Publisher's Summary:
An eye-opening view of the unprecedented global spread of El Sistema - intensive music education that disrupts the cycles of poverty.
In some of the bleakest corners of the world, an unprecedented movement is taking root. From the favelas of Brazil to the Maori villages in New Zealand, from occupied Palestine to South Central Los Angeles, musicians with strong social consciences are founding intensive orchestra programs for children in need.
In this captivating and inspiring account, authors Tricia Tunstall and Eric Booth tell the remarkable story of the international El Sistema movement. A program that started over four decades ago with a handful of music students in a parking garage in Caracas, El Sistema has evolved into one of classical music's most vibrant new expressions, and one of the world's most promising social initiatives. Now with more than 700,000 students in Venezuela, El Sistema's central message - that music can be a powerful tool for social change - has burst borders to grow in 64 countries across the globe.
Critic Reviews:
"A remarkable narrative with broad appeal to everyone from sociologists to general readers, this is one of the best recent books promoting social change." (Library Journal)

Empowering the world's children through music
If you need an infusion of hope in these challenging times, let Eric Booth and Tricia Tunstall show you children around the world experiencing the power of music. This book examines the lifeline that El Sistema music programs provide to kids in the midst of poverty, war, drugs, and all kinds of strife, and tells the stories of how theses students find inspiration to traverse all these struggles through the inherent beauty of music and the super-charge of getting to connect with others through that beauty. By the time you get to the end, you'll want to know how you can help - and there is a thorough collection of resources to help you get involved, or to help you network with other organizations out there who are changing the world. A truly excellent, well-researched and invigorating read!
An inspiring, must-read book!
I first heard of El Sistema several years ago when Gustavo Dudamel was on the rise. Little did I know how amazing this program is and how it has spread all over the world. I was so inspired by this book, "Playing for Their Lives." It reveals how music and ensemble playing can really elevate the human condition, not by creating more performing artists in the world, but by offering hope, value, a sense of community and belonging to the children and their families who are left out of society. Thank you, Eric Booth and Tricia Tunstall, for articulating so vividly how passionate individuals can come together to make the world a better place. Count me in!
IF IT CAN HAPPEN THERE, WHY NOT HERE?
I'd wondered how the Venezuelan Sistema Orchestra could afford to travel to New York City given the country's dire financial straits. Obviously, Dudamel is a big drawing card, but I had no idea of the international scope El Sistema had grown to. One can only ask red-faced and embarrassed by the U.S. doesn't have such a compelling force for music as opposed to piecemeal and scattered programs (many of them good, admittedly).
