    Title: All Fishermen Are Liars
    Author: John Gierach
    Narrator: Mike Chamberlain
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-07-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 32 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
For John Gierach, "the master of fly-fishing" (Sacramento Bee), fishing is always the answer - even when it's not clear what the question is.
In All Fishermen Are Liars, Gierach travels around North America seeking out quintessential fishing experiences, whether it's at a busy stream or a secluded lake hidden amid snow-capped mountains. He talks about the art of fly-tying and the quest for the perfect steelhead fly ("The Nuclear Option"), about fishing in the Presidential Pools previously fished by the elder George Bush ("I wondered briefly if I'd done something karmically disastrous and was now fated to spend the rest of my life breathing the exhaust of this elderly Republican"), and the importance of traveling with like-minded companions when caught in a soaking rain ("At this point someone is required to say, 'You know, there are people who wouldn't think this is fun'"). And though Gierach loses some fish along the way, he never loses his passion and sense of humor. Wry, contemplative, and lively - that is to say, pure Gierach - All Fishermen Are Liars is a joy to listen to-and, as always, the next best thing to fishing itself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Perceptive and witty...These lyrical essays explode with descriptions of beautiful places, big fish, and beautiful fish." (

Good book, cant stand the reader
Very good stories, well written. Very entertaining. Unfortunately the reader sounds like he is reading an instruction book. His tone fluctuations and pauses are so repetitive it was extremely distracting...
    Well Written
The book was very well written. My first experience with a Gierach book. Will definitely be listening to more. The narrator was good, but several mis-pronounced words were distracting.
    Poor narration; author deserves better
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Get a different narrator. Gierach is in the pantheon of fly-fishing authors and he deserves much better.
What didnt you like about Mike Chamberlains performance?
Chamberlain isn't a fly fisherman; in fact, I doubt if he has ever fished. No one would ever pronounce "lead" in the context used by any fisherman, as "leed." And his inflection and word emphasis is 'way off for this type of narration. He's clearly out of his element. His narration is so grating that it detracts from Gierach's laid-back writing style.
    Living the dream
well read, good stories definitely worth a second listen. If you like fishing expecially fly fishing you will enjoy this book. Going to listen to more of his books.
    For Fly Fishermen
Not enough enjoyable anecdotes, too much technical jargon about flyfishing and flyfishing equipment. It will be most enjoyable for experienced fly fisherman.

    Narrator: Calvin Robinson

    Release date: 01-31-17
    Publisher: Oasis Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 24 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
"Justice is something every generation has to strive for."
A trailblazer in the civil rights movement, John M. Perkins led voter registration efforts in 1964, worked for school desegregation in 1967, and was jailed and tortured in 1970. He is no less zealous today as he sees a new generation of freedom fighters battling the same issues and the same systems he has spent his life working to correct.
Through his raw, personal stories spanning from the civil rights era to today, Perkins shows us that, though the fight is not over, there are many reasons to hope and to carry on the good work he and his contemporaries began more than a generation ago. He calls us to work for justice by living out God's redemptive love in all of our relationships.
"It all comes down to love," he says. "Love will always be our final fight."

Must read for anyone concerned about Civil Rights
Dream with Me: Race, Love, and the Struggle We Must Win is a 'Must Read' for anyone concerned about Civil Rights in the present.
This John M. Perkins book reverberates with the echoes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a manner that is not often heard these days. As a contemporary of Dr. King, Perkins is a valid, credible source for direction toward many current social issues.
    AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY
    Excellent
John does a wonderful job combining the scriptures with life experience to shine light on the gospel story and its integral role in overcoming racism and prejudice.
John Perkins, as usual, sees clearly and inspires!
John Perkins tells his own story as a part of God's larger story. It's an inspiring review of a life committed to listening and following God, whether through tribulation, tragedy, or triumph. It's a prophetic call to Christians and churches to be the people of God that reflect His ways and glory. One people, under God!
    Thoughts from a Christian elder
Summary: Thoughts from an elder as he reflects on his life, the church and the world.
I have read just about everything that John Perkins has written. So I pre-ordered Dream with Me months ago on kindle and picked up the audiobook as well. I have followed John Perkins work since I first became aware of the Christian Community Development Association in 1991 and attended their annual meeting in 1992.
Since then I have attended two or three additional annual meetings and read widely books that have been written by others associated with CCDA. I wrote my Masters thesis for my Masters in Social Service Administration on the different ways that Christian Churches and their church based non-profit arms related to one another using three Chicago based CCDA member organizations as examples.
If you do not know the name John Perkins or anything about CCDA, this probably isnt the first book I would recommend. I would suggest starting with Perkins earlier memoir Let Justice Roll Down or Stephen Berks now out of print biography on Perkins, A Time to Heal, both give a much larger context to Perkins work and thoughts and would help you to understand why we should listen to Perkins in the first place.
Honestly, I thought Dream With Me would be more autobiography than it is.

Length: 8 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-27-16
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 21 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Raised as an atheist, Sara Miles lived an enthusiastically secular life as a restaurant cook and a writer. Then early one winter morning, for no earthly reason, she wandered into a church. "I was certainly not interested in becoming a Christian," she writes, "or, as I thought of it rather less politely, a religious nut." But she ate a piece of bread, took a sip of wine, and found herself radically transformed.
A lesbian left-wing journalist who covered revolutions around the world, Miles was not the woman her friends expected to see suddenly praising Jesus. She was certainly not the kind of person the government had in mind to run a "faith-based charity". Religion for her was not about angels or good behavior or piety; it was about real hunger, real food, and real bodies. Before long, she turned the bread she ate at communion into tons of groceries, piled on the church's altar to be given away. The first food pantry she established provided hundreds of poor, elderly, sick, deranged, and marginalized people with lifesaving food and a sense of belonging. Within a few years, the loaves had multiplied, and she and the people she served had started nearly a dozen more pantries.
    Critic Reviews:
"Engaging, funny, and highly entertaining." (Booklist)

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The John Scott story is the ultimate underdog narrative in sports during 2016 when Scott - in the twilight of his career - went from a joke All-Star fan-voted nominee to scoring two goals and winning the All-Star Game's MVP title. This is his heartwarming story about an average Joe who became a sports superhero overnight.
Known as a willing-and-able fighter and bruiser in the league, John Scott was a surprising and tongue-and-cheek nominee for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. He'd been in the league for over eight NHL seasons, playing for teams such as the Wild, Blackhawks, Rangers, Sabres, and the Sharks. Scott's best attribute as an NHL player was dropping his gloves - never the best player, the 260 pounder did become the most feared fighter in the NHL, racking up extensive penalty minutes. In order to prevent him from playing in the game, his current team - the Phoenix Coyotes - traded Scott to the Montreal Canadians, who demoted him to the AHL team in an attempt to disqualify him from playing in the All-Star Game. Fans were outraged and Scott was devastated. He'd been downgraded in his job - forced to relocate while his wife was pregnant with twin girls. But the fans wouldn't back down and insisted the NHL let Scott play in the game. The league relented, and Scott not only was invited to attend the NHL game in Nashville, but was nominated a team captain. The media and sports fans at large fell in love with the giant six-foot-eight player who by all means, was just a normal guy and no superstar player. In a true Cinderella story, Scott scored two goals and was the All-Star Game's MVP. This is his personal memoir - detailing his life growing up and how he was able to keep his sense of humor and become the ultimate Cinderella-Story of hockey.

Great story, not a great reader
As a hockey fan, I was really pleased to get to listen to John Scott's great story in his own words. But the performance leaves one wanting. Kirby's diction is so precise that he sounds robotic and stilted, and he mispronounces many, many names, which is distracting and irritating. He should have made a point to get informed before his performance.
    good book, not good reading
reader didn't know the hockey guys names, which for a hockey book would help. great story of how underdogs can make a dream come true
    awesome story!
I'm pretty sure the guy reading is the same guy that lives in my GPS
If he only sounded like John
    Any additional comments?
A light read that was quite interesting with self-deprecating humour throughout. Unfortunately, narration had a lot to be desired. Hearing Kirby's voice speak John Scott's words was off putting with mispronounced words throughout. I'm sure Kirby is a fine narrator, but I just wish they had looked to find a narrator more suited to this autobiography.
    Pronunciations
The reader could have looked up how to pronounce last names of the players. Kept throwing me off.

Preferred the author to read the story
I was not a fan of the narrator. It would have been a lot better for the author of the book to read the story.
    Loved it
I loved this audio book. Kailyn is by far the strongest girl from teen mom and my favorite. I hope the best for you and your family
I wish I had purchased a hard back
Kailyn is a woman with character, drive and for the most part ethics. Now with a BA under her belt, perhaps the drive to stay on the road will disappear. She is the one girl of this new genre that I would like to meet. The narrator nearly drove me nuts with that high pitched, teenage cross between a cheerleader rant and melodrama. The dissonance between kailyns words and spoken was so diverse, I wasted a lot of money. Good news is, won't do it again.
    FAB!!!
Love this book you get to know the real person finished it in one day would recommend
    What a woman
Could not put this down, I have lived a similar life to Kailyn Lowry, awesome, frank and honest book well done to you.

Length: 9 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 111 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Rick Greenberg joined the Corps right out of high school because he always wanted to be a Marine. Little did he know what it would ultimately cost him to even approach earning such a title.
After boot camp, "Greeny", as he was later known by his Recon team buddies, attended radio communication school in San Diego, California.
As a radio operator, upon arrival in Vietnam, Greenberg was both surprised and troubled when he was arbitrarily assigned to the First Recon Battalion, generally considered to be an elite unit, and normally manned by volunteers. He soon learns he must adapt quickly, or risk going home in a body bag!
The battle scenes Greenberg masterfully draws in Silent Heroes are both realistic and gripping. They can easily send cold chills down the spines of combat veterans, and dispel any false notions or glorified myths held by non-combatants.

    Thrown into the fire
Rick Greenberg was trained as a radio transmitter operator. The Marine Core Force Reconnaissance needed radio transmitter operators just then. He got placed with a Marine Recon section that performed deep reconnaissance and direct action operations. His first mission was action-packed, and I loved the narrators performance.
There was a tension and lots of suspense as I binged listening to find out how Greenberg was going to survive deep reconnaissance in Vietnam. The narrator was well cast for this performance, as his articulate voice didnt sound like somebody who entered the Marines as a tough guy.
This was my first book written from the perspective of a radio transmitter operator in this war. That separately and alone would have made it a worthwhile experience for me. I felt there were bonuses in listening to Silent Heroes. The action was vividly described and I loved the book.
Walked the same ground, carried the same radio
What did you love best about Silent Heroes?
True experience and timeline. Walked the same dirt, hills and same area of operations a year earlier than the author.
What did you like best about this story?
The grunt level history of the experience. Step by dreadful step. I could hear the claymores in my head, whip of the bullets that missed. Smell the stench of the paddies and jungles.
Which character as performed by Patrick Lawlor was your favorite?
    Green himself
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Recon, Over!
    Any additional comments?
Great story! Semper Fi 2531 68-71
Great read its a must in this genre
what a fantastic read the writer did a great job going through his recollection of the war and his experiences. The narrator was fantastic this is a great read and if you're interested in the war genre or the Vietnam War you should definitely read this book.
    outstanding book
my father was marine in vietnam. I did a 20 year career in military this book is outstanding.
    Must Read!
One of the best books I have ever read! You can feel the jungle under your boots, the smell of primers in the air, and the unparalleled fear at every turn. Greenberg shares this tale of rear American hero's. If you don't have an appreciation for Force Recon, you will by the end of this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Lisa Anselmo wraps her entire life around her mother, a strong woman who is a defining force in Lisa's life - maybe too defining. When her mother dies from breast cancer, Lisa realizes she hasn't built a life of her own and struggles to find her purpose. Who is she without her mother - and her mother's expectations?
Desperate for answers, she turns to her favorite city - Paris - and impulsively buys a small apartment, refusing to play it safe for the first time. What starts out as an act of survival sets Lisa on a course that reshapes her life in ways she never could have imagined. Suddenly she's living like a local in a city she thought she knew, but her high school French, while fine for buying bread at the corner boulangerie, goes only so far when Paris gives her a strong dose of real life. From dating to homeownership in a foreign country, Lisa quickly learns it's not all picnics on the Seine and starts to doubt herself - and her love of the city. But she came to Paris to be happy, and she can't give up now. Isn't happiness worth fighting for?
In the vein of Eat, Pray, Love and Wild, My (Part-time) Paris Life is a story for anyone who's ever felt lost or hopeless but still dreams of something more. This candid memoir explores one woman's search for peace and meaning and how the ups and downs of expat life in Paris taught her to let go of fear, find self-worth, and create real, lasting happiness in the City of Light.

    Fun read!
I very much enjoyed this memoir. Fantastic performance by the author. I look forward to Part 2
Way better than I needed it to be. Loved it! Get it.
I love books about Paris and am a sucker for most of them. I've read mostly all of them that you were likely ever to find on bookshelves and on audible over the last 10 years. This book is more than you expect it to be. It will pull at anyone's heart strings. I live in NYC and have been to Paris over 20 times and I think she nails it. You feel her struggle, understand her perspective and feel like you have a seat at the cafe. Get it.
    Very touching story
The book I listened to was not the book I thought it was going to be.
I knew Lisa was on International House Hunters and that's why I bought this book.
I thought she would talk about how that came about and what it was like to shoot the show..
She did none of those things.
Instead she wrote a honest story of grief, anxiety and how she got through it.
This book touched in a way I never imagined.
I'm a lover of Paris and it warmed my heart to know that it helped her through some of her toughest days.

    Title: Hillbilly Elegy
Subtitle: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis

    Release date: 09-22-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 104 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From a former marine and Yale graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broad, probing look at the struggles of America's white working class.
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.
The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love" and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hope of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility.
But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that this is only the short, superficial version. Vance's grandparents, his aunt, his uncle, his sister, and most of all his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life and were never able to fully escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. Vance piercingly shows how he himself still carries around the demons of their chaotic family history.
A deeply moving memoir with its share of humour and vividly colourful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of the country.
    Critic Reviews:
"The memoir gripping America.... Vividly articulates the despair and disillusionment of blue-collar America." (Sunday Times)
"Vance's description of the culture he grew up in is essential reading for this moment in history." (David Brooks, New York Times)
"A beautiful memoir but it is equally a work of cultural criticism about white working-class America.... [Vance] offers a compelling explanation for why it's so hard for someone who grew up the way he did to make it...a riveting book." (Wall Street Journal)
"Quietly thoughtful, poignant...while the political timeliness of Hillbilly Elegy is undeniable, Vance truly shines when he takes us with him 'down the holler' into an America we thought we knew - until we realized how little of it we truly understood." (Huffington Post)
"Looking back on his youth, and all he fled, yields a frank, unsentimental, harrowing memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. It's a superb book given an extra layer of importance by its political reverberations: When Vance returns home these days, he sees yard after yard festooned with Trump signs." (NY Post)
"You will not read a more important book about America this year." (Economist)

    Publisher's Summary:
The author of the New York Times best seller Broken Open returns with a visceral and profound memoir of two sisters who, in the face of a bone marrow transplant - one the donor and one the recipient - begin a quest for acceptance, authenticity, and, most of all, love.
A mesmerizing and courageous memoir: the story of two sisters uncovering the depth of their love through the life-and-death experience of a bone marrow transplant.
Throughout her life Elizabeth Lesser has sought understanding about what it means to be true to yourself and, at the same time, truly connected to the ones you love. But when her sister, Maggie, needs a bone marrow transplant to save her life, and Lesser learns that she is the perfect match, she faces a far more immediate and complex question about what it really means to love - honestly, generously, and authentically.
Hoping to give Maggie the best chance possible for a successful transplant, the sisters dig deep into the marrow of their relationship to clear a path to unconditional acceptance. They leave the bone marrow transplant up to the doctors but take on what Lesser calls a "soul marrow transplant", examining their family history, having difficult conversations, examining old assumptions, and offering forgiveness until all that is left is love for each other's true selves. Their process - before, during, and after the transplant - encourages them to take risks of authenticity in other aspects their lives.
But life does not follow the storylines we plan for it. Maggie's body is ultimately too weak to fight the relentless illness. As she and Lesser prepare for the inevitable, they grow ever closer, and their shared blood cells become a symbol of the enduring bond they share.
Told with suspense and humor, Marrow is joyous and heartbreaking, incandescent and profound. The story reveals how even our most difficult experiences can offer unexpected spiritual growth. Reflecting on the multifaceted nature of love - love of other, love of self, love of the world - Marrow is an unflinching and beautiful memoir about getting to the very centers of ourselves.

My brother in law died from lymphoma mid way through my reading of this book. A 2-month diagnosis. He was 44 and lived 2 months and 1 day. This book helped lots. Thank you E. Lesser
    Beautiful book
Elizabeth lesser is a beautiful writer. I enjoyed this book so much. Her writing was honest and I was able to feel her pain and love. And the reading by Sally Field was perfect. She read it unbelievably well. I am so thankful as she was able to give Elizabeth's words the justice it deserved. Powerful, gentle, loving story. Thank you.

The eldest was a razor-sharp novelist of upper-class manners; the second was loved by John Betjeman; the third was a fascist who married Oswald Mosley; the fourth idolized Hitler and shot herself in the head when Britain declared war on Germany; the fifth was a member of the American Communist Party; the sixth became Duchess of Devonshire.
They were the Mitford sisters: Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica, and Deborah. Born into country-house privilege in the early years of the 20th century, they became prominent as "bright young things" in the high society of interwar London. Then, as the shadows crept over 1930s Europe, the stark - and very public - differences in their outlooks came to symbolize the political polarities of a dangerous decade.
The intertwined stories of their stylish and scandalous lives - recounted in masterly fashion by Laura Thompson - hold up a revelatory mirror to upper-class English life before and after WWII.
The Six was previously published as Take Six Girls.

    Don't waste your time.
What would have made The Six better?
It was a badly organized book. I have read about the Mitfords extensively and this is by far the worst account of their lives.
Would you ever listen to anything by Laura Thompson again?
I had no objection to the narrator.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    Yes.
What character would you cut from The Six?
    It's nonfiction - you can't cut anyone.
    Any additional comments?
I was so disappointed in this book. I listened to the end, but it was so badly done that it did nothing for me except make me mad that I had wasted time and a credit on it.
    Astonishing Narrator
I've always been interested in the Mitford story and quite enjoyed this book. The narrator, Maggie Mash, is absolutely fantastic and really made this book listenable. She is wonderful at conveying the distinct language and infle
    what a family
you don't know whether to like them or not but you always find them interesting. initially the "story" was hard to follow but once you got the names straight it was smooth sailing.
    Too hard to follow
I love biographies, especially about interesting women. However, this book is way too hard to follow. It jumps from one sister to another, back and forth in time, also referencing the characters and places in the books written by Nancy Mitford. So, the entire thing is thoroughly confusing. And boring to boot. I got through the third chapter and couldn't take it anymore. And the narrator's priggish sounding voice only added to the annoyance.
    The True Story
The Mitford family has (in recent decades) fascinated those inclined to the mix of controversy, whimsy and Old English Aristocracy. But it's never been easy to know them in truth. They've had a way of writing and speaking what they want the public to think. This well researched book cuts through it all, and we enjoy and marvel at all the complexities of six very difference competing girls through to womanhood. A very interesting family, fun and furious at the same time.
