Duración: 15 hrs and 9 mins

Title: Policing the City: Crime & Legal Authority in London, 1780-1840

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-18-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
In Policing the City, Harris seeks to explain the transformation of criminal justice, particularly the transformation of policing, between the 1780s and 1830s in the City of London. As utilitarian legal reformers argued that criminal deterrence ought to be based on certain and rational punishment rather than random execution, they also had to control the discretionary authority of enforcement. This meant in theory and practice the centralization of policing in the 1830s, and the end of local policing, which was seen as corrupt, inefficient, and unsuitable for rational criminal justice.
Revolutionary changes in policing began locally, however, in the 1780s. Such local changes preceded and inspired national reforms, and local policing up to the centralizing measures of the 1830s remained dynamic, responsive, and locally accountable right until its demise. Anxiety about policing had as much to do with the social origins of the police as it did about the origins of criminality, and control over the discretionary authority of watchmen and constables played a larger role in criminal justice reform than the nature of crime.
The national, metropolitan, and City police reforms of the late 1830s were thus the culmination of a contentious argument over the meanings of justice, efficiency, and order, rather than its beginning. Harris's evidence reveals how what we've come to think of as modern policing evolved out of local practice and reflects shifts in wider debates about crime, justice, and discretionary authority.

A very well laid out structure to quickly find the topics of interest and grasp the most essential aspects of Russian history.
    A very informative book
This is a very comprehensive and very informative book about Russia written in easy to read language with colorful pictures on virtually every page, and with many maps. The author tells readers about the different epochs in Russian history beginning in 862 and the Slavic tribes. The book tells about 54 important leaders of the country, 106 significant people, and 126 key dates.
We learn about many things by reading the book. For example: We find out that Russian dates were 13 days behind the US dates in the twentieth century, how and why names of Russian cities were changed, medieval Russia from the 9th to the 15th century, the origin and meaning of the name Rus, the Mongol invasion, the rise of Moscow, the Tzardom of Russia 1547-1721, the empire of Russia 1721-1917 which was given this name by Peter the Great, the Russian Revolution of 1917, Soviet Russia 1917-1991, where we discover that the experiment in Russia of communism collapsed in 1991 after 74 years. We also read about Russian involvement in World War II and about Russia today.
We learn about important figures in Russian history such as Ivan the Great, the first Romanovs, Peter the Great, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Putin, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and many more.
Each chapter has a summary and there is more than a dozen pages of bibliography showing the basis for this learned easy to read book.
    concise history of Russia
    MY THOUGHTS
I liked that the author provided some pictures but having read this on my e-reader the pictures were rather poor quality. This was a brief summary of many years of Russian history and all put in just under 100 minutes. That's a lot of information to cover in a short span of time. The book contained a lot of facts but I would have liked to have had some rather personal information from some of the people who lived there. There is a link at the end of the book that you can take an online course to discover more. It might be beneficial to do this if you're interested in Russian history. I did learn some very important information about Russia and the pictures, maps helped put it all in place. The author goes into the 54 important leaders, some of the important people and dates. I was fascinated with the different eras during the years in Russian history. The author talks of the names of cities and how they changed during the years. the Russian Revolution of 1917, Soviet Russia and so much more. We also get information on important people of Russian history, Ivan the Great, Peter the Great, Khrushchev, Putin, Obama and even Donald Trump. If you're interested in history, then you definitely want to read this book. Fascinating and educational. I thought USSR and Russia were one in the same.

Length: 1 hr and 34 mins

    Publisher: Charles River Editors

    Publisher's Summary:
It may be human nature to strive for perfection, but flaws and imperfections can bring character and create unique, unrivaled beauty in a league of its own. Old scars, burns, pockmarks, and other so-called blemishes of the like serve as reminders of disasters and adversities one has survived, no matter how grave or trivial. The uncooked macaroni shells glued to the card might be slightly askew and the glitter dispersed unevenly, but one tends not to even notice these mistakes, as they have already been won over by the endearing effort the child has put into the project.
Curiously enough, as much as humans steer away from imperfection, they can be inexplicably drawn to it. In 2012, the otherwise obscure Spanish town of Borja was thrust into the global spotlight, and had gone viral overnight. A well-meaning 83-year-old widow by the name of Cecilia Giménez, armed with a paintbrush and a small array of poster colors, trotted up to the 82-year-old fresco in her local church named the Ecce Homo, and gave it the eye-watering restoration no one had asked for. What began as a beautiful, but somewhat faded and spotty depiction of Christ crowned with thorns and dressed in blood-red robes had become an overly-simplistic, ape-like character with misaligned eyes, a pair of dots for noses, and an unfinished gaping mouth. The Good Samaritan's masterpiece was ruthlessly ridiculed and circulated around dozens of social media and news platforms, but the embarrassment would soon prove to be sweeter than it was bitter. Thanks to the accidental publicity, over 150,000 tourists flocked to the village for a picture with the fascinating fiasco, more visitors than the "sleepy town" had seen in over a century.

    Publisher's Summary:
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? The Age of Exploration and the explorers who set out on their history-making expeditions left many legacies and profoundly influenced history around the world. The voyages of men like Columbus and the conquests of men like Cortés had dramatic consequences for the natives, escalated tensions between the European nations, initiated imperialistic empires on a global scale, helped birth the United States, and ensured that the wars in the 20th century were truly world wars. In Charles River Editors' Legendary Explorers series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of the most important explorers of history in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
During the Age of Exploration, some of the most famous and infamous individuals were Spain's best known conquistadors. Naturally, as one of the best known conquistadors, Francisco Pizarro (1471/6-1541) is also one of the most controversial. Like Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortés before him, Pizarro was celebrated in Europe for subduing the Inca Empire, a culture that fascinated his contemporaries. At the same time, naturally, indigenous views of the man have been overwhelmingly negative.

    Title: Killing Rasputin
Subtitle: The Murder That Ended the Russian Empire
    Author: Margarita Nelipa
    Narrator: Sara Morsey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-07-17
    Publisher: WildBlue Press
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
At last a book about the so-called "Mad Monk" of Imperial Russia that lays to rest the myths and reveals the truth about one of the most controversial characters in human history while exploring the impact his murder had on a dynasty, a people, and a country.
Written in three parts, Killing Rasputin begins with a biography that describes how a simple unkempt "holy man" from the wilds of Siberia became a friend of Emperor Nicholas II and his empress, Alexandra, at the most crucial moment in Russian history. Part two examines the infamous murder of Rasputin through the lens of a "cold case" homicide investigation. And lastly, the book considers the connection between a cold-blooded assassination and the revolution that followed; a revolution that led to civil war and the rise of the Soviet Union.
Unique about this book on Rasputin, is that the author combines Russian heritage (her parents were forced out of Russia during World War II and arrived as refugees in Australia in 1948) with medical science and legal training. Nelipa relied on Russian-language sources that she translated rather than depend on the interpretations of others. Her primary sources include police documents and witness testimonies, an autopsy report, diaries, letters and memoirs written in their native language by the participants in these historic events. Secondary sources include Russian-languages newspapers and other publications from that era. The narrative is copiously referenced and augmented with documents, some of them published here for the first time.
Step into the imperial court of a 300-year-old dynasty in its final days with one of the most fascinating characters ever to grab our imaginations, judge whether Margarita Nelipa makes her case regarding his death, and if you agree that it was "the murder that ended the Russian empire".

    Tedious
How a book about a fascinating event in a fascinating time can be so boring is beyond me. Poor narrator doesn't help.Repeating same info over and over doesn't help. The worst thing is Nelipas habit of never describing an event from start to finish. Sometimes she starts in the middle some times at the end of the event. I wanted to scream. I take exception to the title of this book. The aristocracy in Russia work long and hard to cause their downfall ,so I don't think we can blame Rasputin. Miss Nelipas should listen to Great Courses RUSSIAN HISTORY . I don't go along with this white washing of Rasputin .I'm sure most of the tales about him were grossly exaggerated, as is true of other bad guys in history, like the Borges and the Claudians. Still he probably was no saint.

Religion Lecture disguised as Medieval History
I buy a lot of academic courses from The Teaching Company and the Modern Scholar. I thought this was a new title from Modern Scholar when I bought it. I didn't notice for awhile that it's from an outfit called, Now You Know. When I went to their website to see what else they offer, I discovered they are basically a Bible College look at academia. It was a slant I found limited and occasionally offensive. I wouldn't buy from them intentionally. I'm not their intended audience. Now I know.

    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
The tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales, triggered an unprecedented worldwide outpouring of grief from the public that adored her ever since she was first identified as the girlfriend of the Prince of Wales in 1981. Ever since August 31, 1997, people have struggled to account for the depth of the impact she seemed to have on people's hearts and minds.
First the little girl who felt that she had disappointed her family by not being a boy, then the schoolgirl who preferred pranks to studying, then the shy kindergarten teacher who won the heart of Prince Charles, Diana's anonymity ended forever only a few weeks after she began dating the heir to the British throne. Over the next 16 years, she lived her life in the public eye - a smiling, dutiful royal wife and mother who eventually rocked the monarchy to its foundations by disclosing the details of her troubled marriage to the world, shining a light on the hidden life of the notoriously private royal family.
This book examines the contrast between the private Diana and the public princess - the troubled yet radiant woman who believed that one must suffer in order to have compassion for others.

    Love everything about Princess Di
Really well done. Love everything about Princess Di.
    Beloved Princess
So, most of us know the story of Princess Diana and her troubled life. This book looks at all her ventures, from growing up in a stately home, her lovely attitude, and the pain that she had to endure as the possible Queen of England. Her first meeting with Charles swept her off her feet, and yet they only had 12 dates before he agreed to marry her. But there was another person in this duet, and she never left their lives. In fact the royals were concerned about Diana because she certainly wasn't the status expected by the royals. In a visit to a hospital , she was fascinated with the nurses and volunteers who helped AIDS patients. After her painful divorce from Charles, she continued to work with unfortunate hospital victims. Her continuous love for all the people she touched opened many doors for her, and ultimately made her the Princess of the People's Hearts. The book also discusses her untimely love for her two boys and how the three of them enjoyed their happy lives together.
There are more stories about her life, including the chauffeur, full of drugs, and the awful fascination by the paparazzi the followed her everywhere that ultimately caused the car wreck in a tunnel in Paris. She lasted a few hours but she died in a hospital. The funeral was held at Westminster Abbey for the friends, but outside millions of crushed people cried over this horrible event.
Read the book.. The print is fairly large and it can be read in about 2 days, a well chosen description of the very short life of Princess Diana.
Wonderful and enlightening story of Diana
So very much enjoyed this book. It cleared all the nasty rumors that were said if Diana which I always felt were untrue. She was the people's princess in every way and came back strong at the end of her short life.
    Queen of Peoples Hearts
I never get enough......reading stories of Diana Princess of Whales. She was extraordinary beyond belief. Taking on the Royal family was a very brave thing to do. I firmly believe that Charles was totally responsible for the breakdown of the marriage. He is a coward and a very selfish person.
