FIRST BINGE READ IN YEARS

Stefan is my hero. His reading (and, of course, Garrido's writing) kept me enthralled. My only minor gripe is that the ending wasn't as "schmaltzy" as I would have liked

Very good book

I loved this book. Interesting characters, held my interest, had a hard time putting it down. Historically interesting. I had no idea of Americans going to Russia during the depression. I recommend this book.

Excellent book about a part of WWll I was not familiar with.

Night Witches: A Novel of World War Two ...

love this series.

Novel about remarkable women

The 588 bomber group of the Red Air Force in WWII consisted of women â commander, pilots, navigators, mechanics â all women. They flew Po 2 biplanes, called âmulesâ and âcrop dustersâ by other pilots. These planes flew slower than the stall speed of the Bf108 and the FW190 fighters, which made them devilishly difficult to shoot down. They flew at night. They would cut engines and glide to their target, drop bombs, then speed off. Since there was silence before the bomb blast, the Germans called them âNight Witchesâ and claimed they flew on broomsticks. 24 of the Night Witches were named Heroes of the Soviet Union.

This book is of the genre of Young Adult Fiction. Its intended audience is teen-age girls. It is about the coming of age of a young Russian woman who becomes a Night Witch. There is little drama or suspense and no sex. The book is ably written and is an enjoyable read. It tells a little about the Night Witches, hardly more than is in the Wikipedia article.

I received an arc from the publisher for review consideration (thanks Scholastic!) this in no way affected my review, cross my heart.

I grew up on Lasky's books, her's are among the ones that that I've had since childhood, a bit bent and a little tattered from being read over and over again. I haven't picked up a book of her's in a while, I don't reread that much anymore and I've pretty much moved away from middle grade, the genre she predominates. Nevertheless, when the opportunity to review her upcoming novel came along, I immediately jumped at the chance. Reading Night Witches was a bit like revisiting my childhood, so if I start getting terribly nostalgic, oops.

As I remembered, Kathryn Lasky's writing is clear and precise, a great style for younger readers. Night Witches is in a bit of a weird spot between MG and YA. I ended up categorizing it as YA because some of the language used (ie.

A Memoir Worth Reading

Creative, intelligent, thought-provoking, and timely in respect to the recent announcement by Ringling Brothers that they were suspending operations this year.

A lyrical, poignant story of exile, family, and life under Communism

A lyrical, poignant story of exile, family, and life under Communism, told from the perspective of three generations of a polar bear family. Uniquely conceived and beautifully translated, it's definitely one of the best books of 2016.

Not without flaws, but still an offbeat and unexpectedly powerful book

I have a weak spot for quirky literature -- something that dares to defy genres and give the reader something to think about. And when I discovered "Memoirs of a Polar Bear," I was enchanted by its premise. Three generations of intelligent polar bears recording their memories? Such a premise could have been ridiculous in the wrong hands, but I was curious enough to read despite this possibility. And while this book can get confusing at points, and some of its worldbuilding just leads to plot holes and further questions, it's a unique and beautiful novel that I'm very glad to have given a chance.

"Memoirs of a Polar Bear" follows three generations of polar bears as they struggle to find their place among humanity, and as their personal struggles mirror the ongoing turmoil of East Germany during the Cold War. The first part of the book covers a nameless ursine protagonist who grew up in a Russian circus, and after accidentally writing a bestselling memoir must flee first to Germany, then to Canada for her own protection. The second part follows her daughter Tosca, a ballet dancer who joins a German circus after her ballet career is engulfed in controversy. Her story is related by Barbara, an animal trainer who seeks to plot the perfect act for Tosca even as she writes the bear's biography... and finds herself developing a powerful link with the white bear. The third and final part of the book follows Tosca's son Knut, who grows up in a German zoo and is bemused by the controversy surrounding his very existence... and who forms a curious, possibly-supernatural friendship with a human entertainer with his own troubled past.

This book almost reads like three separate novellas by the same author, with slight revisions added later in order to connect them better.

I'm not sure if people who are not already Shakespeare fans would get as much out of this as those who already are. But for this Shakespeare reader, it was hilarious. The author has done a good job combining lines from a variety of Shakespeare's plays into a well spun, this is how it could have been, story.

great series cannot wait for the next one. The Life and Times of the Old ways

pretty good sequel.

I like the character development throughout the story. hraban is a strong lead. battles could be better done but not bad at all. I don't much care for the narrator. The monotone in his words makes the story harder to follow as you don't hear the excitement or sorrow. The writing itself is well done although the political atmosphere more deeply explained would take the story up a notch

Very good

An overall good read that is worthy to be on my re read list.

*spoiler alert*

My only dissatisfaction was the fact that H did not make it clear to h that he regretted past liaisons; and amazingly h never asked... I couldn't understand they it was never discussed. That part was just glazed over...

Nevertheless I highly recommend this audible book.

Not too much nor too little

As is predictable with S Laurens, the characters are well rounded with believable substance. They follow the pattern of a great romance but the curves issues are realistic made my heart ache for both sides and to want to knock their heads together too.

I will be listening to the story again, which for me is the best way to know it's excellent listening and therefore money well spent.

Thanks awfully Ms L. You helped an impatient patient lose herself during treatment time in a positive way.

Isabel Allende is a superior story teller. She takes you to a foreign land, walks you through the landscape and characters in such a way that you believe you are part of the plot.

What a beautiful and familiar story...

Chock full of elements that we can all relate to. Definitely a "tale as old as time" and representative of the human condition.

One more fabulous novel by Isabel Allende.

Fluid, insightful, and memorable story.
