowledge society." The authors highlight unusual or unexpected features of the law--its color blindness, the frankly sexist thinking behind it, and its consequent influence on race and gender relations.
The Pivotal Moments in American History series seeks to unite the old and the new history, combining the insights and techniques of recent historiography with the power of traditional narrative. Each title has a strong narrative arc with drama, irony, suspense, and most importantly great characters who embody the human dimension of historical events. The general editors of Pivotal Moments are not just historians; they are popular writers themselves, and, in two cases, Pulitzer Prize winners: David Hackett Fischer, James M. McPherson, and David Greenberg. We hope you like your American History served up with verve, wit, and an eye for the telling detail!

    Title: Escaping the Trap

    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
After its successful landing at Inchon and capture of Seoul in September 1950, the U.S. X Corps was joined by Eighth Army, and many people expected the two commands to be combined into one. Instead, General MacArthur ordered the X Corps to load onto ships and travel around the peninsula to northeastern Korea and the port city of Wonsan, which the South Korean I Corps had captured. Major elements of X Corps were to move west from their positions in northeast Korea and cut the supply lines of Chinese troops expected to cross the Yalu and confront Eighth Army. Other parts of X Corps would push north toward the border and thus control all of Korea. Neither goal was met. Escaping the Trap tells what happened when X Corps discovered that the Chinese had crossed the Yalu unseen and marched rapidly to Chosin Reservoir, where they landed a surprise attack against the 1st Marine Division and the army's 31st Regimental Combat Team of the 7th Infantry Division. The Chinese attack in late November 1950 virtually annihilated the 31st RCT east of Chosin, while the 1st Marine Division made an escape through treacherous terrain and a forty-mile roadblock, pushing on to the coast and the monumental evacuation of X Corps from North Korea. Roy E. Appleman's study of the day-to-day records of X Corps and of published material and his interviews and correspondence with survivors make the whole story of this portion of the Korean War available for the first time.

    Excellent!!!!!!
I have been study the Korean War for a few years now and I have found myself always going back to the Marine Chosin Campaign. Although I prefer actual "Memoir" books than "College" type books, Roy Applemans' books are usually some of the best. "Escaping the Trap" is just as good if not better than some of the "Memoir" books. It is a tough read straight through and since I have been studying the Chosin Campaign, this book is great to skip around the different chapters. There is very FEW information out there about the Army's part in the East of Chosin due to the fact that the Army is very embarrased by the events of Chosin. Any one that wants to learn more about Chosin, I will gladly send them to any of Applemans' books as well as the other books that I have read. The best by far is "Breakout" by Martin Russ. "Last Stand of Fox Company" by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin. "Colder Than Hell" by Joseph Owen and a lot of other books out there.
But I do not blame the Heroes of the X Corps who fought to survive and did what they had to do with given what they had from their Command. If MacArthur's ego did not get in the way of ALL of the intelligence that came through about the CCF waiting for them, than the events of 25 November to 10 December would not have happened. Being a former Marine and currently in the Army, I am very proud of those that fought to allow me to serve and it is a shame that Korea is indeed the "Forgotten" War by many. But not by me and I want to send out a BIG "THANK YOU" to the Korean Veterans if any should read this. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN BY ME!!!
An Incredible Story of American Marines and Soldiers in North Korea, 1950
North Korea has been called the "forgotten war''.

A unique analysis of the moral weight of warfare today through the lenses of philosophy and psychology. Philosopher, ethicist, and psychoanalyst Nancy Sherman explores the psychological and moral burdens borne by soldiers. By illuminating the extent to which wars are fought internally as well as externally, this book expands the national discussion about war and the men and women who fight our nations' battles. With close-up looks at servicemen and women preparing for, experiencing, and returning home from war, Sherman probes the psyche of today's soldiers examining how they learn to kill and to leave the killing behind. Bringing to light the moral quandaries soldiers face: torture, the thin line between fighters and civilians, and the anguish of killing even in a just war.
Sherman bares the souls of our soldiers and the emotional landscape of soldiering. At the heart of the book are interviews with soldiers, from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also from Vietnam and World Wars I and II.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-11-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
A respected scholar of military history and an expert on strategy, Martin van Creveld recently explored the modern worlds shifting method of combat in The Changing Face of War. Now, in The Culture of War, he argues that there is much more to war than just soldiers killing one another for whatever reason. War has always been a topic of deep intrigue. Fighting itself can be a source of great, perhaps even the greatest, joy; out of this joy and fascination an entire culture has grown - from the war paint of tribal warriors to todays "tiger suits," from Julius Caesar's red cloak to Douglas MacArthur's pipe, from the decorative shields of ancient Greece to modern aircraft nose art, and from the invention of chess around A.D. 600 to cyber era combat simulators. The culture of war has had its own traditions, laws, rituals, music, art, literature, and monuments since the beginning of civilization. Through the ages, the culture of war has usually been highly esteemed. Not so in today's advanced countries, which tend either to mock it ("Military intelligence is to intelligence what military music is to music") or to denounce it as "militaristic." This provocative book, the first of its kind, sets out to show how wrongheaded, and even dangerous, such attitudes are. The Culture of War argues that men and women today, contrary to the hopes of some, are just as fascinated by war as they have been in the past. A military that has lost touch with the culture of war is doomed not merely to defeat but to disintegration. Innovative, authoritative, and riveting, The Culture of War is a major work by one of the world's greatest and most insightful military historians.
    Critic Reviews:
"In a tour de force of scholarship and insight, [van Creveld] takes [listeners] through the processes of preparing for, waging and commemorating war." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Men like war
This book has a straight-forward and historically supportable thesis: men like war. They enjoy the whole show: the uniforms, the marching, the music, the killing, the games. Martin van Creveld does a fine job exploring many of these areas, often surprising the reader with some fascinating historical detail. He moves around the world seeking evidence, and is often very convincing, except for his strange apologia for the Serbs in the 1990show odd that the words ethnic cleansing do not appear in that discussion. But van Creveld tilts at a straw woman: feminists. He is convinced that women, who apparently desire to enter the military in great numbers pose a danger not just to the culture of war but to national security itself. Women must remain content with their traditional relation to the military as cheerleaders, breeders of soldiers, and prizes; they will utterly destroy the ability of any country to defend itself if allowed to serve. He is like a boy insisting that no girls are allowed in the tree-fort. I am not making it up; so important is it to van Creveld that women be kept out of the military, that he devotes the last chapter of his book to what he sees as the greatest threat to military preparedness: women. It is little wonder that women continue to show little interest in such a hostile field as military history.

    More a personal reflection
I bought this book because I am am going on a 70th Anniversary Band of Brothers tour. I saw the series and have a good knowledge of WWII history. This book takes the listener to the micro level. The problem is that it becomes too personal about the author's own experiences visiting the places where Easy company fought.. He does a good job of describing what the men felt and did. But he gets hung up on telling us how reality differs from the TV series. He is traveling with one of the survivors of Easy company: Forest Gootz. Alexander treats Gootz and the definitive expert on what really happened. While I'm sure they had an enjoyable trip together, I found it repetitive hearing about where they stayed, what they ate and Gootz' smoking cigars. In short, I think the writing could have been more crisp, focused and less subjective. As for my trip, I'm not sure that I have any greater insights as to how the battlefields differ today than they did 70 years ago. I took it for granted that some of the places would be developed and no longer appear as they did in 1944 to 1945.
    A story of heroes.
What made the experience of listening to In the Footsteps of the Band of Brothers the most enjoyable?
Hearing the thoughts and experiences of men who were willing to give their all for freedom
Who was your favorite character and why?
All of them. They are true heroes.
Have you listened to any of Norman Dietzs other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Pride in our veterans.

A novel could never do justice or top the true stories of World War II, especially since true stories of heroism abound. But this is far from a dry run of the facts. This is my favorite audio book. The author and the narrator are both excellent. Suspenseful. The best of the triumph over tragedy adrenaline pumping war stories of the bunch. Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry
    Junior Officer Takes the Con
Sometimes the answer to the most difficult problem is the most obvious. Why were the Japanese ASW ships always on top of the Billfish. They had to know they were there, but how. Don Keith's excellently written and spoken book brings to life a most harrowing story of survival, courage, stamina, and commitment. This crew was not going to loose the boat. Lessons learned here can be applied today. Highly enjoyable and highly recommended.
A Want to be Novel but a Novella at Heart
One third sheer excitement, two thirds padding so it did not have to be listed as a Novella. If you do get it do not give up on it before the middle where all the action takes place.
