No Larking about with Jack

Brilliant story and tremendously read.

Loved the pace of the book with Jack Karl at his heroic best.

Not the best of the series

Huge fan of the Jack Lark series. Found this book to be very slow indeed compared to others. Great performance by narrator

Needs an edit

He writes so well about the terrors of war, fighting - comradeship that it's hard to mark the book down but, unfortunately, once off his natural path however, is where things start to go wrong. The heroine in this book is, apparently, beautiful - but, oh, how many times do we have to hear it??? Once into the realms of relationships, women and sex it all gets just so tedious and unrealistic. Needs an editor to crack the whip. Apart from that his books are usually a good read.

Diane Ackerman's The Zookeeper's Wife is the story of Antonina Zabinski, the wife of Jan, director of Warsaw's zoo in the 1930s. Interesting premise for a story

I have not completed the book yet. It is interesting the way it advances the reader through history, and gives in depth mention to a few time periods on our planet, delving into a narrative that focuses on one persons' possession of the blessing stone and how its meaning is interpreted by the people who encounter it. The story is fragmented, and takes lots of liberties of course with very ancient history. It is interesting, but I just don't feel totally engaged, although I'm not sure this is just me or the author. It is pretty ambitious to cover 100,000 years of history in a few hundred pages and really keep people into the story. Looking forward to the book club discussion to see what others' impressions are.

Very absorbing journey though human history

I love historical fiction and this really quenched my thirst for it! The book is comprised of eight short stories, each taking place in a different time and place in human history, from prehistoric through to the American Pioneers journeying west in the mid 19th century. The stories were rich with details and fascinating glimpses into history. Very well written and seemingly well-researched although I have not checked many facts. Most of it seemed very realistic, in any case. I also appreciate that this book is not a romantic love story (although a couple of the stories contain very tangential love stories), as all too many historical novels turn out to be. What I particularly loved is that it gave me a little piece of many different times in history, rather than just one setting. Like eight mini-historical novels in one!

What made the experience of listening to The Night She Won Miss America the most enjoyable?

The narrator sounds like (but isn't) the character from Miss Congeniality - Miss Rhode Island.

Strange but (almost) true

Sophomoric

The writing in this book is bad, bad, bad. It sounds/reads like it was written by a teenager who flunked her creative writing class. When I first heard the line, "My Knight in Shining Armor" (or something like that), I should have stopped. The the reader of the book was terrible at pacing the story, made the main character sound like a whining, spoiled, and idiotic brat, and made me groan as she read. I stuck with the book since it is for my book group, but what a perfect waste of time.

Decorations .

Off to the High Country this time.

Cattle Duffing and the great alarms still, of the perceived threat of Communism in Australia during the 1930's. Oh and the search for Bushrangers' loot.

A quick look at the racism prevalent at the time, sexual inequality and chauvinism and..

The last lines sure brought a chuckle. A grand exit. However a person needs to know a little about Aussie books and awards to get the joke.

If you do not know much about Australia it may help to read up on some of the Artists of the 30's in Australia too. Norman Lindsay. These are like the decorations on the iced cake.

This series is curious. On one hand we find the almost serial adventures of our hero, Rolly, and his friends and family and on the other hand, an introduction to the great events of the time in NSW. There is also the look at attitudes over a wide spectrum of society.. The more I listen the more I love this series.

If you only check the 'Rowland Sinclair Mysteries' you will miss out on another book in the series, 'A Dangerous Language' so do an Audible Search for Sulari Gentill to locate it. Its worth the listen. A prequil to the series I have only read about, Sulari Gentill gave free to her reading fans.

I adore Sarah Lark's books and this book didn't disappoint. I could not stop listening, wanting and needing to know what happened next . I hope this story continues. an excellent read which provides so much more than just a story, it explains about the different lives of the people of New Zealand.
