No site better represents the importance of the Sumerians than the city of Uruk. Between the fourth and the third millennium BCE, Uruk was one of several city-states in the land of Sumer, located in the southern end of the Fertile Crescent, between the two great rivers of the Tigris and the Euphrates. Discovered in the late 19th century by the British archaeologist William Loftus, it is this site that has revealed much of what is now known of the Sumerian, Akkadian, and Neo-Sumerian people.

Although Uruk was not the only city that the Sumerians built during the Uruk period, it was by far the greatest and also the source of most of the archeological and written evidence concerning early Sumerian culture. Uruk went from being the worlds first city to the most important political and cultural center in the ancient Near East in relatively quick fashion. Around 3200 BCE, the Sumerian Uruk culture began to expand beyond the borders of Sumer, which coincided with the emergence of writing.

Definitely a book I'd recommend.

I was familiar with all of the mythologies and gods (being obsessed with Greek mythology like I am) in this book but that didn't even take away how enjoyable it was to read. It would also be a great book for those who are less familiar with them.

There are quick introduction about the gods and goddesses, their names (and Roman names), who they are related to (although they're pretty much all related to each other) and other information like that. There are also chapters about Oedipus, the Trojan War (this was my favorite), Medusa, Heracles and more.

Overall, Greek Gods: The Gods and Goddesses of Greek Mythology by Patrick Auerbach was a quick but very interesting and informative read about the Greek gods and the most known mythologies surrounding them. The writing style was simple and easy to read but also unique in its own way. Definitely a book I'd recommend.

Informative & well written. Worth purchase!

This book is well written and informative. Actually, I had a huge interest to know more about Greek Gods and form the wake of my curiosity to know more about that ancient mythology, I picked this book two weeks ago. This book impressed me and now I must have to say huge thanks to my friend for suggesting this such an awesome book.

Inside here I have found lots of info about ancient Greeks. This read helped me to enlarge my knowledge about this ancient mythology. The author has done a fantastic job and presented all the chapter organized way. Throughout this read I have come to know about the tales of gods and goddesses such Aphrodite, Athena, Zeus, Apollo and much more. So guys, if you have any interest to know these tales and want to enlarge your knowledge about history, then donât feel hesitate to read this book. I recommend it.

Greek Goddess is the most loved of my children

Greek Goddess is the most loved of my children, I generally read them a great deal of books about the rich culture and legendary divine forces of the past. In all the goddess, I don't care for the qualities of Zeus since he had a great deal of illicit relationships of various ladies at his opportunity. I do have confidence in Eros as a cupid of adoration and I read books about him how individuals around then that he shot got began to look all starry eyed at each other.

The Parthian people created an empire that lasted almost 500 years, from the mid-3rd century BCE until 224 CE, and it stretched from the Euphrates River in the west to Central Asia and the borders of Bactria in the east (Brosius 2010, 83).

The book was a bit too brief, only providing a summary of the Empire.

Good for real historian

Interesting book

Little more than a grade C-B College level paper

This is more of a pamphlet than a book. It reads like a College level term paper and I would only grade it as being worth a C or B depending on the level of the class and what is expected from the paper. The book contains very little information on the rise of the Parthian Empire or on its fall. There is nothing about how it displaced the Seleucids and almost nothing about how the Parthians were replaced by the Sassanids. While the subtitle accurately represents the Parthians as one of Rome's greatest enemies, the book only mentions some of the Roman Emperors who fought with them, but gives no details concerning the numerous battles that were fought. The book does contain information on Parthian Zoroastrianism and on the Parthian involvement in the Silk Road trade route. There is no index or even any page numbers in the book, and it relies on only 17 referenced sources. It contains some poorly reproduced black and white photographs of statues of leaders and ruins, and two very poorly reproduced maps.

This is not an expensive publication, but you get what you paid for. I think that I would have been much better served had I spent a few more dollars and purchased one of the two sources listed in the book that specifically discuss the Parthian Empire in more detail (Brosius, The Persians and Colledge, The Parthians).

However they went into Egypt anyway and therein lies this history.

Eventually, civil war became inevitable when Pompey accepted the leadership of the Optimates, the oligarchic faction which was in deadly opposition to the common people. By accepting this leadership, Pompey vaulted to the head of a party dedicated to the material interests of Rome's wealthy bankers, merchants, and landed gentry who looked favorably on a dictatorship which protected their interests. But Caesar was too quick for Pompey, and prevailed in the subsequent bloody civil war. His victory ushered in an incredible series of reforms which were to shape Roman affairs for another 500 years. Caesar's dictatorship became the model of a military monarchy which guided the Roman Empire until its demise.

Although Mommsen used the A.U.C. system of Roman years, which begins as the Roman year one (754 BC), we have transposed these dates to those of the Christian era. All dates are BC except where otherwise indicated.

We do not recommend Mommsen for those without a proper understanding of Roman Republican history. The work of Cyril Robinson would be a great place to start for the amateur, armchair historian.

A long journey into the past

There were less cumbersome options when choosing to dive into a Mommsen writing. Having committed to reading a work by every Nobel Laureate for Literature and Mommsen being only the second chronologically, it would have been wiser to choose a shorter, singular work. But too many of the man's contemporaries like Mark Twain raved about his comprehensive History of Rome and so, alas, this long and exhaustive project. Mommsen is accused of tediousness in his style but, in truth, he is just immensely comprehensive and invested in his quest to show us our ancient past. And, of course, this isn't just Rome but western civilization from Rome's founding and it's earliest monarchic origin, through its various republican and democratic incarnations bringing us full circle with the return of monarchy under Julius Caesar.

I think this book was a high school paper. There are grammar errors. A significant section of the book consists of recitations of Celt god names. This is not up to audible quality.
