Apothecary John Rawlings has been summoned to Devon by Elizabeth di Lorenzi, his beautiful but unpredictable mistress. Leaving his young daughter Rose in the good care of her grandfather Sir Gabriel Kent, Rawlings sets off for Exeter on board the stagecoach. His fellow-passengers are a motley crew, and incelude a large and talkative German lady; Cuthbert Simms, a dance-master; and Jack Beef, the so-called "Black Pyramid", a bare-knuckle fighter.
Before the journey's end a man has been found brutally murdered at the Half Moon Inn, and Rawlings is once again drawn, somewhat reluctantly, into a complex and dangerous intrigue.

A superb addition to Deryn Lake's John Rawlings series
I really enjoyed the latest John Rawlings mystery. John, his daughter Rose and his father are getting older, so this is a different John Rawlings from the earliest books. He still cannot give up his quest for adventure, and he has passed this characteristic down to little Rose. A stagecoach bound for Exeter and John's fellow passengers provide the backdrop for a murder. The tale keeps you rivited until the surprising end. I think this is Deryn Lake at her best.
    Death and the black pyramid.
I enjoyed this book. I have read the first and enjoyed them. I just wish we could get the others in the series.
    Disgusted at the plot construction
This is the first Deryn Lake book I have read, and it will be the last. The mystery in the story is so contrived as to be unbelievable. Things happen that are never explained. At the end of a mystery, I think all of the pieces should fall into place, so that every unusual thing that happened is clear. That did not happen with this story. At the end, as I thought back over the story, I kept thinking of things that happened that were not explained. They seem to have happened because the author wished to fool the reader into not being able to figure out what is happening, or simply to advance the plot. This is not how a good mystery plot should be constructed. The plot should make sense at the end, and should give a few hints so that perhaps the reader can figure out the mystery. This write did not adhere to that, and that is why is was fairly disgusted with the story when I finished.
There is a romance part of the story, but it was not interesting to me. The entire book was way, way, way too long.
Sir John Fielding makes a brief appearance. Bruce Alexander wrote a series of mysteries featuring Sir John Fielding that is very good. If you are looking for a mystery series set in the same time period, with great characters and interesting mysteries, try that series. It is so much better than the drivel in Death and the Black Pyramid.
Agatha Christie wrote a story called "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" with perhaps the greatest plot twist in all of murder mystery literature. At the end of the story, when you know who the murderer is, you can think back on the story and it all makes sense. Read that book to see how it should be done.

After almost five years of conflict, London's exhausted inhabitants are living in a world of dereliction. War-weary DI Ted Stratton is no exception, but he cannot help being drawn in by his latest case.
Called on to investigate when a doctor is found dead in Fitzrovia's Middlesex Hospital, Stratton soon realizes that someone involved is not who they appear to be. Meanwhile Jenny, Ted's wife, is working at the local Rest Centre. When a bombed-out woman appears at the centre, declaring that the man claiming to be her husband is an imposter, Jenny thinks that it must be due to shock. The reality, however, is far more dangerous....
Ultimately, for Stratton and Jenny perhaps there is only one thing they can trust: their fear.

    Great story and well read
Where does An Empty Death rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is my first Laura Wilson novel, and it won't be my last. She writes a good gripping tale, which kept me listening. Sean Barrett's narration is superb. He really brings the book and the characters to life. If only all audio books were this good to listen to.
    A very satisfying read
The book starts with the suspicious death of a doctor at Middlesex Hospital, shortly followed by the murder of a nurse, but these are rather put on the back burner as we follow the story of the murderer of a second doctor. At the same time a woman is rescued from a bombed house by DI Ted Stratton and is ultimately taken into their home by his wife Jenny. Mrs Ingram's behaviour becomes increasingly irrational and paranoid, refusing to recognise her husband, and the two storylines eventually, and terrifyingly, merge and finally, the original deaths are solved.
Laura Wilson has written well rounded characters some of which surprisingly, given the circumstances, gain one's sympathies.
In Stratton we are treated to the almost unique phenomenon in detective fiction, of a happily married man, the interplay between him and his wife being warm and affectionate.
Sean Barrett is superb in the narration, beautifully conveying Stratton's Devonian accent and those of the other characters and the book is worth listening to for this reason alone.
Not to be missed - fab !
The author takes you on a mysterious journey ? skilfully leading the reader through two distinct tales. There are very strong central characters, whose individual nature you really get a feel for. DI Ted Stratton?s dry Cockney humour shines out and on occasions; I could not help but laugh out loud. It is a story of mystery, suspense, dogged determination, human weakness & frailty. Would like to see much more of this author and narrator.
Good listen - but start with 1st in series
This was the first 'Stratton' book I listened to and whilst the books really do stand alone perfectly well, if you listen in the right sequence there is more to be gained from the character and overall plot development.
There is the odd time when the stories do get a little manic but I found my attention was captured from start to finish - helped by the, as always, excellent narration by Sean Barrett (the reason I discovered Stratton in the first place). I await the 5th Laura Wilson audible with anticipation.
    Brilliant
    I enjoyed every moment ...

    Publisher's Summary:
Summer, 1942. For the people of Malta, suffering daily bombing raids, the British are the last line of defence against the Nazis. And it is Max Chadwick's job as the information officer to ensure the news the islanders receive maintains morale. So when Max is given proof suggesting a British officer is murdering local women, he knows the consequences of discovery are dire.
With the violence on the war-ravaged island escalating daily, he embarks on a private investigation, hidden from the eyes of superiors, friends, and the woman he loves. But Max finds himself torn between patriotic duty and personal honour in his efforts to track down the killer... an elusive figure always one step ahead.
    Members Reviews:
Malta, murders, and spying during WWII
The opening of the book starts with a mystery encounter between two unnamed men in a bar implying some significant events occurring in Malta during WWII. The book then falls back to that time to reveal the story. Max Chadwick is the British information officer on the island, trying to keep up the morale and support of the locals while they are being heavily bombed by both the Germans and the Italians. To complicate matters, his friend, a British doctor, shows him a body of a "sherry queen" (dance hall girl) who has suspicious wounds and the insignia from an British officer's uniform gripped in her hand. At first torn about the discovery, he decides to dig into the mystery and finds that two other girls have died with potentially suspicious circumstances. He begins to wonder whom he can trust, and must also deal with the fallout from an affair with an officer's wife and a potential love interest with a local woman/news writer. There is also evidence of a possible German spy on the island. It is unclear if Max can put all of the pieces together before it is too late.
I do agree to a certain extent with the reviewers that commented on the author trying to cram multiple genre/storylines into one novel. At times, the romance/spy/murder mystery story lines get in each other's way. while intriguing at times, this was a much less cohesive novel than his book "The Savage Garden".
    Wonderfully entertaining!
Mark Mills has such a wonderful, atmospheric writing style. The Savage Garden made Tuscany come alive, and the Information Officer made me feel as if I was on Malta during WWII. I hate to say this is a murder mystery because its much more entertaining than that. It is also about espionage, loyalty (to people and country), and just a darn good read. THe story starts when a girl is found raped and murdered and a doctor in the local hospital brings it to his best friend's attention. His friend happens to be the British information officer on the island, and the girl was found clutching the shoulder tab belonging to a British officer on a submarine currently docked on the island and due to set off in a few days. There's also the fact that the commanding officer of the submarine is married to the woman the information officer had been having an affair with. The story twists and turns from there, sometimes quite funny, other times tragic. THe only "twist" I found to be trite is the revelation towards the end from the woman to the information officer..not to spoil the story, but its kinda silly and predictable.

Annoyed at being ignored, Tito aims the full force of his golden throat at the fourth-tier box and is astounded when the curtains part and a woman tumbles over the railing.
The victim is Zulietta Giardino, a mischievous courtesan involved with a young glassmaker. As Tito was the only one to see the masked man who pushed Zulietta to her death, the chief of Venice's rudimentary police force requests the singer's assistance. Did a wager over a rival courtesan's jewels spell Zulietta's death? Or did the motive involve sinister events in the glass factories of Murano?

    Bravo!
Rarely am I able to figure out plot twists or "who dun it" in advance of the characters. That isn't why I listen to mysteries. I like to enjoy the way the protagonist unfolds the story. I knew where this story was going before Tito did. That being said, this was still a very enjoyable listen. The castrato was particular to Venice and Italy. It took a cd before I was really comfortable with the narrator but then he was perfect. This is an interesting walk on the unusual side of normal. I've bought more of Tito's adventures so yes, despite the tone, this is a very positive review!
    Interesting but Not Great
I got this book because I am fond of Opera and am familiar with Baroque Opera and the age of the Castrato.
In one sense it lived up to my expectations with lots of details about goings-on in the opera house as the various castrati vie for leading roles.
The mystery was quite inriguing and of course since it took place in the opera house led to a lot of details about Opera of the period. It was a plot full of novel twists and turns and certainly the ending was quite unexpected. It is very well-plotted and the suspense held your interest.
However, it sagged a bit in the middle and I think this is due to the presence of the female character Leah and her family in the Jewish Ghetto. I really found that part of the book dull and uninteresting and while it was well integrated into the plot I think it took up far too much time. I had little interest in Leah and the little boy -- I don't really go for mystery books that have a family involvement like this. I find they tend to drag as the writer takes time from the mystery to go into details about the family. I really prefer my detective to be unencumbered with a family as it become too distracting.
I think the presence of Leah and the importance the author attaches to her will prevent me from reading anymore books in the series. However if you like the family as part of a mystery this should appeal to you. However, I found Leah rather whiny as too often females in detective fiction can be and her interest in Tarot cards and foretelling I found a bit overdone.
The narrator was excellence and did and outstanding job of having different and suitable voices for ll the characters.
Once again a riveting mystery from this quickly becoming my favourite author!
Tito Amado once again draws us into the world of Venice of times past to unravel another mysterious death. Good pace and characterisations. The historical information vivid and the plots meaty and satisfying.

    Another Good Book
All in all, another good book. An enjoyable and satisfying story. The attention to detail of the lives, the languages, the food, the cities and the countries fascinate me. However, the ending was a little abrupt for me. I would like to know more of the finer details to wrap up the story. But then again, most books leave out the details I would like to know at the ending. Nevertheless I expect another book to follow to tidy up a few items I am still curious about.

    A Disappointment
I had hoped for another series where I could get to know some characters well and follow them through several books. I can barely make it through a quarter of this one. The plot is slow and plodding, I haven't yet found a character worth investing in, and the narrator is killing it with all her variations on the cliche accent of a Western hayseed. I refuse to waste any more time with it. Buyer beware!
Fun Adventure of the old west.
Where does Judith and the Judge rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Stephen Bly is my favorite author. I love the humor and surprises in his books. I have read this trilogoy several times. Each time is a pleasant visit with old friends.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Judith and the Judge?
Judith and the Judge's visit to Lake Tahoe.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
These are books that are enjoyable in one sitting or many.

Hector Lassiter is a gutsy crime writer who believes in the "write what you live and live what you write" mantra. Then Hector learns of another artist who follows this method - Âa serial killer who takes inspiration from art, leaving his victims in bloody vignettes of surrealist paintings. When a woman Hector knows becomes the latest work of art, he vows to stop the sadistic artist.
    Critic Reviews:
"As a popular author, Lassiter interacts with such notables as Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles, whom the author skillfully animates. Other celebrities of the day make cameo appearances. Solidly grounded in such actual events as the Key West hurricane of 1935, the Spanish Civil War and Cuba's last days before Castro, McDonald's imaginative tale takes an enjoyably different approach to art and murder." (Publishers Weekly)
"This time Hec is palling with Hemingway in Key West and preparing for what proves to be the devastating 1935 hurricane. A young woman there is disemboweled, and her torso is stuffed with machine parts. Hec immediately connects the murder to surrealist art and journeys to the battlefront of the Spanish civil war, Hollywood, and Cuba in search of the artistic murderer. Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth, Salvador Dalí, and John Dos Passos all turn up in juicy cameos, and the details on the hurricane, the Spanish war, and surrealism are the product of careful research." Loved It
Another in Craig McDonald's Hector Lassiter series( nine books with the tenth and final one soon to come). They are crime thrillers, historical fiction, literary fiction, and art and literary history all rolled up into one fantastically entertaining book. The novels, taken together, represent a cross section of the history of the United States, film , art, and literature, high and low, of the 20th century. I can't really describe these books but if you trust anything I say, give them a chance. You will thank me.
    Not for the squeamish
Apparently I am able to read something as dark and cold-blooded as this, and keep it in a section of my mind that reminds me it is fiction. However, this book is interspersed with historical facts, and enough truth that it may not be a stretch to imagine the events may be more real that I want to think about.
I liked how deeply the author researched, and wove actual events of the era into the life of Hector Lassiter. I was fascinated to learn more of the events and people involved, but I have further developed my distaste of surrealism.
As another reviewer has noted, I don't want to do any spoilers, because it would ruin the anticipation the reader gets caught up in the story, waiting to see if they are a step ahead of Lassiter, or if they have been duped into another surprise twist.
If graphic, violent details upset you, or sex scenes and bad language offend you, then this is not the book for you. But if you are able to accept those things as necessary elements of a very well crafted story, this book may become one you will re-read over the years, always finding something else that is thought provoking.
A Great Thriller That's As Hard As It Gets....
While it does struggle juggling too many balls at the same time, this is a strong thriller featuring a number of real-life personages (and I am a big fan of mysteries/thrillers that involve real people).

    Great Mystery Series
I really enjoy Ann Parker's Silver Rush mysteries. This is number 3. I am probably able to appreciate it more than those who haven't read the first two, but I still think this book stands up on it's own. Saloon owner, Inez Stannert, is a wonderful character, especially to those of us (of a certain age) who remember Miss Kitty from the old Gunsmoke TV series. Parker always seems to come up with new and interesting characters. In this book Zelda stands out as a woman of determination who goes so far as to prostitute herself for the good of her family.
The narrator of this Audible book did a good job of bringing the story and characters to life.

A prophet by reputation, the man possesses key information that could guarantee British victory, and he goes by the name of Greenmantle.

From Germany to Russia and Constantinople, the detectives travel far and wide and encounter some of the greatest literary characters of our time, not least of which is Hilda Von Einem, the evil yet breathtakingly beautiful temptress.
Having been inspired by his own experiences whilst serving in the British army, John Buchan had great success with the Richard Hannay series, which was considered to have the perfect balance between a plausible yet entertaining story.
As well as a celebrated author, Buchan was also a published historian, editor, war correspondent, lawyer, government administrator, MP and director of a publishing house. Clearly an ambitious and intelligent man, his wit, imagination and acumen are easy to detect in the thrilling adventure that is Greenmantle, and we hope that it is enjoyed for many years to come.

    Not the 39 Steps
I picked this up because Christopher Hitchens references it several times in "Arguably" and I don't have anybody who's recommendations I trust more.
I have enjoyed other works by Buchan and this is also an enjoyable listen. You have to be willing and able to filter through the language and attitudes of a bygone era but in truth they are why it is important that works like this continue to be read. Buchan's stereotypes are all here from questionable "foreigners" to superhuman Scotsmen and crass Americans.
The story is interesting and the moral simplicity of the situations makes it easy for the action to keep rolling along. You know how its going to end before it ever begins and you know who the bad guys are even before they take up their place in the story.
Its Boys Own stuff but good fun for all that. Not as tightly written as "The 39 Steps" but still enjoyable.
I chose this version among many because I usually enjoy Christian Rhodska's narrations. I have to say this is definitely not among his best. The characterisations are occasionally clumsy and often intrusive. One of the characters in particular ended up making me wince every time he spoke.

So Fascinating Now I Have to Research It
I am of the generation alive when the movie came out of which this novel is concerning. I knew the author was Edna Ferber but until I listened to some of her audiobooks I had no idea what a truly wonderful writer she is or should we say "was," though once a wonderful writer always a wonderful writer even after dead. Now I am angry at having to read what was alleged to be women's literature in my high school and college classes. Researching now I find so many more worthy women writers in the past than those given out as good, Edna Ferber being the first on the list. Hollywood trivialized her and academia ignored her.
I have to find out who Edward Ifkovic is and what factual basis there is, if any, in this interesting book. I will start by reading any other reviews here. A great performance and a "feminist" viewpoint that could well be that of Edna Ferber. I recommend more Edna Ferber audiobooks, although so many are now in the public domain. "Gigolo" is free in a Kindle edition.
    Very Moving
Being from Fairmount, IN myself, the book was more personal to me than to most. I felt Jimmy's pain, his little boy lost feelings. The book was well written and tells us what Jimmy was going through in his last days...unfortunatley more of what he always went through.
    uninteresting
I could not get interested in the characters or the story.
