Title: Invasion: From the Armada to Hitler (1588-1945)
    Author: Frank McLynn
    Narrator: Jack Heinritz
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-24-16
    Publisher: Crux Publishing
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Most people know that Britain was invaded by the Romans, by the Vikings, and by the Normans. Many will know about the Spanish Armada, launched by Philip II in 1588 to bring Protestant England to submission. But fewer people know that Philip launched a second armada in 1596 or that invasion plans were drawn up by the French in 1692, 1708, 1743, 1756, 1759, 1796, and 1801, and by the French together with the Spanish in 1779. In 1719, Spanish troops even landed in Scotland. Charles XII and Peter the Great wished to invade Britain and Napoleon himself wrote that in his imagination he could see the tri-colour fluttering over the Tower of London.
New invasion plans were drawn up by the Germans in 1896 and by the French in 1898, and Britain narrowly avoided invasion by Nazi Germany in WW2. Yet despite the almost permanent threat of invasion by the Spanish in the 16th century, by the French from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and by the Germans in the 20th century, Britain has not been successfully invaded since 1066.
Beginning with the first real invasion attempt of the modern era and one of the decisive naval battles in world history, McLynn takes us through the many invasion plans and attempts and shows us how each one failed due a mixture of incompetent management, clash of egos, unreliable weather, and the strength of British sea power. He concludes with Hitler's failed invasion attempt during WW2 showing how despite all the risks, Hitler was lulled into a false sense of security by the ease with which Germany had managed to defeat France in 1940.
McLynn discusses the different strategies involved for invading Britain by sea and the means by which Britain tried to defend itself using diplomacy, economic warfare, espionage, and pre-emptive strikes. Finally, he shows that after having been threatened with invasion for four centuries, England was itself the springboard from which the greatest invasion fleet of all time was launched.

    Good summary awful narrator
What did you like best about Invasion: From the Armada to Hitler (1588-1945)? What did you like least?
A good summary of the past. Spoiled by the narration, "Yodi"? Really? Does no body edit these things. anyone with a passing knowledge of the History of WW2 will know Hitlers adviser was JODL pronounced yodel. This man should never be let near anything which involves pronouncing anything with a european prper noun. Amateur!
What did you like best about this story?
A concise summary of the topic.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jack Heinritzs performances?
    Never in a million years.
Was Invasion: From the Armada to Hitler (1588-1945) worth the listening time?
Not really - ruined by inept performance.
    Any additional comments?
Don't put yourself through it - good history ruined by reader

    Publisher's Summary:
    Sex.
It was just another commodity that the medieval royals had on tap. Not content with the wealth, power, and a lifestyle to match, they also seemed to have an unlimited amount of sex available. If anyone in power today were to behave in the manner that some of those that wore the crown did, then there would be a revolution quicker than you could say, "undress, wench".
Certain names immediately leap to mind when it comes to sexual appetites: Edward III, Edward IV, and of course Henry VIII. But it wasn't just the royal men at it; there were a whole list of royal women who enjoyed sexual liberation, before it was even invented.
This fun book highlights some of those that enjoyed lustful liaisons and even managed to cause scandal in their own times.

    Fascinating look into history
Definitely an interesting read and quite enjoyable. On top of that I actually learned a few things I didn't know before. If you enjoy history and a who was sleeping with whom you will want to read this book. Great addition to your e-library.
    Interesting
Nothing much new under the sun. If anyone has read Alison Weir's books on medieval history all would be just a rehash.
I dislike being required to having a required number of words in a review.

A nice book to read - not really the academic approach to the topic, but good for the relaxing evening.
    A good read.
    Interesting subject. ..
    Oddly Organized
This book was oddly organized. I anticipated it would be in chronological order but it wasn't. It hopped from one time period to another. Information was interesting but brief.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1854, a quarter of a million British soldiers headed east to fight in the Crimean War. Together with their French and Turkish allies, the goal was to free the important port city of Sevastopol from the clutches of Russia, thus keeping them from the seizing control of the Red Sea and thence Mediterranean. This they did, but not without considerable hardship, suffering and loss of life - over 21,000 British men fell to enemy fire, accidents and disease.
Many first-hand accounts of this war were penned by British officers, but there few were written by the common soldiers, as most were illiterate. As such, this account by Private Richard Barnham offers a rare insight into the daily lives of the soldiers serving in the Crimea. The passages he recorded during the war are not always an easy listen, as they detail many of the hardships of campaign life, the devastation of the cholera outbreak (which killed almost twice the number of those who died in battle) and the horrors of the military engagements. But Richard also gives great insight into the richness of the Crimean countryside and its people, together with the camaraderie of the soldiers themselves.

    Tying the succession together
A detailed history that describes the humanity of Englands royal line . Very interesting and easy to read and follow.
I began it in order to check the accuracy of some other books and videos I was reading and watching. I found it very helpful and enlightening.l
    The Tudors
Great book. Learned a lot, even at my age and given I am British by birth. Recommended read for historical fact.
    Excellently written!
Easy to read, especially for the task of understanding English monarchy for an American. Thoroughly enjoyable. I would recommend to any seeking an understanding of medieval England.
    An easy, informative
It was exactly what I wanted - history with a touch of real-life stuff. An easy, informative, read. KB
Best book on linking all the Monarchs timeline
I very much enjoyed and appreciated the author going through the lineage of the Tudors. Previously I read about each King/Queen separately, but gaps would leave me wondering how it all connected, esp in regard to the three heirs of Henry VIII.

Over 200 years span the lifetime of one of history's most notorious royal families. From political intrigue to religious revolution, the Tudors stamped an indelible imprint on humanity that can be still seen today. Escape the subterfuge and plotting of courtiers and explore the intellectual and architectural wonders patronized by the often nefarious family. Royal life may have been pampered, but the crown weighs heavier on some than others. From warring houses to exploring the New World, the House of Tudor changed the world forever.

Poorly written, no bibliography or references cited
This Cliff Notes-esque history is in desperate need of an editor. Run on sentences lasting paragraphs in this work are the norm. The author makes statements of fact without reference, and repeats assumptions without attribution of origin.
Any serious non-fiction book includes a bibliography, yet this one does not.
I am amazed at the 5-star reviews. I cannot believe they read the same book.
The author does not explain how the Plantagenets came to power in England, but that is the source both Lancaster and York claims to the throne. Omitting this is like a history of WWII omitting the attack on Pearl Harbor or German surrender in WWI.
This might have made a decent college term paper (if it had included references and footnotes), but it is to definitive history of the War of the Roses and House of Tudor as CSI is to forensic science.
I love history but the usual humdrum presentation usually eats away ...
Spectacular job Cameron White. I love history but the usual humdrum presentation usually eats away at my interest. I eventually give up put down the book, but this book was great! Glue to my hands great. I learned so much about the Dynastic Wars. It explains the details of what happened during these wars and the part each party had to play.
So if history is your cup of tea. Or this is a topic you need to read up on for school.... You should totally get this book. Well get this book anyways...
The writing is no better than I expect from high school students

This would rate a D as a freshman term paper.

    Excellent book
Fascinated by the story of the Tudors and the Stuarts and the English accent of this book. Amazed at how the history of England revolves around the Protestant struggle that sprung out of Anna Boleyns church. How lucky were the English. We would all be speaking Spanish today had the Spanish Armada sailed in better weather.

    Title: Dynasty
    Author: Tom Holland
    Narrator: Mark Meadows
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-15
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Dynasty tells the story of Rome's first dynasty of emperors, from its establishment by Augustus Caesar in the last decades of the first century BC to its final, florid extinction less than a century later. The line of autocrats known to historians as the 'Julio-Claudians' remains to this day a byword for depravity.
The brilliance of its allure and the blood-steeped shadows cast by its crimes still haunt the public imagination. When people think of imperial Rome, it is the cities of Tiberius and Caligula, of Claudius and Nero that is most likely to come into their minds.
    Critic Reviews:
"A compelling detective story of the highest order, In the Shadow of the Sword is also a dazzlingly colourful journey into the world of late antiquity. Every bit as thrilling a narrative history as Holland's previous works, [it] is also a profoundly important book." (Sunday Times on In the Shadow of the Sword)
"Written with flamboyant elegance and energetic intensity, Holland delivers a brilliant tour de force of revisionist scholarship and thrilling storytelling with a bloodspattered cast of swashbuckling tyrants, nymphomaniacal empresses and visionary prophets.... Unputdownable. " (Simon Sebag Montefiore, The Times, on In the Shadow of the Sword)

    Brilliant
Fantastic book. Narration excellent, but Tom Holland's understanding and bringing to life of this period is mesmerizing!
    Splendid account
If you could sum up Dynasty in three words, what would they be?
    A very enjoyable audio book
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dynasty?
I was unaware of the sweep and influence of the roman emperors
What does Mark Meadows bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
    A very enjoyable reading
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I like to listen to audio books as I complete other tasks
    Any additional comments?
I recommend this audio book to other listeners who love history
    Very Good
Very detailed and well written book. There was a lot in this history that is not generally known because most Roman history covers 900 year, but this covers only the short period of the Julio Claudio dynasty in a lot of depth.
    Excellent reading, great book
Loved the book, narrative history at it's finest. really puts you in the time period. narrator was perfect throughout. read or listen to Rubicon first, leads perfectly into this one.
    Excellence
Fiction holds no candle to the drama and outlandish nature of legendary reality. Well read too.

Title: The Strangest Family: The Private Lives of George III, Queen Charlotte and the Hanoverians

    Narrator: Adjoa Andoh
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 27 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-02-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
An intensely moving account of George III's doomed attempt to create a happy, harmonious family, written with astonishing emotional force from a stunning new history writer.
George III came to the throne in 1760 as a man with a mission. He wanted to be a new kind of king, one whose power was rooted in the affection and approval of his people. And he was determined to revolutionise his private life too - to show that a better man would, inevitably, make a better ruler.
Above all he was determined to break with the extraordinarily dysfunctional home lives of his Hanoverian forbears. For his family, things would be different.
And for a long time it seemed as if, against all the odds, his great family experiment was succeeding. His wife, Queen Charlotte, shared his sense of moral purpose, and together they did everything they could to raise their tribe of 13 young sons and daughters in a climate of loving attention. But as the children grew older, and their wishes and desires developed away from those of their father, it became harder to maintain the illusion of domestic harmony.
The king's episodes of madness, in which he frequently expressed his repulsion for the queen, undermined the bedrock of their marriage; his disapproving distance from the bored and purposeless princes alienated them; and his determination to keep the princesses at home, protected from the potential horrors of the continental marriage market, left them lonely, bitter and resentful at their loveless, single state.
At one level The Strangest Family is the story of how the best intentions can produce unhappy consequences. But the lives of the women in George's life - and of the princesses in particular - were shaped by a kind of undaunted emotional resilience that most modern women will recognise.
However flawed George's great family experiment may have been, in the value the princesses placed on the ideals of domestic happiness, they were truly their father's daughters.
    Critic Reviews:
"A masterpiece. Beautifully written, impeccably researched, this heartbreaking narrative of family dysfunction and royal sacrifice is an absolute page-turner." (Amanda Foreman, author of Georgiana')
"Enthralling...you know you are in the hands of a master narrator as well as a profoundly perceptive historian. And like all great historical writing, the book transcends its immediate story - gripping and moving though that is - to be a timeless reflection on the human condition." (Simon Schama)
"Colourful and brilliantly narratedexcellent both in her narrative skill and her scholarship.... Hadlow has produced a perceptive, lively and wonderfully enjoyable book." (Sunday Times)
"Fascinating...in this densely detailed yet fast-paced book, as drama follows drama, the interest never flags. Each story is a revelation.... Hadlow has an eye for graphic details and gives generous space to minor characters...she is also adept at the telling phrase and makes splendid use of the period's vivid letters, diaries and memoirs." (Guardian)
    "Engrossing....
