Abby Lovitt doesn't realize how unprepared she is when she takes her beloved horse, True Blue, to a clinic led by the most famous equestrian anyone knows. The biggest surprise, though, is that Sophia, the girl who never makes a mistake, suddenly makes so many that she stops riding. Who will ride her horse?
Abby's dad seems to think it will be Abby. Pie in the Sky is the most expensive horse Abby has ever ridden. But he is proud and irritable, and he takes Abby's attention away from the continuing mystery that is True Blue. And then there's high school - Abby finds new friends but also new challenges, and a larger world that sometimes seems strange and intimidating. She begins to wonder if there is another way to look at horses, people, and life itself.
Accompanied by the beautiful imagery of 1960s Northern California, Abby's charming mix of innocence and wisdom guide us through Pulitzer Prize-winner Jane Smiley's latest middle-grade horse novel.
Members Reviews:
Just read it! (Plus a grumble about amazon.)
It's a wonderful story, well written, heartwarming, great characters. What else can I say? Amazon used to let us give stars without having to write a review and that was good because it helped to steer the site toward good recommendations. I wish they'd go back to that. If I gave a review to every book I liked (especially catching up from the time the 'no review' option disappeared), I'd probably never catch up. And I don't write negative reviews. Enough other people do that.
A wonderful book for teenagers and adults
I don't give a book 5 stars very often, however, I love this series. A great description of a very different life in the 60s. I can honestly say that I learn a lot about horses. Within the story it gives ideas about how to understand horses, describes training methods, teaches about their nature, and more. And all that within an easy read. In addition I really like, that the main character is not a heroin, but a very hard trying and loveable girl.
Fourth in a series of fun YA reads...
Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize winner for her retelling of Shakespeare's _King Lear_, has successfully created a series of fun reads, mostly targeting middle school girls who are interested in horses. I teach English in a college preparatory school and am always looking for fun reads for students. Realistic problems, strong problem-solving protagonist, quality writing.
Five Stars
I enjoyed reading this five book series. I'd recommend reading them in sequence. This is book number 4.
Horse book series.
I purchased the whole series of these horse books for my 9 year old great granddaughter and also for 12 year old friend. They were overwhelmed with joy. Both avid readers. I do not give children toys, just books from the time they are born.
