Just a sweet taste

I am not sure of the goal of this series, which includes short works by many authors in the mystery/noir genre. That said, while not the best thing Ken Bruen has ever written, this is a delightful morsel of his work. If you are already a fan; it is a lovely holdover until his next novel appears. If you are new to Mr. Bruen's work, this book will let you know if KB is for you or not. It is written in his unique style. Economical, taut, terse, mean and straight to the point. No one writes like Ken Bruen does. If you don't like this short work, don't bother with his other writing, you just won't get it.

Ken Bruen is among the very best of the writers of this genre. No doubt that he is my favorite. A new work by Ken Bruen is met by me as if I was a kid on Christmas morning. Of course, his work is much darker than that. He spares no one's feelings. His characters are very real and very much hardened by life. Don't expect any "they all lived happily ever after" type of endings. His stories remind me more of an old saying of one of my former wives, "Life sucks, then you die." But Ken Bruen makes the time before death so very interesting.

Short story - predictable

Writing style was distracting. The story line was fractured and the end was predictable. Hardly worth the 15 minute read.

Maybe I didn't understand the genre

About the time the story started to get interesting it was over. But I didn't overpay for what I got

Good story, not so good narration.

The storyline is fairly good. Different from other stuff I have read which was good. Although I found that the author stated the obvious a lot!

I didn't enjoy the narration either.

Written brilliantly , historical fact with an amazing adventure

Be transported to France in the time of the Crusades. Realise anyone with a cross was not often what they seem. An ancient relic underpins this great adventure with one person after another killed in a violent manner to get it. Our hero Luke loses his beloved wife and new born son before he realises what he has. You can smell the fires you can live the lives of Luke and his friends whilst they ensure justice. Not the law. The writing gives vivid images in a fast paced twisting and exciting journey. Don't miss this one. Steve L

If you could sum up The Jester in three words, what would they be?

I was slow to start with, but you soon get hooked and cant get enough. I found the characters and description excellent, and storey telling was fantastic. wish there were more novels like this one.

Canterbury Elizabethan Morse

This is the third book Parris' books with philosopher detective Giordano Bruno. There is a story arc in these books like in the Rebus and Bosch novels, where characters appear from other books along with some story strands. So whilst its not strictly necessary to read the books in order it does help improve the reader's enjoyment of they have read the previous books.

This book takes Bruno to Canterbury where he helps a friend discover who murdered her husband. Throw in Huguenot immigrants, small town plots, dead saints bones and a catholic threat to protestant England you've got a fast paced, well researched whodunit.!

Kennedys narration is as good as ever with lots of great voices to distinguish the large cat of characters. A very good listen. Treachery next!

More than a great who done it

I'm really enjoying this series of books and learning more about Bruno as the books go on. He's a great character. This book is a bit of a who done it but with great twists and turns that keep you guessing and discovering.

The narrator is good though his Queen Elizabeth could have been better :)

God's blood this is a good tudor romp

This is getting better and better, we are now getting villains from previous books and a fleshed out main character, I'm loving the narration, very good fake Italian accent. Really glad I got into this series. You don't need to have listened to the previous books but it will add to your enjoyment, SJ Parris is giving CJ Samson a run for his money!

Elizabethan intrigue and betrayal writ large

A novel that holds you in its thrall once you get into the plot. The characters are all believable and the cruel and primitive nature of the first Elizabethan is graphically conveyed.

The narrator adopts an appropriate pseudo Italian accent throughout. This is a little off putting at the outset but truly enhances every aspect of the story in a very positive way once you get used to its inflections.

A well crafted story that is unpredictable and holds your interest till the end.

Happy to recommend this to other readers and I'll definitely being reading more SJ Parris in the future.

Best one so far!

This one really did have me guessing and was full of suspense.

Full of the usual unpleasant characters as well as the ones you care about. A good read.

Never let an author be narrator

I've no idea whether this story is any good or the characters interesting because I couldn't put up with more than 10 minutes reading. William Sutton has a pleasant voice but there's a reason they usually employ actors to do the narration. If I'd realised it was author-read, I'd have avoided it.

Good Mystery, If You Like Historical Fiction

What did you love best about Darkness and the Devil Behind Me?

I got a free code for this in exchange for an honest review.The story was pretty good, but predictable at times. The performance was good, too, but it seemed to get better as the story went on. The first part was jerky, but I'm glad I kept listening. By chapter 2 rolled well.

Which character as performed by Marti Dumas was your favorite?

For some reason I like Mrs. Goodfellow, although the reader had a lot of good voices.

Superb narration

I love this period of history, first finding it in the faction of Shardlake. I must say that Laurence Kennedy does an absolutely superb job of giving the characters in the book a real presence. Well done.

Getting better as a series

After a slow start in the first book, this story is a lot better and the characters seem to be hitting their stride, I was doubtful whether to continue, but glad I did, if you weren't overly impressed with book one, this is better

Dull and predictable.

If you enjoy theC. J. Samson Shardlake series, you will probably be quite disappointed by this. I found it rather a chore to get through.

Superb story brilliant performance

The story as always is wonderfully crafted however it is the reader that brings it life and Lawrence does just that with his marvellous array of accents dialects and intonation. I am very sad to find that the next book is not being read by him what a great pity.

Must Read For Mystery/Historical Ficton Buffs!

A well written and informative depiction of a young women's life and trials in 1830s Zoar, Ohio- Cover Her Body was the perfect mixture of mystery and historical fiction. The main character, Adelaide, is stubborn yet likeable and the supporting characters provide an uncanny glimpse of life in a Separatist Community.

Moira Driscoll was phenomenal in her delivery. I've listened to a great deal of audio books, and her voice really stands out as one of the top notch readers.

Cover Her Body kept me entertained from start to finish! I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and enjoyable read. I am looking forward to see what's next from Eleanor Sullivan.
