Would you consider the audio edition of Escape from Sobibor to be better than the print version?

Yes, the narration was excellent and made the pronunciation of the names so much easier

What other book might you compare Escape from Sobibor to and why?

I haven't read anything focused on the holocaust before. But had read and listened to books like "The Liberator: One World War II Soldier's 500-Day Odyssey from the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau". Both of which are of the highest quality! Both seem extremely well researched, well organised, and both personal. Both do an excellent job at bring to fore the best and worst of humanity.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favourite scene was the beginning of the uprising despite, all the odds being against the captives and any realistic expectation of victory. The grim determination and the description of empowerment were awesome.

The must gut wrenching part of the story is when the message from the Jews made it to the allies. The response to that message? Nothing, the rest of the world including the Pope did nothing to help the Jews. How the rest of the world turned abandoned the Jewish people is unbelievable!

Great book about an awful period in Jewish history

What did you love best about Escape from Sobibor?

I do not usually write reviews unless the book is really good or terrable. My bad spelling is one good reason why I don't review many books as I do read those of others and I owe those people a big thank you.. it I s hard for me to call a book or story very good or great when it is about the extermination and physical and mental abuse of millions of innocent people.Both the writing and reading of the book really was interesting. It kept my attention to the point if I think I missed something I would go.back and start over. The author went around the world from south America to Russia to find people who survived the death c a np Sobibor and the massive escape attempt which some survived and did succeed in escaping. Think.what bravery. A massive escape attempt from a Nazi extermination camp. . The author interviewed most/all of the survivors who agreed to be interviewed and incorporated their stories in the book.It reads like a good novel and not at all like a like a dry academic historical book. If you have any interest in the holocaust or how individuals react and survive in condition where they can die a horrible death at any moment.

Important book for us all - despite its flaws

I was completely enthralled with the beginning half of this book - the author wove a good story and kept me entranced with true events about a disturbing time. I found myself suggesting this to many other "boomers" who might, like I, have protested the Vietnam War in the 60s, didn't know the clear response to people like us from the FBI and have been intrigued by the despotism of J. Edgar Hoover.

It is a good read but not all the way through. I got bogged down with the level of detail that Betty Medsger used and found that her story telling ability didn't continue through the second half of the book.

Like a former reader, I also found it puzzling why a man read the book when it is written by a woman.

Fascinating study but more politically-focused that I imagined. It makes a meaningful contribution to the study of organized crime even if the Mafia's role gets lost at times.

Would you consider the audio edition of Gangsterismo to be better than the print version?

I brought both the Print and the Audio and followed the Narrative. This is the first time I did it this way. Frankly, For me that worked very well.

What other book might you compare Gangsterismo to and why?

God's Bankers by Posner is the closest I can think of for comparison. Both are well researched and both present shocking insights.

What about Steve Coulters performance did you like?

The Performance was melodious, it did not get in the way of the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The story of Peterson's funeral and his widow's ordeal. The story of the anti-war protests made me angry and sorry for the returning veterans. What the protesters did was in excusable and shameful.

Any additional comments?

First book I have read that portrayed American soldiers in Vietnam in a favorable light. Most other depictions show drug addicted GI's as incompetents, cowards or both; and because if this, innocents are frequently killed. However, Dr. Wiest's book tells a story of Vietnam vets experiencing war a lot like veterans from other conflicts. They are not there by choice but they want to do their duty, they believe in their country, but they ultimately fight for each other - and they serve with pride and distinction. A wonderful book.

Very well researched and well written. Narrator was perfect. Worth buying even without a credit.

The story is depicted in great detail to the point it leaves you with a full understanding of it at the end.

IMPORTANT HISTORIC BOOK

What you must know from the start is the historic nature of this book. When jfk was killed -Jackie and the Kennedy clan hand picked William Manchester to write the full official account of the assassination from their end for posterity. Manchester was picked for 2 reasons-firstly he was a friend of jfk and secondly he was a very respected writer/ historian.

This is a remarkable account of EVERYTHING that was thought, done and said in the timeframe of the assassination and funeral. It would be hard to imagine a fuller accounting of that week. Every detail pulled me in tighter and tighter till I felt entirely part of the scene. I couldn't put it down! Though I was so wound -up and upset that I had to listen to something else in bed so I could sleep. I feel so emotionally drained by the experience that I too feel like I am in mourning for this president, despite the fact that I'm Canadian and was just 2yrs old when all this happened. Why am I so affected by something so removed and distant? Why were people around the world so intensely effected? It reminded me of when princess DI died, there was the same world-wide eruption of grief out of all proportion. I've meditated on this question- it seems important to learn why this is so. Was it their relative youth,their class, charisma? Those things are factors

but I think that We hang our dreams consciously or unconsciously on those that embody those rare characteristics of goodness and kindness. Those rare "heroes" of good give us hope for good in a relentlessly dark world. That's my conclusion there's one thing that this book makes all too clear and that is that Jackie was as astounding as the president in this regard-this book makes that all too clear

This is an important book that lays bare not just the tragedy but also the triumph of Jackie whose stoic example remains a testament for the ages. A BOOK NOT TO BE MISSED.

A note on the narration- I thought it was perfect.

Great Book, BUT...

I'm a huge Kennedy buff, and devour any of the books I can. This was one of the harder ones to stomach for 33 hours... The narrator was awful!! Whenever he was quoting someone, he would try to read it in what he assumed their voice sounded like, and it was absurd (and at times, flat-out creepy). His Caroline voice was particularly disturbing.

The ill fated chang kai-shek

As I believe that I am the first person to write a review on this fast moving account of the china's war of resistance I feel that it is necessary to proclaim how valuable this book is for the WWII buff. Most people are aware of the fact that China was involved in the war but they are not aware to what extent. China in fact was the first theater of WWII and experienced some of the first and most brutal communal war crimes of the war. This book is some what biased towards the Nationalist point of view and that of Chang Kai-Shek in particular. However it explains the communist point of view as well. After reading-listening to this book I came away with a feeling that the communists let the Nationalist camp bare the brunt of all the fighting while waiting for the war to end. Having saved its forces for the upcoming civil war the Communists were better poised to fight then the badly beat National forces. Thus leading to the current communist government in Bejing. As you might be able to tell I was left with a bad taste with the actions of the communist forces durring the battle for Chinas fight for survival.

Utmost Respect for Mr.Gaeton Fonzi

The author, comes across to me, as one of the most credible investigators of the murder of JFK. I would have absolutely loved to have met this man and listened to his wisdom. I remember the day I heard that our President was shot, and I saw Lee Harvey Oswald murdered that weekend, live on TV. Everyone I knew was weeping with intense sadness. It was a horrible day for our country. How could this happen in the great ole USA? And so, our generation had to live with this tragedy and then live with the lies our leaders told us about this event. Gaeton Fonzi has helped me tie up; many of the loose ends I had in my mind about that time in our history in a very credible and detailed book. For me the book is very interesting and it was hard to put it down. Gaeton was one of the true patriots of our day. Great book. Thank-you Audible for allowing the truth to be revealed through this book.

What a beautiful plane

I found this book fascinating but, of course, I love airplanes. I enjoyed reading about all the details about designing and building the 747. I remember when I first saw the Constellation I thought it was one of the most beautiful planes I had seen. When I saw the 747 I knew this one was absolutely the most beautiful. Joe Sutter tells about his youth growing up near Boeing Field and his desire as a child to design planes. He also tells about his summer jobs at Boeing when he was at University of Washington then going into the U.S. Navy in WWII. The majority of the book is about the 747. I found it interesting that Juan Trippe played such a key role in the design of the plane. I had read a few years about the battles between Howard Hughes (TWA) and Juan Trippe (Pan Am) for control of commercial aviation. I wondered why Hughes did not take an active role with the design of the 747 but maybe he was too busy with Hughes Aviation. I noted Sutter frequently credited his wifes support in helping him succeed at his job. Paul Boehmer did a good job narrating the book. If you are interested in aviation and history you will enjoy this book.

If you are into Aviation, this is a must read.

I am a pilot, and fascinated by books on aviation. This book held my attention throughout. It is written so that even someone that isn't a pilot can understand the difficulties of designing a complex aircraft like a 747, which is still one of the most successful and popular airliners in the world, and will be for some time to come. Excellent book, by the very person that designed the 747.

Great story

What a great story about one of my favorite airplanes. Lots of good technical detail without being overly complicated.

In an era where Boeing is having trouble selling the 747-8, I consider myself lucky to have had a chance to fly on one.

It was a good story. As others have mentioned, it's a memoir based around the development of the 747, not a nuts and bolts development story. The narration was horrible. He should be narrating the autobiography of the first robot to dance on Broadway. I almost gave up on the book but found that 1.25x speed smoothed over the bizarre pauses and inflections.
