What a Super Ego

Not that I don't recognize the man's contributions, but I thought it was "good riddance Freud" once I graduated. He was such an argumentative dour fellow that never could play well with his colleagues. When I saw the title of this book I wondered... "what kind of woman would stir the passions of the (oft called) -- misogynist father of psychoanalysis?"....in light of his unflattering opinions and theories on my females, "how could he carry on a whole affair, knowing that SHE lie next to him at night, envying his penis, dreaming of cigars, snakes, and her daddy?"

Authors, Mack -- a former attorney and Golden Globe winning Producer, and Kaufman -- former staff writer for the LA Times, gave a convincing and enticing reason for setting aside personal views of Freud and choosing this book.

Worst Narrator EVER!

What disappointed you about Upon a Midnight Dream?

The narrator was just horrible. It's like he's mocking the genre. Over exaggerating the speech of the characters. I've been reading the series on my Kindle but when I saw that this one was on audible I wanted to listen to it. I couldn't get into the story because of this narrator. I'm going back to my Kindle.

The Narration Slaughtered It!

I wish the narration would have been as good as the story itself. It was hard to finish, not because of the plot or characters but the narrator was painful to listen to. I wish I had read the other reviews before purchasing. I would have stopped at the Kindle version and not added the audible.

Awful performance

I don't really know if the story is that bad or not. The performance was so terrible I could not finish it.

Winnie the Pooh narrating?

This book does have charm and wit but the voice of Winnie the Pooh mixed with Piglet just ruined it for me...the laughs were the worst. Despite that the narration reminds me of a cartoon it is an okay book but not one that I'd choose again

great story

First time author for me. My wife and I listened to this together and both thought it was great. It was well crafted in how the author went back and forth from Garmisch, Germany during the war to present day El Paso, TX and sometimes in between, telling the story of the different characters at the different times. There were parallels during the different times but an overriding there was forgiveness and forgiving oneself. It was a very touching story and I recommend it highly. I read one review as I started the book where the reviewer commented that World War II themes were getting worn out and I disagree with that statement. There were so many different aspects to that war, the different stories that can come out of that dreadful event will likely never stop. Enjoy

Two intertwining stories

What did you like best about this story?

I liked Elsie's story much better than Reba's; I couldn't understand Reba's motivations, but Elsie's progression was natural.

Any additional comments?

I do agree with one reviewer that Reba as a character was really self-involved, and I couldn't understand why Ricky would put up with her. I loved Elsie as a character, because she cut through all the crap and got right down to business.

Elisabeth Rodgers was a good narrator, though I found her German pronunciation was clunky in places.

This is a worthwhile read, intertwining, bittersweet, and well-done.

Another Good Tale

A good story line with the Naval interwoven with the personal fir both our heroes. Should have been entitled Aubrey Does It Again !

I love this series the characters are so well rounded and believable. I have listened so often I can now only hear Aubrey and Maturin read by Ric Jerrom. I have read the series and listened to it at least 3 times and I wish that he could finish the series. Recommended listening.

I usually don't write reviews, but had to for Palisades Park. I feel Alan Brennert is a wonderful writer and he writes meaningful fiction with non fiction mixed in. I learn so much from each book. It was the same with Palisades Park. I could see the Park when traveling in a car by the Hudson River and know I went there at least once. After listening to this book, I was sorry that I couldn't go there right now one more time. He makes the story and characters so real that I could connect with each one. Besides the writing, the narration was wonderful and fit the book perfectly. I loved listening to it, and am sorry it is over.

Brennert does characters best

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. This book was an incredible addition to the genre of historical fiction set against the backdrop of an amusement park. I will definitely think twice about amusement park workers - even though the days of self-made men and women and amusement parks are over. Brennert does a wonderful job of describing his characters, and while I couldn't agree with all action of characters, I could understand why they did what they did, which sometimes if half the battle.

The narrator was quite good for this book, though in parts read a little too slowly for my liking. His dialogue was very good. The book itself was well-written and imaginative.... I always look forward to Mr. brennert's books and was thrilled when this one came out. If you have never read a Brennert book, you will not receive a fast-action plot, but a character-driven growth and buildup with true historical figures sprinkled in realistically.

A good story, terrible narration!

Where does The Plum Tree rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I appreciated the story. However the narration was incredibly distracting. I felt like I was listening to announcements being shouted over an intercom. A few of the voices sounded off as well. The story was good enough for me to push through and finish listening, but I wish I would have bought the ebook instead.

How could the performance have been better?

A different voice used for the narration would have made it much better.

Wonderful Story Ruined by the WORST Narrator!

I listened to this while wincing. The narrator does an excellent job of destroying the weight of the story. It is a good story - maybe even an excellent story - but the narration is not to be born.

I enjoy Audible Books because I can accomplish other tasks while listening... this narrator is pushing me to the bookstore to READ the book. It is as bad theatrical act.

The STORY is EXCELLENT! A good read, not listen.

More Of The Same, But The Same Is Good

What did you love best about The Strangled Queen?

That everything that was solid in The Iron King continued to be solid here. It has the same tone, characterization, prose style, etc. Going from that book to this one is less like ending a novel and more like ending a chapter then flipping the page.

Thus, if you liked everything about the first book, as I did, you'll like everything about the second book.

As far as this specific book is concerned, I liked how it drove home how very second-rate Louis the Hutin's court is compared to the way Phillip The Fair ran things. Phillip could be cruel, but Louis is just as cruel and much more bumbling.

What about Peter Joyces performance did you like?

That it's every bit as good as it was in the first book. Peter Joyce is an excellent reader.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several. Druon turns in good moments here like he did the first book. Robert's meetings with Marguerite stand out, as well as one doomed character's musings on how we create our own downfalls.

Any additional comments?

It occurred to me while I was listening to this that the worldview expressed here is very much similar to that of François de La Rochefoucauld's famous maxims. I wouldn't be surprised if Druon read a couple pages each day before sitting down to his typewriter.

Just can't get into these books.

I don't know what it is about these books, but I just can't get into them. I gave it two full books, one and two in the series, but I'm now moving on to something else. I've been reading with WhisperSync going between the Kindle and Audible books. The narrator is good, the story is ok, but there's just something about them that make it hard to keep my attention. I'm probably the minority in this aspect, I relize that. Can't say I didn't try to like them though, two full books finished.

Stunning Southern Historical Fiction...Damn Bess!

A mix of sorrow and joy, the Whistling Woman is a tale of growing up in North Carolina in a large family, with Cherokee roots, plenty of folk lore, fierce love and loyalty, and a daddy who is the constable. Bessie is the oldest and she butts heads plenty . . . she has a mind of her own . . . and that's just fine with her daddy . . . most of the time. I'm very familiar with the country sayings in the book, such as "fixin' to" . . . in Kentucky, where I grew up, we're always "fixin' to" do something, too . . . The narration is a delight. The entire story is honest, gritty, sweet, sad and rings absolutely true. Can't wait to listen to the sequel, Moonfixer.

Fascinating Glimpse of History

I loved this book. In fact, I immediately bought the next two in the series. The intimate first-person narrative is a deeply touching and realistic portrait of the times and of families as they are in all times. The narrator was perfect for this book. C. C. Tillery is now a new Favorite Author for me. Anyone who enjoys stories centered on people and relationships,...you should read or hear this one!

Pure Joy

I loved this story! It was full of nostalgia, real life experiences, and mountain wisdom and whit. It made me wish to know these people and to be a part of this time period in Hot Springs. since I cannot do that, I did bake some hot biscuits for my family. I guess that's a close second.

SIMPLY AWFUL.

Struggled to listen any further. Dreary voice of narrator. Story disturbing and not what I can get into.

Has always been a great story.

Would you consider the audio edition of Shadow of the Moon to be better than the print version?

Not necessarily. Have owned a printed copy for nearly 30 years and have always enjoyed reading it, when time permitted. In the last few years I have come to appreciate the portability of audio books, and the luxury to listen while engaged in other tasks not condusive to holding a book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tara Ochs?

Vikas Adams who is the narrator of The Far Pavilions. His voice and characterizations were spot on for the story. He brought all of it to life.

Tara Ochs has a good voice for nonfiction, but is far too bland for performing.

If possible redo the narration for this story and get Vikas Adams to it.

Wonderful story

What made the experience of listening to Shadow of the Moon the most enjoyable?

This book is a long-time favorite. Even though I've read it multiple times, listening to an audio version makes any book new again.

What aspect of Tara Ochss performance would you have changed?

I was disappointed by her mispronunciation of words (vehemence and desultory are two examples) as well as inconsistent British accents for the same characters. Shame on the director and producer for allowing it too.

Hated to. have the story end

Not sure which story was better written - Shadow of the Moon. or Far Pavilion. And the narration was fantaztic.

No. While the storyline was very acceptable and interesting the length of the book was not.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The book 34 hours long, excessively descriptive and the story could have been told in half the time without all the adjectives and introspection.

I am not sure if the story was based on fact, but if so it was well researched and I would read another of her books f it was shorter.

Wonderful story & narration

I read the many great reviews on the goodreads app and agree with them all. There are some naysayers. But I have to say that not only did I enjoy the book, but I felt as if I actually know Ms. Austen. I believe that was because the author seemed to capture her spirit and the narrator did an amazing job of bringing the writing to life.

A Skillfully Woven, Compelling Tale!

Syrie James skillfully interweaves historical details of Jane Austen's life, aspects of her wit & wisdom, character & convictions, and details of her writings to create a most intriguing unveiling of her one "true love" -- cherished by Austen, but kept secret out of necessity. James most cleverly crafts a plot in which the events (revealed by this lost memoir) serve to inspire Austen to make key plot changes to several of her novels (as we now know & adore them) as she experiences deep emotional turmoil as well as intense joy and passion.

Stina Nielsen is a masterful narrator who beautifully manifests the voices of quite a few diverse characters. I lost myself in the storyline as I listened to the audio book because Nielsen so adeptly brings each character to life. To feel like I'm listening to an a conversation that actually could have taken place by or near Jane Austen is phenomenal!

Should be a screenplay!

I truly enjoyed this book and the narrator's performance. It would have been a better version of "Becoming Jane" for me. Thank you, Syrie!

I loved this book. It felt so real. I want to read The Lost Manuscript of Jane Austen next.

Prepare to weep...

This was a remarkable book, excellent narration, and so many thoughts going through my mind...

I believe that these manuscripts were found. I believe they are Jane Austens. I was so excited to hear the first chapter on how they came to be and was so upset on the last chapter, about information that upset regarding Jane Austen. If I told you it would be a spoiler and I hate that.

I recommend this book so highly I wished there had been more memoirs found by her. 5 plus
