Not the unabridged book at all!

What would have made A Culture of Honor better?

The book itself is great, but this recording is actually a teaching relating to the book. I bought the book for my Kindle and got this audible book to continue my "reading" while I was busy. I was very disappointed to find out it was not the book at all!

If you are hoping to get a narration of the book Culture of Honor, don't buy this. It is a teaching about the book, not the unabridged book as it says.

Went to Kindle, bought the book

I enjoyed the sermon, enough to go to Kindle to buy the book. (This is what I thought I was buying at AUDIBLE) The teaching is very thought provoking... but I wonder just how it can be implemented in our fellowship.......... I am viewing the giftings of my brothers & sisters with new understanding. I can see I've too often wished for a 'one size fits all' maturity.

I have been choosing a word for several years and didn't even know it. This book has helped me to get more out of the word I've chosen for this year and given me ways to keep that word before me all year. I didn't love the narrator but was still able to focus on the content.

Great Content, Performance is almost robotic

What did you love best about The Art of Neighboring?

The message is excellent and motivational!

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was too robotic sounding. The sound quality was off - all "s" sounds are like the performer is too close to the mic, which is annoying.

Excellent read!

This book really changed my thoughts on what it means to be a good neighbor and what Jesus said about it as well. If you decide to read this book go in with an open mind and heart.

Narrator sounds like a robot

I genuinely thought this book was being read by a computer. the content of the book is good but the lack of emotion from the narrator makes it difficult to become enthralled.

So far, seems less about neighboring and more about proselytizing

About half an hour in, they've talked at repetitive length about how we can fix society's ills and bring everyone to Jesus by neighboring but are yet to provide any actual advice on how to neighbor. I knew this book had an evangelical perspective, but based on the description, I really was expecting it to focus on the benefits to oneself and one's neighbors rather than on those to the evangelical mission and to stopping kids from smoking weed or whatever other random examples they've mentioned so far in passing.

Also, the narrator doesn't seem to understand how to inflect normal elements of communication like questions and lists. It's as if he can pronounce English well but doesn't understand it.

Recommended it to lots of people!

Outstanding perspective and methods

As a believer, I felt this book provided a great way to view this addiction and gave methods that were much more appealing than most other books I've read on the subject.

As a spouse I have found Very helpful

I found the book to be very helpful to share with me what the person experiences first hand to help me as a spouse understand this issue is about more than just lust for porn & lust etc. but having insight into a persons thoughts, experiences & prayers helps me to know that this is a real struggle that is harder for some to deal with than othersand goes deeper than last as a spouse I need to know that there is more to this issue than just my spouse lusting after others. As a spouse I need to be reminded about the spiritual attack on male and female how it starts enough often as a child and how one can have a strong struggle with it and still desire for purity.

This book is a tool, a ladder out of Porn Hell. When you reach the point of Porn-impotency, its time to listen.

Great info Poor Reading

If you could sum up Memories of the Afterlife in three words, what would they be?

I did not like the way they narrated the book. With two readings and needing to narrate a dilogue why not use one reader for each part. Also they drop their voice so low you can't hear it in a car. Portraying emotions is well and good, but pointless if I can't hear it.

Someone needs to get fired...

Someone needs to get fired, dismissed without reference, for the audio production of this book. I don't blame the narrators, since both the male and female narrators, use the same breathless, idiotic delivery. It's the sing-song voice adults use to talk baby talk to infants. Let me ask you this, would a physics book be performed this way? I hated it so much this book sat in my library for about six months, even though I'd enjoyed Michael Newton's earlier work, until I realized that I could put the book on "faster" speed and that helped a little bit. At least enough so that I was able to listen to it.

Still, if you have a choice, get the written version of this. You'll thank me.

SOOOOOO Boring

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Some more excitement in the narration. I have listened to other Michael Newton books but this was just so monotone and boring. It really is painful to listen to although I am very interested in the content.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Haven't reached it yet. I'm not sure if I will finish.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration is one (slow) pace and really boring.

Who can stand these horrible fake voices.

Oh my gosh. Sample this first. The reader does odd spacing voices and accents for each person. It is so annoying. Ruins the book. A waste of my money.

Good content, poor narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend the paperback as I didn't like the way the female narrator read her part. Her tone wasn't always consistent with what was happening during the LBL sessions--such as when a client was recalling a past life trauma. I found this irritating and distracting as it didn't seem like she was genuinely into it. I enjoyed this book when I read it but was disappointed with this audio version.

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is a book about meditation. Fine for some. I wanted a book on neuroscientific facts or studies. The slow and boring pace where meditation is taught is not typical of a book about neuroscience. Change Through Meditation would have been a better title. I would not have wasted my money.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kelly McGonigal again?

NO!!!! I purchased the book after seeing an impressive performance on TED Talks. This book is nothing like that presentation. I feel a bit robbed.

What didnt you like about the narrators performance?

It was read so slowly, I was bored at the first sentence. Again, this was a "How To" on meditation, not material about neuroscience.

Love McGonigal!

I first became acquainted with Kelly McGonigal through her talks published on youtube, and her work on compassion and social change is the best. YES! she does use brain science to back up her ideas (one reviewer below denies it). Yes, her methods are practical, though they must be steadily and regularly implemented. Read her book on willpower along with this one. They dovetail nicely, and the book on willpower will help you understand and apply the principles in this book.

It really is powerful and can lead to change

Would you consider the audio edition of The Neuroscience of Change to be better than the print version?

It is a really awesome book. If you take the time you can change your world for the better. You should also read her book on willpower. I don't really care about the "traditional disciplines" What I do care about is that it works. If taking 20 min a day could make almost every part of your life better why wouldn't you.

Worst diction of any Audible narrator yet.

It ranks very high. Content is superior to most. Narration is almost a fatal flaw.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Neuroscience of Change?

The most memorable moments are those where scientific observation validates theory that I am able to train my brain/mind to produce new and different results in areas of my life of my choosing.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator sounds like she is making a deliberate attempt to mispronounce words. (i.e. exhale comes out ex hal) This is coupled with inflections of words in declarative sentences that I found very distracting.

If the content of this book were anything less than outstanding, I could not listen to it.

Doesn't quite live up to the (sub) title

Karen Casey is obviously a wise and compassionate woman who has grown tremendously through her life experience with alcoholism, codependency, and 12 step recovery. In this book, Casey is great at describing what recovery from codependence looks like but not so good at actually conveying how to set the boundaries required to get there (as the subtitle promises), except to repeatedly tell people to "detach" (again, without giving much guidance on how to do this) and go to 12 step meetings. As such, the book often reads more like an advertisement for Al Anon or CoDA -- and maybe that's the whole point -- than a true self-help manual, much as her last book often felt like a trailer for A Course in Miracles.

Bottom line is that while I enjoyed listening to the many stories of people's lives (lots to reflect on here), and even gleaned something of value from many of them, I wish Casey offered more explicit guidance for recovering codependents than simply telling people to go to 12 step meetings. (She begins to touch on this a bit toward the end in her discussion of the twelve steps themselves, but it's not much to work with.) On the plus side, I did find this book more helpful than her previous title ("Change Your Mind and Your Life Will Follow") and Joyce Bean's narration vastly improved, so I'd still recommend giving it a listen.

Disappointed at the content

What would have made Codependence and the Power of Detachment better?

One massive Al Anon advertisement. Author gives multiple scenarios of Co dependence and provides absolutely NO helpful advice to moving through these situations, only solutions given are "Go to Al Anon meeting"????

This is the single most helpful book I have ever read on detachment

Excellent!

Pema is simply one of the greatest minds of our time. This audio covers some of her older material, but expands into some new thoughts. I have most of her other audio books and this is by far...the best recording I have heard! There isn't the background noise or poor quality that is found in some of the other audio books. If you are thinking of buying any of her work or if you are new to her work then buy this one first. If you have her other work then buy it for the simply for the great quality! Lots of tools in this also. It is quite concise and great clarity on all levels. Thank you Pema...you have given so much needed wisdom.

If you are in need of healing

This set of lectures includes several guided meditations that you can use as a toolkit to help accept and abide with negative emotions, feel deeply supported and develop love and compassion for yourself and others. I listen to her instructions over and over always finding something new to deepen my practice. If you suffer from anxiety, resentment, feeling inadequate, anger, etc. these teachings and tools are a way through to light and love.

Enlightened work!

I have a lot of work to do! This is more than a great start for me! I would recommend this to anyone wanting to experience real change.

Pema Chodron is an amazing teacher. I am a great fan of her work.

Unfortunately, Awakening to Love is paced in a manner that is hurried and is actually difficult to listen to.

Awesome Tool for Any Recovery....

I am struggling with recovery from addictions that damaged me Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually - I found this audiobook soothing and full of positive direction for my life Now..... I will listen to it over and over and iM sure I will learn something new every time I do.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

Fred Stella reads it very well, albeit a little to fast. I had to slow down my iPod. I wish it had been divided in chapters so that it would be easier to go back and forth.

Washed out message with a horrible vocal actor

Painful to listen to, the voice actor was not a good fit for the subject. The entire book read like a list of suggestions in an email. There was nothing profound, and this is certainly not a book written for people who already have their heads out of the sand.

Ok if you can get past the narrator

Although when I listened to the sample reading before purchasing this, I thought I'd get along with it, when I tried to listen to it for more than a few minutes I found myself mildly irritated. I think it was to do with the author's dedication at the beginning to his wife; all a bit over the top and I started thinking about that film 'Meet the Fockers.' Although the message is to just do one thing a day to develop your 'Buddha Brain', it seemed a bit like he wants a commitment that you WILL do this every day. A bit too much like hard work . . .
