But it is 1936 and America and in the midst of the depression the East's best young men have moved away seeking work so an old adversary, Pittsburgh mobster Edgar McFaul, has a job for him.
A lowly errand runner has stolen some money and fled to the West, the region where Mckibbon's violent career had started many decades before. A career that has bridged from the banditry of the old West to the violent mob wars of the Jazz age. McKibbon unpacks his pearl handled revolvers once more and leaves the East heading West to the land of his youth.
He corners his quarry in an almost deserted Nevada town where the construction of the Tri State Railroad line had faltered many years before. McKibbon is shocked to discover that the fugitive, Paul, has dragged his young son, Ryan, along in his misadventures.
Holed up in the towns only Hotel, the fugitives have tried to make a life of sorts for themselves among the rest of the discarded people who have made their way to Cahill, Nevada. A ruthless band of mercenaries has arrived, intent on gaining the bounty for Paul's death and for the retrieval of the stolen money. Tired and no longer confident in his abilities, Mckibbon's first instinct is to move on as he often has in the past, but some caring part inside has been triggered by the boy's plight.

In the summer of 2016, retired broadcaster Paul Ashton made an astounding discovery at a car boot sale in Sussex. He found a copy of Sherlock Holmes's Practical Handbook of Bee Culture, and bought it for 2. No other copy of this legendary volume - the only book Holmes wrote - has ever come to light.
The Handbook is the journal kept by Holmes from 1904 to 1912. 1904 was the year he retired from active investigation and moved to a farmhouse in East Dean. In 1912 he came out of retirement and left East Dean in order to outwit the German spy network in Britain on the eve of World War I.
The journal is, of course, principally the record of his bee-keeping activities, but Holmes has also included a wealth of astonishing information - some of it highly indiscreet - about the following:
Both the owner of the Handbook and the publisher are honored to be able to make this unique treasure available to the general public.

As Jean and Harry investigate Phyllis's east end haunts, Jean relishes the opportunity to play detective. After splitting off from her brother, she encounters Charlie, a man of dubious character, in an east end cafe. She believes Charlie is hiding information about Phyllis and ingratiates herself with him, but after an accident, she finds herself beginning to develop feelings that might cloud her judgment.
Meanwhile, Harry's search through the smog leads to an old acquaintance: a young man of sexually ambiguous nature. Harry might be more responsible for Phyllis's disappearance than he would like to admit. But his search is interrupted by a group of toughs who are also looking for Phyllis and who are surprised to hear that Phyllis is married, and that Harry is her husband.
Having uncovered the disturbing truth, Jean takes control of her own life - and everyone else's - by setting in motion a dangerous plan to save Phyllis and her unborn child. With its alternating perspectives and dark undercurrents, The Smog is a thrilling mystery from debut novelist Timothy Allsop.

    Critic Reviews:
"When read as a lightly fictionalized history, in the tradition of Bruce Duffy's novels and Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song, this hybrid beast of a book proves successful in bringing the past alive and weaving a sinister bedtime story for readers." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Recensioni critiche:
