Cannot believe this is a human narrator. Halting, unnatural intonation -- cannot tell what is being communicated because the pauses and flow are DESTROYED by the narrator. Makes this very hard to understand, even with a lot of focus.

Unfortunately, I have yet to make it through the first chapter or two. This topic is extremely interesting to me, but I found the narrator speaking with such an odd, distracting cadence at times, and in such a dry voice (think Ben Stein in a Clear Eyes commercial, but even less entertaining and conversational) that I haven't been able to get far in this book. I'm really bummed since I do so want to learn more about this topic! I will keep trying, but for now, my rating is pretty low here....

A good book to change how you think

The Primes is a great book to read through and take the time to evaluate how you think about a problem, individually or in a group, and make changes. I found the primes presented in the book extremely relevant to countless situations in life that without reading The Primes you easily fail to notice. Overall, this book is really help in changing how you approach problems and just generally how you think about yourself and the world around. I would recommend anyone about to enter the work force or already working to take the time to read the book and apply the primes.

The "Primes" shares pearls of wisdom in form of patterns, to create an "alphabet soup" for transformational work, no matter the arena you are working in. It provides a meaningful, original and simple way to access the author's 30 years of consulting experience, by making it readily available with simple images. As a training consultant, learner and practioners of learning as transformation I particularly appreciated how this book frames the often complex work of sharing "best practices" as a work of "naming the world" - in line with a Freireian pedagogy. As the ideas in the PRIMES have proven to work in a variety of contexts for transformational efforts, reading the book stimulates and inspires the reader to put these "lessons learned" into practice. Ultimately, THE PRIME is a book for leaders during organizational change efforts.

Enlightening and Easy to Read

I had the pleasure of taking a graduate course with the author of "The Primes: How Any Group Can Solve Any Problem" which means I read the book several times, cover to cover. The book is easy to read and the pictures provide good visuals for understanding the content. Explanations of the discovery or creation of each prime provide great examples of the meaning and implementation. Not only do the primes teach about problem-solving and leadership but many of them also caused me to look inward and evaluate my own behavior and state of being.

I will admit it was helpful to have the creator available for consultation and explanation but even so it is a great book.

An elementary treatment of a complex subject

William Cohen is a retired major general from the U.S. Air Force Reserve, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and holds a doctorate of philosophy in management from Claremont Graduate University where he studied under Peter Drucker. Drucker was a long-time advocate of the U.S. military's model of leadership development. As both Drucker's disciple and a product of military leadership development himself, Cohen seeks to explain and distill military leadership doctrines into beneficial concepts apart from their original battlefield context. Heroic leadership therefore, "requires leading a group with absolute integrity while raising individual performance to a personal best and building a team spirit of sacrifice for the common good" (Cohen, 2010, p. 2).

The book is divided into three sections of eight chapters each. Part One, "The Eight Universal Laws of Heroic Leadership," contains basic leadership behaviors such as showing extraordinary commitment to tasks and prioritizing one's responsibility over one's personal gain. This section hails from a style approach to leadership theory (Northouse, 2007). Part Two, "The Eight Basic Influence Tools," details different communication methods and the situations in which they might be most useful. For instance, leaders should have the ability to understand the differences between such styles as deflection, enlistment, and negotiation, and be able to adapt their communication style to the task at hand. VERY INSIGHTFUL

excellent place to start

The authors do an awful lot in a small, handy book. For anyone new to the field of leadership studies, this book will get you oriented as well as point you to further resources.

As leadership studies quietly formalizes into its own field of study, materials such as this have become necessary -- not only as a way to crystallize what is being done, but to attract newcomers who have had enough of the airport bookstore variety. There is an actual field of study here, and these fellows do a fine job acquainting the reader with the basics.

Lightweight, small, accessible -- the book lives up to its title.

Poor narration

I couldn't finish it. The narration is killing me...and life is just too short to suffer through this. The book is not being 'expressed' through the narrator. The narrator has his own style and what you get is that style - very strongly expressed. He could be reading ANY book - I don't think he is even hearing the words he is saying. I bet if we stopped him to ask what he just read he would have no idea. And that's the problem. After a few minutes I realize I have no idea what he is saying - my mind wanders because I'm sure the narrators mind has wandered. He is just not present or focused on the book and I can't get present either.
