Poor content

I red a number of Richard Dawkins books, including "The God Delusion" and was looking for a reasonable, rational alternative viewpoint.

Unfortunately there is little to none in the content of this book.

Jonathan Wells does not make an objective analysis of pros and cons of Intelligent Design vs Darwinism, rather spends most of the time moaning about how ID is being discriminated in our times.

Truth will win out

Very good book. Hadn't heard of ID until a couple of years ago. The proponents of ID work slowly, given their lack of funding, but carefully.

They pretty much prove there is no way eyes , for example, could have just "evolved ". Mr. Wells uses Darwin's own written words to condemn Darwinism to the trash heap of failed theories .

I think the effort of the book is to help persuade the reader to investigate further . If one looks carefully at the arguments of Darwinists , which have a lot of circular reasoning inherent in them, then at the careful, logical reasoning of ID proponents, the choice of whom to accept as truthful is very clear.

ID proponents are very clear in their writings , that they are Not saying there is God behind life in the universe , rather that there is "something " that ordered the universe , and the life in it , rather intelligently.

Their argument is very simple. Darwinism says life progressed one step at a time , over billions of years. ID proponents show it cannot have happened that way. Therefore , Darwinism is all wet, and it's time to look for another, logical way life could have begun.

Further study of the subject is therefore called for, rather than just accepting the "consensus " of the Darwinists, whom, it is pointed out , are mostly Public Employees , afraid their Gravy Train of Public Funding of absurd "research" grants , as well as their lavish salaries , will dry up.

If you are the type that dares to question , you will want to investigate further. I enjoyed the book immensely.

One caveat: this was written in 2005. Time for an update . A new final chapter, perhaps ?

Good Summary of the Issues

This book was very interesting and it summarized many of the pertinent issues. I have read many other books and articles on this topic, therefore, I am aware of the nuances concerning important points that the author did not have time to cover in detail. A reader new to the subject may miss these points. Before reading this book, I would recommend "The Edge of Evolution" By Micheal Behe.

Awful narrarating

Wow.

This is the first audiobook I've ever just deleted without bothering to finish.

The narraration was so monotone and the content so dry, I would have rather stuck needles in my eye than continue.

Solid Cases Against Evolution

This book basically explains why evolutionists give this book 1 star. Dr. Wells shows that the best scientific evidence, far from supporting Darwinism, actually supports intelligent design.

An Excellent History!

This book is an easily accessible history of the idea of evolution. From its pre-Darwinian origin (Darwin did not discover evolution but rather a mechanism that drives evolution), to the modern synthesis, to the modern creationist debates it is all here. Unlike what we would typically find in a history book, this book is a fun read. The author spends enough time with the details of the individuals involved that you feel like you're actually reading about a human being and not just a fact. This is a more complete history than the six evolution textbooks sitting on my shelf (which all dedicate only one chapter to the subject of history). This is a must read for the student of evolution and a highly recommended read for the student of biology. I would also recommend it to the anti-evolutionist after all, it is a succinct history, an easy read and it covers the beginning of the creationist movement and some of the major players.

The book requires no pre-existing knowledge of evolution and thus is accessible to all. The narration is excellent and clear.

good audio but slightly boring

The audio presentation itself was excellent, but the book was not what I hoped. I thought it would have much more about current scientific discoveries. Instead it was more about the history of the conflict between religion and evolution. If you're interested in that topic, the reader is very engaging.

An Excellent History

This book is an excellent presentation of the twisted and turns that took place during the forging of this theory. Most people have the wrong impression that Darwin alone "created" the idea of evolution. This book is an excellent review of the human history involved in shaping of this theory.

Highly recommended for science or history buffs.

Do you know that these notes come with the book. You can download from the publisher's website and there is more available on the publisher's site. Should have known better I guess. Although, in the event that you bought a used book and can't access the online features of the CD.

Then these are pretty good. I could have gotten them from the publishers website for free. Otherwise I would've given four stars

Interesting on several levels

This book has many fascinating sections. Darwin was specially gifted in that he combined the ability to observe both minutely and thoroughly with the ability to analyze his observations in novel ways.

The book does not discuss evolution, although there are some tantalizing hints of the ideas he would later develop in The Origin of Species. There are some great discussions of geology, which was Darwin's first interest.

There are also some uncomfortable sections of the book, in which Darwin delves into the sociology, or anthropology, of the various natives he meets. While his observations are still keen, his analysis does not escape the prejudices of his day. That is disappointing, but perhaps it makes his breakthroughs in the physical sciences even more impressive.

The reader makes this book a trial.

I hope someone will re-do this book (unabridged) with a reader who has some of the fire, passion, muscle, and keen intelligence of the young Darwin. David Case's Wodehousian primness has no place in such a universe as that of Darwin's natural and often deeply human world.

very poor voice quality

I was so looking forward to this book that the very poor quality of the reader was doubly disappointing. This person sounds as if he has toilet paper wadded up in both nostrils and a tight rubber band around his tonsils, or some place else. I did listen to the sample, but apparently not long enough to appreciate the grating and monotonous qualities of this reader's voice. Appalling and a waste of money. Definitely not what I would expect from Audible.

Bearable only if you're really interested...

David Case transforms what is mildly interesting material into something plodding and tedious. He couldn't have sounded more bored if he was professionally trained to do so and it made me long for the days when I could sit and read a book.

a Great "read"

Would you consider the audio edition of The Voyage of the Beagle (Unabridged) to be better than the print version?

It is a great way to get through a long book. The great, older language is best heard spoken with a British accent.

Some of my favorite bug groups!

The more interesting intricacies of insect life histories are presented in a series of chapters, each including some wry commentary from the entomologist's point of view. As a biologist, I found this an easy and fun review of the groups (cockroaches, fireflies, crickets, wasps, bedbugs, dragonflies and butterflies) and enjoyed the author's perspective. The book was first published some 36 years ago with an update in 1993. The language and storytelling style are enjoyable and do not require a scientific background. I found that the author digressed a little too far into the realm of opinion at the end, but overall found this an enjoyable listen!

Outdated

This is one book that would have been improved if it was in an abridged format. The way studies were quoted gave the book the mood of reading a Master's Thesis rather than an entertaining science piece. Also, the content of the book is outdated, being published in 1968. An epilogue published in 1993 did not make up for having to wade through outdated material.

Good book

would love to hear more bug books like this on Audible, a few things are out dated but still a good book

often poetic celebration of insects

Some of the passages in this book are absolutely beautiful. Yes, it's dated with frequent references to the huge, 60's & 70's investment in the space program, but the intro alone makes a compelling case to appreciate and take greater interest in the ubiquitous insects.

Some chapters were more intriguing than others and, yes, there's an environmental diatribe (which I happened to like) in the last 20% of the book or so but I found it a really lovely piece of nature writing.

He goes into depth about fireflies, dragon/damsel-flies, locusts (not my favorite chapter), crickets, roaches, true flies and more. My only real criticism is that I would have like to have had an overview of the insect class before these "case study" chapters began

Give it a listen and you may find yourself intrigued with a part of the natural world you may have ignored.

Absolutely one of the Best!

The reader is perfect for this text, masterfully imparting the droll humor while offering wonderful information about the strange habits of various insects and the scientists who study them.

Don't waste your time

For those who are looking for a book on western cupping this isn't it, if it were any good I would recommend it for someone interested in Islamic cupping, but this book reads more like a self promotion brochure for "Sheiko". it falsely claims that this individual is the reviver of Hijamah. Poorly written in oversized text to fatten the book, it is difficult to comprehend and while there are some snippets of interesting information, it is not supported by any research and is riddled with inconsistencies which gave me the impression that the book was just slapped together without any real research or thought into what was being written. If you are interested in Islamic cupping or what is referred to as "Hijamah" then I recommend:Islamic Cupping & Hijamah: A Complete Guideor the Kindle version which is cheaper:Islamic Cupping & Hijamah: A Complete Guide, if however you came to this book because you are interested in the western (or chinese) concept of cupping read this instead:Traditional Chinese Medicine Cupping Therapy, 2e, it is the best book on cupping in general.

5 stars for the history, 2 stars for current theor

I am conflicted about this book. I was ready to give it 4 or 5 stars all the way until the last chapter. I was positive the authors would do a better job of explaining how life might have arisen at the hydrothermal vents.

Let me start with what was good about this book and then move onto some things I felt should have been addressed before publishing:

This book provides a history of science that is entirely focused on origin of life research. Since that is in the top two of my favorite things to read about, I was extremely excited about this book and remained so for the majority of the chapters. Focusing on origin of life studies allowed me to see various scientists in a different light. Their origin of life studies are usually a side story instead of the main event. But, in this book, the authors begin at ancient times and move forward, highlighting each person who became obsessed with explaining the origins of life. It was an extremely satisfying history. The authors were really on hard of Voltaire. His book Candide is my number one favorite book of all time. It was almost crushing to me to see Voltaire portrayed in such a poor light.
