Old Doc Newton
I can't tell you what I thought at first when I found this title and what the subject
matter was. There was just this warm, calm, loving feeling and I bought it straight away. You see, this man was my family doctor. He took care of me when I was a little
girl, and he saved my life when I was thirteen. Words cannot express how much I loved this man and his gruff friendly voice. Yes, he always had that cigar in his mouth, but I never saw it lit really. Mama couldn't stand it, though, lit or not. He made house calls...Mama's "sick" headaches (migraines), my measles, tonsilitis, and chicken pox! My family's relationship with the Newton family actually began before I was born when my parents and grandparents lived in half of the Newton family duplex on Main Street in Narrows. (Their dog, Poochie who loved to chase cars and was lost to that fascination, is also buried in the pet cemetery in the Newton back yard.) Always Doc Newton, he became known as "Old" Doc Newton when his son, Maury, also came to practice medicine in Narrows. His son "Dickie" has captured his essence in this book in a way only a son who loved his father very much could, and when he writes about him, I can hear his father's voice in my mind again. We loved Doc Newton and we always felt he loved us, too. He was just always there for us, and when he was gone there was a gap that could never be filled by just one person. Anyone who reads this book will fall under his magical spell and hopefully share a bit in our wonderful memories of a truly beloved and missed friend.
Excellent account of Narrows' early years
Excellent account of Narrows' early years. The Newtons were some of the finest physician s that I have known. I find pleasure in rereading this little book over and over.
As the author of Miracle on the Nars
As the author of Miracles on the Nars, the review by Betsy was meaningful and poignant. It was so grand to hear the personal knowledge that she had of my father, "Old Doc Newton." Betsy's review expressed deep love and emotion for this man "and his gruff, friendly voice." Her remembrance of his unlit cigar captured the essence of remembrance of him. Her account of his saving her life at age 13 brought tears to my eyes because I knew how he agonized to save her, as he did with all of his patients. I trust this essence was captured in the book, Miracles on the Nars. Stories by Betsy of living in my home in Narrows and knowing the entire Newton family bring warm thoughts to me and I am certain to many readers of this book. She even remembered our doggie buying ground in our backyard where their dog, Poochie, was buried.
