Of dogs and gardens

What made the experience of listening to Nigel the most enjoyable?

I have quite recently discovered Don's show (the Gardeners' World), and I fell in love with that world of his garden, and his dogs. I was really glad to see his book available on Audible, and I do not regret spending a credit on it. Listening to the stories of family, dogs, gardens told by Monty himself was a special treat. I love how open and honest he is about his life, and he talks about some very personal and painful moments without ever going melodramatic or self-pitying. As a reader, and as a fan of his show, I respect that a lot.

He looks at his life and at lives of the dogs with the eyes of a gardener, who has seen fleeting seasons come and go, who daily deals with bitter losses and then hope.

The story of Nigel is told through the story of Monty's garden, and to fully enjoy the book, you have to watch the show at least once, and you have to love gardens (otherwise quite a large chunk of the book might seem boring, I guess).

I found this book utterly lovely, touching, and full of hope.

Loved it!

As a combined dog lover and gardening enthusiast, I just simply loved it. It's only flaw is, that it is much too short.

The narrator clearly is unfamiliar with the subject, and mispronounces almost all technical words. In addition, either the narrator is simply ignoring punctuation, or the book was translated into English from another language using nothing but google translate. You'd do better reading the Wikipedia page for microbiology than getting this book.

bizarre pronunciations and strange words and phrases thrown in like "she thin and young," or "money talks," that make it difficult to understand.

It is good introductory to basic microbiology. It is good for reference or revision if you are studying. It summarise the basics building blocks of microbiology concisely.

Time to go gardening!

I honestly had no idea there was this much to gardening. I appreciated the layout, especially when McCloud separated how to garden by style instead of vegetable. I found it way more useful to hear how to garden in certain styles, either in- ground, above- ground, or in pots and then what plants grow best in those styles, not the other way around. And the recipes at the end are delectably mouth- watering! Can't wait to try it all!

Helped me get my first vegetable garden going!

I really loved this audio book. It gave me tons of ideas for growing my own garden and then it walks you through the steps of what to do. The narrator is excellent and it was fun to take notes and make a plan. My garden was easily created and it was fun to collect all the seeds and plant them. I plan on juicing a lot of the vegetables. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I am super excited to see the end results. I can see the beginning sprouts now and it is fun to check the progress every few days.

very interesting and informative I'm glad I was able to listen to it as opposed to reading it because she adds a lot of the scientific classifications of the animals and my Latin is not very good

Misses the Mark

Text is dull. Terms are ill defined. Writing level is too high for the audience.

Variety over depth

I thought the book was well done. I really enjoyed how the author broke sex down into three main parts (meeting, sex, child raising). What I did not enjoy was only one to three examples of animals were given when describing a behavior with in the three parts. Overall good but because of its wide coverage less examples are given.

Not for average joe

This instaread summary is written in the same format as the others. There is a summary, key points with their description, and author information. In was a great way to get the primary information from the book without reading the entire book. I gave the gene a 4/5 simply because it wasn't written in laymans terms. It was so difficult for me to get through the terminology that I didn't understand. I did learn some interesting facts about genes and DNA and I was impressed with the amount of information packed into this short read. I recommend this to someone studying genes, specifically someone with a prior knowledge of scientific and genealogical terms!
