It was so boring and all the author did was elaborate on the most dull subjects.For around 4 chapters it talks about Toby eating MILDEW and how he was counting the time by eating it. I din't recommend this book to anyone!

A much hyped novel that I finally decided to read, Seraphina came across as a little underwhelming. Not that I had much expectations before - prior to starting I only had a vague idea that it is an epic fantasy with dragons, and seemed much older in publication (that cover tricked me!) than it is. Seraphinaâs story takes place in the kingdom of Goredd, where she is a human-dragon hybrid in a society that has had just 40 years of peace with dragons. If you are thinking about the mechanics of such a conception, worry not - the dragons can shift to human forms called saarantrai when they want to enter human society. The two species are vastly different - humans are, well, temperamental, prone to making decisions on emotions rather than logic and quite judgemental. Dragons, for their part, are an advanced species, logical to a fault, and uncaring of emotions, and utterly disrespectful when it comes to human customs. In the past, they waged a war with the humans for the hunting grounds that became human kingdoms, but in this relatively newer peace of four decades, tensions are rising again now that the leader of the dragons is about to sit the kingdom that forged the truce.

The major arc of the novel is very political - there are forces, internal and external that donât see a point to the peace. Seraphina, for her part, has stayed out of court politics, but now that she has been made assistant to the court musician (and the unfortunate one who has to arrange ALL the entertainment at the palace) and teacher to the younger princess, she is unwillingly drawn into it. Also, there is the bastard prince (who is also fiance to the young princess) who is continuously amazed by her bravery and keeps thinking she is doing it out of civic duty or something. So, she is trying to hide her dragon part, while also helping out her dragon uncle find the perpetrator to the crime of killing the older prince, and trying to also defy her father who always forbade her from pursuing her musical talents. She embodies some aspects of a biracial identity in that she passes for human, and yet because of her status as belonging to both humans and dragons, understands and bridges the gap between them.

The novel is not all court intrigue and seriousness, though.

Tween/teen book club loved it

As an adult, I really enjoyed this book. I lead a tween/ teen book club and they loved it too! This was one of our club's favorite of the year. It is well written, engaging story and the content is appropriate for young teens without being little kid-ish.

Enjoyed This Book

3.5-4 stars. Enjoyable, creative story incorporating the brothers Grimm, ghosts, a small-ish town, and love. Kind of reminded me of an M. Night Shyamalan movie... but in book form (but maybe that's because I'm watching one as I write this review).

A magical, wonderful fairy tale. How could you go wrong?

I'd rate this 4.5, maybe even 4.75 stars.

If you're a believer in happy endings, in fairy tales, enchanted spells, ghosts that have a purpose, and evil forests, than Tom McNeal's wonderfully magical Far Far Away is a book for you. But if you can't get your head around any of these concepts, this is probably not a book you'll enjoy.

In a land called (of all things) Never Better, Jeremy Johnson Johnson (that's his real name; it's not a typo) is a smart, sensitive boy who keeps to himself. You see, Jeremy hears voicesâor, more accurately, one voiceâthe voice of Jacob Grimm, one half of the famed fairy tale-writing Brothers Grimm. For reasons neither of them can quite understand, Jacob is tasked with protecting Jeremy from the evils that lurk in this world.

But neither Jacob nor Jeremy consider beautiful, mischievous, and athletic Ginger Boultinghouse a threat, not even after she takes a bite of a cake so delicious it's supposedly enchanted with a spell, that causes you to fall in love with the first person on whom you cast your eyes after taking a bite. Naturally, Ginger sees Jeremy first, and finds herself inexplicably enchanted, even though she doesn't believe in such magic. And while Jacob isn't happy that Ginger's attentions are keeping Jeremy from his studies, or that she is somehow convincing him to sneak around late at night and play pranks on residents of their town, Jeremy enjoys the attentionâuntil it brings him more trouble than he bargained for.

And that's just the start of Jeremy's problems. Because in addition to his fellow townspeople suddenly shunning him, there's a small problem of his father owing so much money on their small house that they're about to lose it to the bank. Plus his father hasn't left the house in years.

Would you consider the audio edition of Doodeedoo to be better than the print version?

I really think the narrator brings extra life to the story. It's wonderfully narrated.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Fred. He was a quirky character.

What about Chris Barness performance did you like?

The different voices, the pacing of the narration and the great intonation. His Scottish accent is so nice to listen to and he reads beautifully.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It's a rather short children's book, so this question is not too relevant.

Any additional comments?

I was given a free copy in exchange for a review. I don't read a lot of children's books, but this one was very creative and sweet. I think it's a lovely read for primary school children.

Fun Children's Stories

Would you listen to Doodeedoo again? Why?

I listened to Doodeedoo, and the other two stories, with my youngest. He was captivated by the stories, especially Doodeedoo, and really enjoyed it. He asked to listen to it several times, especially when laying down to relax.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Doodeedoo?

The ending of the story Doodeedoo was the most memorable. It teaches children, and adults, that acceptance of someone is okay even if they are different than us. It teaches us that sometimes when a person seems angry, it's not that they are angry at us, it's that sometimes there is something more going on. Being a friend and being nice can help someone else overcome some fears and struggle. We can only give them a chance.

Which character as performed by Chris Barnes was your favorite?

The mouse in Doodeedoo. She was a tiny little thing but as brave as a lion. She overcame her fears by finishing a scary book, and by learning to befriend someone who seemed scary.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The book is relatively short. It has a collection of 3 different stories which gives you the option to listen to them all or listen to them one at a time. My youngest son and I listened to them all in one sitting but his favorite was Doodeedoo, and he asked to listen to that one more than the rest

Heroes, Villains, Action, Secrets Revealed and Wrongs Righted

This book is perfectly plotted for the middle grade reader. We have secrets, the opposition of mostly good and mostly evil, twisty developments and a smart, reckless heroine smack in the middle. It is more advanced than a "find the magical object" quest adventure, but not bogged down by excessive court intrigue or over-fussy world building.

Our heroine and her pals are well rounded, distinct, and brimming with appeal and personality. Matters of good and evil are given a light edge of grey to get the reader thinking. Injustice, though, when encountered, is stark, and good will ultimately prevail. In the meantime, though, there are secrets to be uncovered, adventures to be had, and threats to be surmounted.

We have an interesting and comfortable medieval-ish world and a manageable landscape. There is a fine selection of secondary characters, and each is given a bit of something memorable to say, do or be. Mercifully, there are adults who are honest and dependable, so this is not one of those children's adventures in which all of the adults are unaccountably dopes.

Action is mixed with humor is mixed with intrigue is mixed with suspense, so the reader's attention is always held. The storytelling is punchy enough that we don't have to wade through yards of exposition, but not so cryptic or episodic that the reader gets lost.

The upshot is we have a fine and engaging fantastical adventure for an independent reader ready to step up a bit, and we have a fine and determined heroine leading the way. That's a nice find.
