Publisher's Summary:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was the preeminent figure in late 19th-century detective fiction. A physician by profession, he soon found such popularity as a writer of detective stories that his writing was far more profitable than his medical practice.
'The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire' is a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Holmes and Watson are contacted by a country gentleman whose Peruvian wife has been caught red-handed sucking the blood from her baby's neck. Can there be any explanation other than that the woman is a vampire?
Members Reviews:
Vampire Deducted
Not the most twisty of Holmes stories and predictably dismissive of the supernatural. ("Ghosts need not apply.") But a very interesting and surprisingly sympathetic view of the rights and role of the Victorian wife is worked into the mystery. I had never read this one before a friend suggested it, and I'm very glad she did.
An interesting very short story
While I and others were able to solve the case within the first two pages, it was still fascinating to read what happened because Conan Doyle is a very good writer. In this story, he is asked to solve the case of a woman, the wife of the person requesting Holmes' help, who was seen to be a vampire. Holmes is told that the man, his client, was married to a woman from South America and was seen to bend over their child and suck the blood from the child's neck. This same woman also acted strangely on another occasion. She beat her husband's son from his first wife. I am sure that others will enjoy this tale as I did. This edition also contains a bio of Conan Doyle.
