A good read, but the social charm of this is a bit out dated.

I originally read this book in the 8th grade which was before Magic Johnson was diagnosed with AIDS. It is a good coming of age book, but it is written from a mid-80's point of view on homosexuality and aids, which at this point is a bit out-dated. This is a good read, but it has lost a bit of charm having been 30 years since it's composition.

Well-written, serious teen drama

This is a serious teen drama novel that weaves the very serious issues of hiv and sexual orientation in with a realistic quiltwork of the more typical issues that contribute to teen angst.

Erick is the main character of the book, and it seems like there is no end to his troubles. His perfect big brother, Pete, comes out of the closet as a gay man and then reveals that he's tested HIV positive. This horrifies his straight-laced and traditional parents, who are simultaneously disturbed by their son's sexuality and horrified at the disease that he faces.

In the meantime, Erick has other problems. His relationships with his girlfriend Dill and his best friend Jack are threatened when he and Jack's girlfriend, Nicki, develop romantic feelings for each other. Nicki is an strong, loner character who hides a secret vulnerability behind an aggressive brassiness and sexuality.

On the one hand, this book's plot seems like an after-school special tailor-made to deal with the issues that teens face. On the other hand, M.E. Kerr brings a strong, professional touch to the writing, and the characters are deeper and more realistic than you would find in a made-for-TV deal.

I think that the love triangle and the realism might make this an entertaining read that will be more digestible than a straight story about the more serious stuff would be.

Erick finally learns the true meaning of family being first.

Amazing

This story blew me away. Imagine a rich young girl who has to become deadly and cutthroat in order to protect her family. I loved how the heroine fought her way through difficulties and became a stronger person in the end. I really enjoyed the author's writing style.

Not My Type Book

The first 6 chapters were trash. I skipped to middle chapter...still trash. I skipped to the last two chapters....trash! If you like the F word and sex book, this is for you.

Good book

This book is embarrassing

I tried reading this book but really only got three chapters in before I removed it from my Kindle. As a former teenaged girl, I must say that the narrative was completely absurd. No female adolescent talks like Forrester's protagonist. The frequent usage of female-oriented slurs was also too distracting. Sure, girls can be cruel in high school but no one is referring to each other as a "little slut". Those are the kinds of words misogynists say to women who have had the misfortune of crossing their path. I think this author should try to avoiding from the perspective so obviously unknown to him in the future. Being a sixteen year old girl is hard enough as it is without having men presuming to know what it's like.

If you are looking to read good books about this age group, I recommend the Private series by Kate Brian.

Like nothing I have ever read

The prep school scene and Martha's Vineyard references reminded me of Gossip Girl but it had mystery, murder and intrigue. I hope there is a sequel because there are some unanswered questions.

Where does Phantom's Dance rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Overall highly on my list.

What about Kai Kennicotts performance did you like?

At the beginning there were a few moments where the narrator seemed muffled and hard to hear. But after the first chapter all was well. She did a lovely job with different voices to distinguish different characters. She had a young girl sound to her voice, it felt as if I was listening to Christine talk. She did a wonderful job of narrating the story and not distracting from it, but enhancing it.

Absolutely! I know some people who would prefer to listen and some who would prefer to read. Either way the story is fantastic. I prefer audio and was very excited to get to listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Phantom's Dance?

Every scene surrounding Erik. I really like him and his relationship with Christine.

Which character as performed by Kai Kennicott was your favorite?

Christine! I loved her voice when I read this but somehow Kai Kennicott was able to add in an extra depth that I didn't achieve when reading the book.

There were just a few minor hiccups. The audio seemed to echo in some places. Other than that this was fabulous!

I'd recommend it to all audiobook fans!

So did I love the audiobook of Phantom's Dance? Of course I did! I'd recommend it to all audiobook fans, whether or not you have read the book before. I enjoyed it immensely and am even more in love with this dark Phantom of the Opera retelling

I would listen to it again because at moments it was thrilling, sweet, scary and funny. That makes a great (audio) book!

Hidden gem!

I haven't read the print version so I can't really answer that.

I can't really think of one to compare it with. It's really unique and I haven't read anything like it.

No. But I would love to listen to more books narrated by her. I feel Krause's performance really brought something special to the story. Her accents and voices were perfect. I was never confused about who was speaking.

Yes. At the end when we find out what's to come of Mark and Allison was really heartfelt and endearing.

Ms. Rose tells a good story in My Dead Boyfriend. It's a little mystery and little paranormal mixed together. The balance of 'real world' and 'fairy world' is nice.

beautiful and well written romance novel for teens

Sometimes you find a teenage book that doesn't talked down to you or shows all the bad choices you can make. Sometimes you do find true and honest love as a teenager. Sometimes life is carefree and amazing and there is no need to make life harder. This is a story of how a girl can just decide to give in to love and not make things more complicated than life needs to be.

This book was a wonderful read. It is a YA (teen) romance novel.

Eliana's father is deployed and she has to move to Oregon with her mother to the small town that both her parents grew up in. She must trade the sun, beach, and clubs of southern California for the cold, wet weather and bowling alley of Oregon.

I wish more teenagers could be more like Eliana, strong, confident, and she truely knows who she is and will not change that to please anyone. She knows whats right and she she has morals.

I loved the relationship she has with her mother and grandfather. I also liked the relationship she has with her new friend. She never tried to come between her and her old friends (even if they make her life hell).

I do have some unanswered questions, but I hope the sequel will sort them out.

Cute Plot, Not the Best Writing

I read this book because all of the reviews were so positive (and it was free!). I had high hopes for it, but ended up being a little disappointed. The writing style was juvenile and choppy, which had a tendency to bug me. I found at least two spelling/grammatical errors that shouldn't have made it past an editor (your curiosity is "piqued", and you eat dessert, not desert). The story just really has no climax or big resolution. It just saunters on, all butterflies and rainbows, and it would have been nice to have a little action along the way. And really, she never once thinks about the fact that Lucas is the son of her dad's former best friend? I know there's a sequel, but something has to happen that really gets the book going. Overall, it was a cute, quick read, but I doubt I'd cough up any money for the sequel.

Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer

A very fun read! The protagonist, Eliana Davis, epitomizes the melodramatic teenage years that we have all lived through. She worries about what the other students in her new school think of her, she spends hours searching for the perfect dress for prom, and she obsesses over the cute boy on the baseball team.

What sets this book apart from other coming of age stories (and a main reason that I was so enthralled), is the way Sarah Schofield translates Eliana into a relatable role model for young women. She balances responsibility with extracurricular activities, resists sinking to a bully's level, and engages her elderly "gramps."

In many ways she is a new age feminist - she doesn't let guys make decisions for her, but she isn't afraid to be beautiful and delicate when she dances. I particularly related to and enjoyed the open and trusting relationship she shared with her mother.

an intense novel

Manny is a popular football player with a pretty girl on his arms. Life is good, despite some friction between him and his friends. Heâs young, parties, and oftentimes drinks. One night he and his friends trespass on mountain territory to party, and soon after a huge fire blazes endangering his entire community. He did put out the campfire, didnât he? He thought he had since he was the last person who left the cave, but then again he was drunk and perhaps he hadnât.

While the fire gets out of control, Manny is reminded of an incident that happened years ago when he was a child. He had accidentally created another fire, one that injured and killed the people of his town. One girl, Abby, who was affected became a burn victim. Just like Scrooge had, Manny meets three ghosts of the past, present, and future who prompt him to do the right thing with Abby, her father, and those involved in the current tragedy.

This was an intense story about guilt, redemption, and responsibility. Manny is selfish and inconsiderateâwith his soul and demeanor near rock bottom, thereâs no way to go but up. The novel covers many emotions with all the anguish the characters go through, but there are also feel-good moments as well. It reads fast and I finished it in a day.

A Book to Fire Up Your Imagination

An easy read with nothing that makes it stand out

What I Loved

1. Brooklyn, our main character, is an aspiring fashion designer. She's dedicated, smart and determined to make it into a good fashion school to follow her dreams.

2. The love interest, Grayson, is actually a great guy. He takes care of his baby brother, volunteers and sticks around for all of Brooklyn's indecisiveness.

3. I thought this was going to be a case of insta-love, and while there was some pretty unrealistic attraction in the beginning, the romance actually played out pretty slowly.

What Bugged Me

1. There's nothing about this book that stands out. It's a pretty straightforward girl sees boy again after a long period of time apart, boy used to be a giant jerk to her but now he loves her. Wow, talk about a run-on sentence. I kept reading it expecting something to happen, but at 90% in I realized, this was it. There's not really any big conflict that drives the book forward. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of smaller things, but nothing that kept me hanging to see what happened. I pretty much already knew the ending before it happened.

2. The writing style. It's not bad, but the writing is kind of stilted. Conversations don't flow naturally, and there are some spelling/editing errors. A lot of what bugged me is the "show vs. tell" problem. A lot of the issues in the book that could have been demonstrated through the actions of the characters were just told to you. And that makes for a pretty dry book to read.

3. The conflicts in the story that Brooklyn addresses are repeated almost word for word throughout the story. Family drama makes up most of it, and you can predict the conversation before it happens. Also, a bigger opportunity for some action later in the book is kind of dropped in with no follow up.

4. Brooklyn is the most indecisive, wishy washy character ever.

Excellent Story Connecting Nature to Young Love

The Boy from the Woods by Jen Minkman is a story about love, forgiveness, friendship, and natural forces. The story centers on Julia and her friends who just graduated from high school in Europe. Like many young innocent girls, she succumbs to the charms of her high school crush, Michael, who dumps her the following day after taking her virginity. Several weeks afterwards, Julia accidently runs into him and he insults her and treats her like a stranger.

Up until this time Julia spent much of her free time daydreaming and writing songs (about Michael) in the forest behind her home. Shortly after Michaels heartbreaking insults, she discovers Michael at the foot of her favorite oak tree unconscious and bleeding from a bad motorcycle accident. When he opens his eyes, he speaks her name almost reverently, and its as if he is a totally different person.

I really enjoyed the exploration into Celtic Druidism the spiritual connection to nature. Many call this connection our sixth sense. Its easy to adopt this philosophy and believe in the pulse of nature and the circle of life. The Boy from the Woods really demonstrates how everything in life is interconnected and dependent on each other.

I listened to the Audible version of this story. Despite a few obvious page turning noises, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. I loved it so much that I couldnt stop listening after driving home from work one day. So, I went on a long walk in the woods by my house -- to finish it. Great job!

Author Jen Minkman has really outdone herself with this story. It really captures Jen's imagination and it shows her love for writing a great story. This story has everything you want in a story. Jen captures everything like love, nature, heartache, joy, and the mystical connection of nature. Jen has written a beautiful story that keeps you wondering and guessing from start to finish. I love all of the author's stories but this one touches you in such a way that you'll never forget this story. I believe that's what a great story should do. I don't care if you're not a fan of YA, once you read/listen to this one you'll change your mind.

Narrator Charli Lynn Koppel did a fantastic job with the telling of this story and I was immersed from the start. I even cried so much that I didn't know if I was ever going to stop. A wonderful story and a fantastic performance by the narrator.

I enjoyable this audobook and the characters are authentic, but the writing style took a little getting used to. Once I got into it though, the story moved along to a satisfying conclusion .
