Early Ed McBain

These are short stories by "The author later known as Ed McBain". Learned that he was born to Italian/American Parents. (Though he obviously didn't care for that categorization - See Steve Carella's comments from more recent 87th Precinct Novels). The Author.. was born in NYC (believe it was Italian Harlem).

IF you are an Ed McBain addict (as I am) then buy this, to get an idea of the author's development. IF you are new to McBain Try a later 87th Precinct Novel. ("Fiddler's" is quite good.) OR the Matthew Hope Series is Excellent. ("There was a Little Girl" comes to mind.)

McBain

McBain's writing is absolutely great. Too bad he is gone now and I have to re-read his books. Great writer.

Not as good as his Novels

I've been addicted to Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series of novels for more years than I care to admit, and am also a fan of his Matthew Hope series. This book, however, is a collection of short stories --- and old ones at that (all written from 1952-57) ---- and I wasn't sure how much I'd like it. I'm not much of a short story fan normally, but hey, this is McBain so I thought it was worth a try. Well, the nicest thing I can say is this was a relatively quick read for 476 pages. But I didn't find these stories nearly as gripping, interesting, or funny as McBain's novels. And no, the writing wasn't as sharp either.

I did, however, like his introductions of some of these stories, where he gives you the inside scoop on how the story either came to be written or published. For me, those descriptions were far more interesting than the stories themselves. Granted, these short stories were all written very early in McBain's career, before the first 87th Precinct novel was written, but most of them are either too predictable and full of cliches, or just plain weird. Not that this is entirely awful, it's not. There are a few flashes of fine writing and suspense in some of these stories, just not consisently so.

If you're a McBain fan, this collection will be of interest, but it would certainly NOT be the place for a beginner to start.

Satirical brilliance

Saki is a favorite of mine, and I often turn to these familiar tales as I would to an old photograph album of times gone by.

There are a few dark, haunting tales such as "The Image of the Lost Soul" and "The Music on the Hill," but most of the stories here are light and funny. We are introduced to social-climbing hostesses, party-crashers, kleptomaniac relatives, aristocrats with amnesia, precocious children, reticent men in trying situations, scheming shopkeepers, and hapless travelers. All sparkle with originality and humor, and May and Davidson bring each one to life.

The author's prejudices against suffragettes, labor unions, and so forth, are evident. If this offends some, recall that these things are also a part of what makes Saki so very much a man of his time and social station. In short, there is no such thing as Edwardian "political correctness," however much we'd like to believe it was all "Downton Abbey."

Saki's death at the age of 45 while fighting in World War I cut short a brilliant writing career. I often wonder what he would have had to say about the dissolution of the society he knew so well...

The only thing I would change is that this collection is missing "The Interlopers," an eerie classic. Still, this is an extensive collection. I highly recommend it to all Saki fans as most other readings are quite short by comparison, and many are not performed half as well as those you'll hear here.

Wonderful collection for Saki fans

I would have given this 5 stars but for the fact that the memory of an old record from the public library I listened to as a child is hard to live up to. The narrators here are very good though. If you are not familiar with Saki writings - then this is an excellent collection for those who love the subtle wit and dry British humor that was his style (in order to appreciate it fully). Also included in this book are a few stories that were not meant to be comedic. He was a master of what he did and I enjoyed this audio very much.

Devilishly witty

A gross (more or less) of short stories ranging from very short to extremely short. Very few duds and almost all with a dry, slyly cynical, rapier-witted twist in the final sentence. Perfect for car listening and often laugh-out-loud funny. I often rewound to listen to the same story twice just to savor Saki's way with the Queen's English.

Everything was great except for it's totallystupid

Saki is a singular writer, not in style but in substance.

Just one complaint

This is a fine collection. The narration is also good. The one REALLY annoying characteristic is that there is no break between stories. No announcement of author, title, date etc. The next story just starts in with even less pause than between sentences within a story. If it were not for the fact that the narrator changes, you would not even be able to tell only by listening when one ends and the next one starts.

Review of Options by John Varley

I wanted to listen to this collection because of one story: Options by John Varley. Options is one of Varleys 8-Worlds stories and fits early in the overall chronology, circa 100 O.E., Occupation Earth. Varley handles the subject of what would happen to society if easy, safe and completely reversible sex-changing were to become a reality. When this was written in 1979 is was far more shocking and fantastic that is may seem today. The wonder of the story is that Varley manages to take the reader, or listener in this case, from the initial reaction of shock and disgust to the point of empathy for the sex-changing character. Varley is one of the science fiction greats. Listen to this story and you will hear why.

Get on with the next one!

.....love WB, even better when read by him, the unspent letters chapter could not have been done better, v funny.

If I could remember them my vocabulary would be greatly expanded, but even though I can't recall all the Lovely rounded mouthfuls of words, especially the vitriolic ones, I love hearing them.

This is an odd format, some stories linked most not, still Loads of lovely characters - good job none as so boring as to have to get jobs on the checkout at Sainsbury's.

Can't wait for the next one - crack on William.

Shards of life from the almost famous and might have been rich

William Boyd plays with form again, this time stretching the short story with teasing interrelationships. Almost all of the stories stand alone as satisfying dishes forming a bigger whole. Its a bit like a tasting menu in a Michelin restaurant. Just ever so slightly pretentious but so classy and clever that you can easily forgive the showy in jokes.

Bethany is a tragic masterpiece in personal chaos but personally I liked the Shakespearean tragic fall of the man who should have stuck to kissing.

Almost every one of these stories is a beautiful funny and tasty dish worthy of Heston at his best.

Flawless Small Diamonds

These beautifully crafted stories stand alone as

clear evidence of Boyds mastery of the form. Moreover they are hugely entertaining and in several I can also see glimpses of what they might have been in longer form ie full novels.

However, nothing is flabby here and sometimes less is more. In this case less is perfect.

Unsent Letters is brilliant and totally comes alive when read. Left me wanting more which is always a good sign. Thank you Mr B.
