Many un-researched assumptions

The author makes many assumptions which have not been properly researched, for example:

* "... In 1962, Nelson Mandela, a leader of the band African National Congress, was on trial because he had left the country without permission..." If the author had done proper research he would have found that Nelson Mandela was indeed on trial, but NOT because he left the country without permission. He fled the country because he was wanted by the police for instigating industrial strikes -- a well documented fact that would have been found with the smallest amount of research. In any country in the world, if you or I or any reader instigates industrial strikes costing his home country many millions in lost wages, lost production, lost jobs and lost taxes, and then flees his home country, would the governemnt of that country not prosecute that person, regardless of skin colour?

* "...From the moment the Dutch colonists set foot on the Cape in 1652, this nation steered a straight course toward apartheid..." Letters of sailors and diaries of many ships' captains, the most famous being the "Scheepsjournael ende Daghregister" (ship's journal and diary) of Jan van Riebeeck, document the fact that the Cape of Good Hope was uninhabited wilderness when the Dutch settled there in 1652. After setting foot on the Cape of Good Hope, it was many days before they met some wanderers of the Khoi-Khoi and Khoi-San (Bushmen) -- these were wanderers and were not displaced from the land by the Dutch, because they did not inhabit it on a permanent basis. The Dutch later imported slaves from Malaysia because there was no local population to enslave. The Dutch established he first trading post to supply fresh fruit and food supplies to the benefit of all seafaring nations on the trading route to India. These facts are easy to find, had the author taken even the slightest trouble to do any unbiased research.

A fantastic book

If you like history, science and the step by step retelling of discovery this book is for you. The author deftly weaves together events across time and from sites around the world to give a cohesive vision of illness caused by infection, war, disease and transformation brought about by science. At times heart wrenching and disturbing but an amazing read nonetheless. Excellent!

Great Book!!!!!

OK. This purports to be the story of the development of sulfa drugs. Boring, you say? That's what I thought. I purchased it on the strengths of the other reviews. And, glad I did. This is the most intriguing and interesting story I've read this year. Extremely well told and narrated.

It is actually the history of the treatment (or lack thereof) of bacterial infections over the years. I'll bet you didn't know Calvin Coolidge had a son who died because a blister on his foot got infected? Or that Doctors used phenols to treat a minor medical procedure on Queen Victoria? Or that the Nazis prevented the most brilliant scientists of their time from getting a Nobel prize?

At times I got a bit confused when the author backed up to explain some historical or preceding event. I rather think that had more to do with the fact that this is an audio book and you need to pay careful attention.

Overall, though, I really must give this story my highest ratings and would recommend it to the layman and scientist alike.

A pleasure in listening

It is a great pleasure to read a science author who knows both how to write and understands the subject. Thomas Hager is one such author. His manages to take both well know discoveries and little know episodes and weave them together into a story that is informative and entertaining. His descriptive writing is excellent, a rare talent in a writer who understands science.

The first part of the book does some jumping back and forth in time mostly to great effect as he reacquaints us with the discovery of the germ theory and early serum medicine.

Fresh History

Though abridged, the book manages to make a reasonably convincing case as to why the 20th Century was so bloody. Ferguson's theory is essentially this: hatred (of others) is an integral part of being human; so when peoples of different ethnicities living in close proximity experience economic instability, and when established order (or Empire) is in decline, the killing urge rears its ugly head waiting to be set free in the name of a war.

The World Wars, including the Cold War, are old subjects. However, Ferguson's writing throws out fresh perspectives, which alone will compensate for your valuable time.

The narration of Sean Barrett was excellent, as well.

Ban Islam from civil society.

This book just goes to show how quickly people can turn into killers. After reading this, you will know that genocide and mass murder is in the future and will be carried out by Islam. Islam is already carrying out murder almost every day in Europe.

Brilliant and Eye Opening

I loved this and find myself repeat listening often.

Puts the events of the last century into perspective.

Find out what your grand father actually fought for, and what our children may face in the future.

Rethink history

This changed my perception of the history of the last century. I had had a conventional British Good Guys (apart from the opium wars and that was before my time) versus the Bad Guys (everyone else at different periods of time). By the end, I realised that, apart from the great dictators, we were all much the same in our intentions and morality. I suppose tha, from black-and-white I now see everything in different shades of grey. The style gripped me from the start - this is how history should be taught. I did feel that more could have been said on almost everything but I think this may have been an effect of the abridgement (who does decide that a book would be better abridged?).

Interesting book,100 yrs of Anglo-American history

Clearly described history without much "spin". As an engineering major in college, I was not exposed to much of the history of the Victorian age. Very good stuff!

Great insight into the past.

Though the biased must be understood it is a great way to get the feelings of the time in which you can not receive in today's current literature on the topic.

The Great Man on the Great Democracies.

No one is better able through ability and experience to relate man's struggle in securing democracy and in doing so, in building Western Civilization.

This view of our history is made brilliant by Churchill's participation in what followed. Brilliant!

Fascinating and informative

I am a devout Catholic, but even I used to grimace a little when I would hear complaints about how the Church stifled science, condemned Galileo, held down uneducated people hundreds of years ago, etc. These are topics that are widely accepted as fact in this day and age, and rarely refuted in public, even by Catholic apologists.

In this book, however, all these topics and many, many more are discussed in great depth, and we learn about all the monumental contributions the Church made to virtually every pillar of western civilization. Science; astronomy; international law; economics; charity; etc. The list of Catholic inventions and research is truly amazing. "Who would have thought that modern economic theory began with a Franciscan friar in the 13th century?"

From an apologetics standpoint, I'd consider this book less as a Protestant vs. Catholic work. There is very little discussion of this since most of the discussions do not involve theology. Instead, I'd consider it an excellent primer for an atheist or agnostic who is of the opinion that the Catholic church has largely been a force for corruption and regression in the world.

Enlightening

Got this because of all the negative arguments I've heard about Catholicism...even by Catholics. Many I heard were misstatements following popular secular, media thinking, e.g the Pope's Regensburg lecture. I couldn't figure out how the Church survived all these generations if it was/is guilty of all this (supposed) villany. The book is an advocate for the faith but I think it does it very well. In some cases it argues to forcefully and takes too much credit. Islam, China, other religions are given scant credit for scientific, literary, artistic achievements or influences. Even if half of what Woods says is true (I suspect it's much, much more) it is a much needed revelation and tonic of the good the Church has done. It doesn't proselytize and it adroitly lays out very convincing arguments and historical facts. Highly recommended for those with an open mind.

I was completely amazed at the depth and breath of how much of Western Civilization owes the Catholic Church and thanks to this tremendously interesting, detailed, and substantiated book, I learned about it.

Excellent History

Compared with the Second, the First World War receives much less attention in popular history, including here on Audible. Macmillan has done a marvelous job of explaining the personalities and challenges faced at the 1919 peace conference in Paris. She sketches the leaders well and manages to explain the many interlocking issues without excessive detail or repetition. She avoids the conventional wisdom and offers a balanced view. The overall impact is a compelling narrative with humour and quite a few "aha!" moments when the modern outcomes of the peace conference ecome clear. The author might be faulted for an excess of focus on Woodrow Wilson, but the book does not suffer too much for it. An informative picture of moral relativism and Realpolitik emerges, both in the American camp and elsewhere.

Good book, well narrated

I have some familiarity with the topic but I am not sure that was necessary to appreciate this well written, thorough narrative of the conference of the Allied powers that was the final act of World War I. The author provides a very good description of the three men, Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau who together drew a new map of the world out of the destruction of WW I.

The author's style reminds me of Barbara Tuchman, who is one of my favorite authors. The book provides a wealth of information in a style that is never dry or boring. This is good narrative history that kept me interested in the story of one of the most important events of the 20th century. The author never got bogged down by the details as she told the final chapter of how the dynasties of Europe were replaced by a group of modern nations.

Ms. McMillan draws a fine picture, warts and all, of how these world changing decisions were made. Wilson is the idealist who gets worn down by the balance of power ideas of Clemenceau and Lloyd George. He finally lets them draw the map as long as the treaty includes the League of Nations. Clemenceau's goal is to grind down Germany and safeguard France. Lloyd George fights for the interests of England in Africa and the Middle East. The scene where the German delegation is presented with a treaty which they must sign or watch their country continue to starve shows how power was wielded by the Big Three.

I enjoyed the book very much and can only list a few high points in my limited space.

Superbly whimsical

A superbly whimsical miscellany of knowledge. The narrator matches the style of Bill Bryson impeccably. The range of subjects covered is wide, and the treatment of each is first class. If every child starting high school listened to this before choosing subjects, there would be a far greater enrolment in the sciences. Whether you're a kid of 9 or 90, you will find this fascinating. I cannot resist a minor quibble - the wealth of Johannesburg was not based on diamonds, but gold. The South African city founded on diamonds is Kimberly, whence the term Kimberlite, the volcanic rock that frequently yields diamonds. That aside, what a great book.

Long and Fun.

If youre interested in science in general this is a great book.

The price for over 15 hrs is a great buy.

Imposible to listen in one sesion.

This is indeed one of the best books I have had the good fortune to read and also one of the best narrations from all of my Audible purchases.

All Audible customers should consider purchasing this book, whether or not you are history fans. The book is captivating, once you start listening you will not be able to stop -

be prepared to have your life disrupted!!!

Outstanding.....

Every human being should listen to this book. Not only will it make you appreciate just how far we have come as a species, and how lucky we are to be here (so many other species failed to survive). It will also make you realise that there is so far we have yet to go and just how wrong we can be, and occasionally, right.

An amazing insight into "the only planet you will ever know".

Torn on this one...

I will first admit that I really like Bill Bryson and own all of his books - even "Palace Under the Alps". With that in mind, it won't be a surpise when I tell you "A Short History" is something pretty magical - it's helped to open my eyes to much in the world around me.

So why am I torn? Normally I detest Abridged books - I like books I can get deeply involved in and enjoy over a period of time. However, as with his other books, Bryson himself reads only the Abridged version of "A Short History" - and if you haven't heard him read his own material - well you really should.
