Interesting

I found all of the stories interesting and it had a great deal of facts and research out into it. But I have to admit that this was my first Audible, and I did have a hard time with it. The book was great but I found the narration rather monotone and boring. I had to put it down numerous times for that reason alone. But I loved the conspiracies. And leanstone books is awesome.

Excellent, Engaging Story That Needs To Be Heard

The story of the successful slave rebellion. This work is very engaging, and the subject is rarely studied by today's students. I have recommended this book to many people, it is really great.

Important History

This was a great book! It helped me understand the importance of Haiti prior to gaining independence from France and why the country is in its state today. The story is heartbreaking but also empowering and reading it will make you want to know more about Haiti and what can be done to help its citizens.

Another point of view

Good book, allot of detail which I might have missed from reading other books of this nature. The book seemed a little bias towards the planter class in my opinion. I got the feeling that the Insurgents or slaves that revolted where more interested in seeking revenge than their freedom. Yet it was a pretty accurate description on how things might have been back then in Haiti.

Great & Detailed

This book was a true pleasure to listen to. This author is the kind of historian who deserves to be teaching high school students (I mean this as a compliment) because while makes sure to include all relevant details about the Haitian revolution, he makes this book read like a fascinating story. This is a wonderful and well developed book, suitable for both laymen and scholars.

A book every generation should read

We should never forget and take all measure to ensure we keep Evil on its leash and never side with it. Moderates must always take a stand for humanity and justice.

I really enjoyed hearing the facts and human approach to all of this. We are flawed creatures but we must always do the right thing.

So personal!

I really liked that the author read this herself. She had a calming voice and although the content was serious, I enjoyed listening on my commute to work because of that calming influence. Also, the subject matter was pretty personal at times and it definitely just made sense that she would narrate herself (sometimes I don't like author reads).

The book itself was a scientific but also very personal look at the affects of mass trauma on a person and their family. Incredibly fascinating and more relevant to our times that one would hope. Very well written.

Frederick II was NOT a Mormon

The Charles River Editor Publishers have used the same introductory template in all of their 440 volumes of material. In this one they forgot to overwrite the introduction to the Brigham Young biography, so they talk about Frederick II (18th Cebtury) as being a great Mormon leader (19th Century). I bought it anyway because I love to read historical non-fiction. I have over two hundred of these Charles River Editor books in my personal Kindle archive.

Zero Stars if that was possible

The Charles River Editors was founded by Harvard and MIT alumina however this edition has the quality of content that one would expect from a high school student. There are editing errors/mis-usages in the text. The treatment of all subjects is superficial and disjointed. It is definitely not worth the price charged and I'm not certain it would be worth reading even as a give-away. I will not be purchasing anything from Charles River Editors in the future.

Really really good.

It's on par with the other books written by Antony Beevor, but this one seems to emphasise the civilian blight of germans once the Soviet Union crossed the reich's borders.

Really full of small anecdotes that make the war feel more "human" instead of the book being just a chronological catalogue of who did what, when and why.

If only there could have been more

I was absolutely hooked from start to finish. The detail was, in my opinion, perfectly balanced. Tough listening in places but the reality of war shouldn't be avoided. Particularly poignant listening, as I now live in the former East Berlin and work within 5 minutes of the Führerbunker.

War and horror

This well researched book is full of horrendous detail. It is very well read. A must if interested in WWII.

Enthralling

An easy listen, I would recommend for any WWII enthusiast. Some horrific images portrayed throughout.

Good book with good narration.

Harrowing stuff. An eye opener on the suffering of the German civilians.

4 stars because I felt a bit overwhelmed by the military and geographic detail. That problem probably doesn't arise in the printed version with it maps.

The speed and strength of the narration greatly adds to the sense of an unfolding catastrophe . Compelling book..

Great book!

I've only read about a 1/4 so far but it's well written and extremely incisive.

Homebrewers you can recreate history. Pull up a stool.

I'm not a home brewer but there are recipes in this book for those who are. I got this book because of the history and historical information presented. Mankind has always been interested in brews, fermentation and the consumption of mind altering concoctions. Since a lot of grains naturally ferment in given conditions this book just traces the logical outcome, its place in history and then provides the recipe. This will appeal to any foodie and any history buff. Homebrewers will have to report if the recipes work. But the recipes included seem to be well presented and each product a 5 gallon quantity. The author has also provided suggest meals with recipes to go with each beverage. For example brew Midas Touch and drink it with spicey barbecue lamb and lentil stew.

Came for the beer, and left with the history lesson

I'll be honest, I'm not much of a reader but I did read this book from cover to cover. I was interested in seeing the recipes that would be included in this book. I was a little disappointed in that the recipes are all in extract form, so converting to all grain is a bit of a pain. I plan to make the Chateau Jiahu when I get a chance, so I have yet to make a brew from this book. There are some discrepancies in the vital statistics of the brews based off of Dogfish Heads website. So double check with the website and beer descriptions to see if you want to make some changes to the recipes provided.

The content outside of the recipes is outstanding. It has really sparked my interest in exploring other content out there about ancient civilizations. It gets a little unorganized at times when the writer mixes in his travels but still entertaining and he ties it in to the overall journey of discovering ancient brews. I'd suggest having a web search device handy when reading to get a better idea on some of the areas the writer describes. Really enjoyed doing further reading and image viewing on Midas Tumulus.

Fascinating Bit of History

If you're a fan of pirate and buccaneer history, of the Caribbean, or just a history buff in general, I'd highly recommend this book. Bob Marx is THE preeminent authority on the Sunken City of Port Royal, Jamaica, an engaging author, and this is one of his best works.

Mr Marx does a great job laying out the lusty, drunken history of this blood-soaked buccaneer town, once the richest in the Caribbean, if not the New World. Through his archaeological finds, he paints a lively picture of the once-bustling city and brings to life the sea-dogs, whores, artisans, merchants, and other colorful characters that once called Port Royal home.

Additionally, the narrator of this book adds much to Mr Marx's already-exciting tale. Her recitation is all at once warm, engaging, and authoritative - perfect for the written word of one of underwater archaeology's top experts.

All said and done, I am VERY pleased I stumbled across this gem!
