Great second book!

This takes place a few months after book 1. Zaria and her friends have to find a certain sword in order to rescue Hart. Along the way they face a multitude of magical creatures and Zaria is plagued by something very sinister. What is following her in the shadows?

I really enjoyed book 1 but have to say that Keira Gillett has upped her game with this installment. This is darker, scarier and more action packed than the previous one and I ended up listening to it in a day!

Once again, the authors characters are extremely well written and developed. They all evolve and grow throughout the story and you can't help but root for Zaria! Poor Zaria, though. She has a sense that something evil is following her and it's even invading her dreams. She's also being very hard on herself and shouldering the blame for being tricked in book 1.

The plot was fast paced, entertaining and engaging.There is never a dull moment when it comes to the wonderful word that the author has created. Richly detailed and totally captivating, this series has the potential to be great. I'm realy looking forward to more adventures from Zaria and her friends.

Michele Carpenter did a great job again. She has a load of different tones and voices for all the characters and it's easy to distinguish who's talking.

Nice, gentle and magical story. You can read this separate, but I think it's really meant to be in the series.

There's a third book coming, so I will continue to follow the adventures of Zaria and her friends.

The books are a nice read also for grown ups who don't want (a lot) of blood and gore. The setting in Norway is great, it brings back childhood memories - my parents were in Norway for work, and we had a lot of going back holidays.

I liked it even more than the first book! The characters evolve with every new step in this adventure. I loved all the realms they visited and the new beings they encounter. The specter is an interesting twist in the story and keeps you wondering until the end. I really enjoyed this book!

I really enjoyed the starting book of the trilogy, and this one does not disappoint. It does suffer from the usual "incompleteness" syndrome that is hereditary in the middle episodes of a series, but it does a good job of raising the stakes for the last book.

I find the tone charming throughout, the banter between Zaria and her friends is rather humorous, and the new setting and creatures keep things rolling.

I loved getting to know more about Lady Katerine in Sisters of Wind and Flame! Sheâs one of those evil characters that youâll love to hate, so it was great seeing how she came to be that way. Before she came to court, she was simply Ekaterina, from a poor family just trying to survive. Then three days after her and her twinâs 17th birthday, their Elemental powers presented themselves. Their immediately enlisted into the kingâs army, but itâs not the grand life Katerine hoped for. Her sister is accepted into the fold and finds friends with the other Torchers (fire elementals), while Katerine is alone as the only Rider (air elemental). She doesnât want to be only a healer, waiting for something to do and looked down upon. Then she meets the duke and learns that air can give life, but it can also take it away.

Sisters of Wind and Flame is the perfect insight into the evil that is Lady Katerine. Sheâs always been ambitious and selfish, but wielding such great power has gone to her head. Then losing her sister caused something to snap. I cannot wait to get more of her in Riot of Storm and Smoke!

Not bad

Twins with elemental magic. I will not give it away, but the story was interesting and the characters were fun.

A must-read for fans

This is Lady Katerine's backstory and a prequel of sorts to Threats of Sky and Sea.

"But I only make sure that life keeps its promise: that it ends."

She was never a good person at heart but after reading this, I can understand how a hard life shaped her into the woman she became. She wasn't corrupted by wealth, power, or the killing... it just exposed her true nature. What became hell for Ardie was everything she'd always dreamed of.

Her sister Elena had a kind spirit but ended up meeting a truly sad fate and one she'd done nothing to deserve. Elena was the only person Kat still had a shred of feeling for and obviously, the loss was her final push beyond the point of no return.

Kat is not a character I'd ever care for but if you're interested in getting inside her head, Sisters of Wind and Flame is well worth your time.

Eye Opening!

This prequel was great! It really explains where Kat came from, and how she became the soulless pawn she is. Definitely a must read for fans!!

This is an excellent collection of stories based on Alice in Wonderland, All of them were interesting, entertaining and drew you in...It takes talent to write a good short story, and these authors nailed it....Quite enjoyable and narrated perfectly...I recommend!!!

A New Spin on a Classic!

Alice in Wonderland was one of my favorite stories growing up and I don't how many times, I read, listened, and watched it! So when I had the opportunity to listen to these different versions of Alice, I could not pass it up!

Each one of these stories was very entertaining, creative and unique and the narrator did an amazing job on each of the stories!

Yes. I loved the fact that you could go to any story to listen to it again. It is a great book for when you have only a little bit of time. I don't think an story was more than 30 minutes or so.

Alice, of course, in all of her different interpretations!

What about Rhiannon Angells performance did you like?

Ms. Angell's narration was wonderful. Since this is an anthology, she was able to present each story with the unique spin that it required. She made you think that you were in England, in Southern Florida and even in the middle of the universe.

Subversive, edgy and yes, gruesome. An excellent sequel to Half Bad

Sally Green may have borrowed heavily from familiar YA story lines about witches and their craft--there doesn't seem to be much that's innovative in the genre since Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials. However she definitely has, with this second installment put her own imprimatur on the genre. Half Wild is quite impressive, and at times, more than a little revolting. This is not Harry, Ron and Hermione searching for Deathly Hallows. Not by a long shot.

The continuing saga of half code Nathan and his enamored companion Gabriel and the fair Annalise is ratcheted up a notch. Like father Marcus, Nathan's gift is to transform into wild animals. Much of the first half is given over to exploring the ability and controlling it, while simultaneously searching for and freeing girlfriend Annalise. I found the first third of the book riveting. Second installments notoriously lag, and Half Wild does a bit in the middle. Also, there's way too much time spent looking for the girlfriend and nattering about "the Alliance".

That said, Green does get things back on track for an action-packed, bang-up ending. There's more than a bit of violence in this book--there's loads of it, and only each parent can judge what is suitable for their teenager. The last chapter had an incident between father and son I found absolutely disgusting. To my utter amazement, other reviewers don't seem to be bothered a bit. Perhaps I'm too squeamish. I wouldn't hesitate to let 15 year olds and up read this, but certainly not preteens. The violence may not be indiscriminate or random, but it is lavish and constant. An interesting conundrum for teenage parents--a wonderfully written, problematic book.

Black vs. White vs. Half

Nathan is at it again, picking up right where Half Bad left off. The beginning was a little slow to get going but once new and old friends pop up again the story really takes off. I appreciate the time given to some family bonding (though I won't say more so that there aren't any spoilers). I can't wait for the third book but definitely will have to do just that, wait.

I enjoyed this story very much

After the plague a young man lives alone in the mountains for five years until his desire to "talk to someone" drives him to a city. There he gets his desire but has to brave wild animals and even wilder people to keep his new found "family". .I enjoyed this story very much. I hope the author continues following these young survivors.

I LOVE this story!! Forced to work together to save themselves, each other, and others who have survived, two young adults fight to stay alive and provide a safe living area for children and adults. The characters are well-developed and the Reader can feel the fear, joy, and excitement of each character as they work together to survive. An excellent story and well worth the read!!!!

Better read than listened to.

I think this might be a book that is better read than listened to. I devoured the first book of the series after borrowing it from the library. Library didn't have the second one so I decided to listen to it on audible. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't excite me as much as I think reading it would have done.

Really enjoyed it

I am so sooo pleased that I persevered through Book 1. The narrator of the first book was awful to listen to but I kept with it as I knew a different person was reading this , the second book. Really enjoyed this narration just hope Book 3 is read as well as I can't wait to hear what happens next.

Highly recommended story of people who MUST be heroes!

This story is a highly creative effort. I have really enjoyed all four volumes so far. The story continues, and I alternate between wanting a conclusion and wanting the story to continue across many more books. Highly Recommended! DISCLOSURE: I and my son have both volunteered at the charitable agency where the author is ceo, but I don't think we ever met him.

Great series and this book Fear is my favorite so far!

No spoilers here. I really enjoyed this book. I've read the first two in the series. Each book seems better than the one before (although I liked all of them). This is my favorite. I actually was so into it, I went back to the first two to brush up on little tid bits that were linked to this. The author has really done a nice job of setting the series to build. I'm looking forward to book four. It is a good young adult/teen read. It has a nice balance of relationship, action, mystery, and super power that I enjoy and is popular among young readers. The main characters are interesting and have positive personality traits. I teach 4th grade at a Christian school and although this is over their level for the most part, I'd totally suggest it for my former students or older students where I teach and to families I know. It is a good clean positive book series. It doesn't necessarily quote scripture and hit you with Christianity but it has hints of Christian character which I also really liked. Really enjoyed Fear and look forward to future books.

Waiting for the movies--ferris bueller meets hunger games

I'm giving this book, for the whole chronicle, five stars. They are NOT perfect works, but the author is a great storyteller. I wish I could edit; some bits are trite, words are sometimes used incorrectly and there are several awkward emotional scenes that just don't pass the reality test. BUT, plot lines move well, and there are enough action scenes to make a good screenplay. Somebody... Make this happen.

The Hero Chronicles is a great read!

I just read all 3 of The Hero Chronicles in 2 days.

What a wonderful series Mettey has created and shared with the world. I feel like I've just watched 3 great movies in my head. His writing is such that I felt like I was right there with The 4. Awesome! Can't wait for more....thank you for sharing the Thusian world with us.

charmingly old-fashioned series strong three

"Charmingly old-fashioned" is how I would describe Michael Pryor's series The Lasw of Magic, which begins with Blaze of Glory (reviewed separately) and continues with Heart of Gold, Word of Honour, and the most recent, due out this summer--Time of Trial, all of which I'll review as a group here. The concluding book will be Hour of Need.

The series is set in an alternate England (called Albion) during the Edwardian Age, on the cusp of WWI at first and then at the start of war in the final two books. The Industrial Revolution happened beside a parallel magical revolution and the two are deeply intertwined in day to day life, though magic less so since it is limited to those with a natural born talent for it, a talent which can be improved and honed via courses of study, the titular "Laws" as well as the study of the ancient languages that underlie most spells.

The main character is Aubrey Fitzwilliam, whose father is the Prime Minister and whose mother is a famed explorer/naturalist. Aubrey is one of those with magical talent--a lot of it, as well as a head for the hard science aspect of it, what he calls "Rational Magic." His best friend and constant companion, devoid of any magical talent himself but full of surprising other ones, is George. The girl he meets in book one and then develops a relationship with, and who thus joins him in all his adventures, is Caroline, who is more than capable in a host of ways (she's a martial arts expert) despite having no magic. The "big bad" of the series is a completely amoral magician, Dr. Tremaine, who is pushing the world toward world war for the singular purpose that the needs a lot of blood sacrifices to cast a spell of immortality on himself.

My review of Blaze of Glory called it a solid if not compelling book that piqued my interest enough to want to continue. I'm glad I did for while it does have some of the same flaws as that first book, in general the books gradually improve and deepen as the series goes on while the world turns more grim and Aubrey grows a bit older.

Heart of Gold deals with trying to recover an object central to Gallian's (France) existence and with a "soul-stealer" who is turning people into zombies. In Word of Honour, the three friends head of to university and end up mixed up in sabotaged submersibles, a bank theft, and international finance.
