    So touching, funny, wonderful
I've loved Lisa Scottoline's fiction for years and hearing this compilation and expanded take on her and her daughter Francesca's Chick Wit columns was a joy. The fact that these two talented women can not only write extremely well, but can also read what they've written in such an engaging and likable way is just amazing. I can't recommend this book strongly enough!
    Gives you a laugh

A funny book that will make you laugh - - as a single parent I recall so many of the same moments of trying to keep everything together and wondering how I would survive - yet alone how two kids would survive thrive and grow up to be responsible adults. It reminds us that humor really is the best medicine.

  • Running the Books Audiobook by Avi Steinberg

    Title: Running the Books
Subtitle: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian
    Author: Avi Steinberg
    Narrator: Dustin Rubin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-19-10
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 82 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Avi Steinberg is stumped. After defecting from yeshiva to Harvard, he has only a senior thesis essay on Bugs Bunny to show for his effort. While his friends and classmates advance in the world, he remains stuck at a crossroads, unable to meet the lofty expectations of his Orthodox Jewish upbringing. And his romantic existence as a freelance obituary writer just isnt cutting it. Seeking direction - and dental insurance - Steinberg takes a job as a librarian in a tough Boston prison.
The prison library counter, his new post, attracts con men, minor prophets, ghosts, and an assortment of quirky regulars searching for the perfect book and a connection to the outside world. Theres an amiable pimp who solicits Steinbergs help in writing a memoir. An industrious gangster who dreams of hosting a cooking show titled Thug Sizzle. A disgruntled officer who instigates a major feud over a Post-it note. An ex-stripper who asks Steinberg to orchestrate a reunion with her estranged son, himself an inmate. Over time, Steinberg is drawn into the accidental community of outcasts that has formed among his bookshelves - a drama he recounts with heartbreak and humor.
Running the Books is a trenchant personal exploration of prison culture and an entertaining tale of one young mans earnest attempt to find his place in the world while trying not to get fired in the process.
    Critic Reviews:
"Steinberg writes a stylish prose that blends deadpan wit with an acute moral seriousness. The result is a fine portrait of prison life and the thwarted humanity that courses through it." (Publishers Weekly)

    A Prison Memoir
I picked up this Audible book because I thought I might learn something about living and workiing in a prison. The book turned out to be a memoir of a Jewish Harvard graduate and his two years "behind bars" as a prison librarian. You will, however, learn more about prison life and the lives of prisoners than you would expect from a memoir. So I use the term lightly. That said, this is an informative, entertaining, thoughtful, and often funny description of life behind bars. The writing is crisp and the reading of Dustin Rubin is terrific. The book is worth the time for the character studies alone. Enjoy.
    Mediocre at best
I had high hopes for this story. Unfortunately that's as far as it got. I found the writing to be sophomoric and overall a story that stayed at the surface. I never became involved with any of the characters or knew enough about them to care very much what happened to them. I was left wondering what the authors purpose was when he wrote this. It wasn't funny enough to be humorous or introspective enough to make you think about anything deep. Not awful but I'd never recommend it to a friend or relisten to it.
    books behind bars
Vibrant story about the life and times of an Ivy educated dude that scored a job as a librarian in a Boston city jail. Some interesting twists and turns, highs and lows.
    Great performance but sorta boring
I listened to a little more than half of this one and gave up. It didn't hold my attention.
    Not quite
A first effort. Are we trying to hard to make the inmates funny? Not funny? Scary to a Jewish kid? Is this about being Jewish in a jail library? Sorry, writing rather college level - lots of unnecessary adjectives.

I am fat, begins Judith Moores unflinching account of her life. As she describes her obsessions with food, struggles with self image and troubled relationships, she refuses to become an object of pity. Moore is the recipient of two NEA grants and a Guggenheim fellowship. Her previous book, also a memoir, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

    Heart wrenching, raw and real.
A great read. Her story in brutally honest and thought-provoking. I wanted to reach through the pages and hug the fat little girl who was starved for love.
    Fat Girl
Great little book. It will make you cry. It's really honest and sort of heart-breaking. I highly recommend this quick read little book. I loved it !!
    Great Read
This book is amazing. It is written so raw and some of it is hard to take. Fat Girl is a hard read meaning it is very touching.
    A must.
An excellent read on numerous levels. Heart-wrenching and unflinchingly honest, I read it cover to cover.
    A harrowing book.
This is a relentlessly honest memoir by the late Berkeley writer Judith Moore. Anyone who has ever struggled with weight will immediately recognize a lot of what she writes here, although her tales of her terrible childhood and homelife bear out Tolstoy's famous dictum about every unhappy family being unhappy in its own way. A tough read, but also fascinating, economical and brave.

  • Every Man in This Village Is a Liar Audiobook by Megan K. Stack

Title: Every Man in This Village Is a Liar
    Subtitle: An Education in War
    Author: Megan K. Stack
    Narrator: Dana Green
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-15-10
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 20 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A shattering account of war and disillusionment from a young woman reporter on the front lines of the war on terror.
A few weeks after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11, journalist Megan K. Stack, a 25-year-old national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, was thrust into Afghanistan and Pakistan, dodging gunmen and prodding warlords for information. From there, she traveled to war-ravaged Iraq and Lebanon and other countries scarred by violence, including Israel, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, witnessing the changes that swept the Muslim world and laboring to tell its stories.
Every Man in This Village Is a Liar is Megan K. Stacks riveting account of what she saw in the combat zones and beyond. She relates her initial wild excitement and her slow disillusionment as the cost of violence outweighs the elusive promise of freedom and democracy. She reports from under bombardment in Lebanon; records the raw pain of suicide bombings in Israel and Iraq; and, one by one, marks the deaths and disappearances of those she interviews.
Beautiful, savage, and unsettling, Every Man in This Village Is a Liar is a memoir about the wars of the 21st century that listeners will long remember.
    Critic Reviews:
A bell-clear, powerful indictment of the debacle of recent Middle Eastern war policy. A scathing look at the human costs of war. (Kirkus Reviews)
"Stack takes readers deep into the carnage where she was exposed to the insanity, innocence, and inhumanity of wars with no beginning, middle, or end. Her soaring imagery sears itself into the brain, in acute and accurate tales that should never be forgotten by the wider world, and yet always are.. Anyone wishing to understand the Middle East need only look into the faces of war that Stack renders with exceptional humanity." (Booklist)
[A] searing memoir.gripping accounts of the sorrows of war. [Stacks] vivid, atmospheric prose and keen empathy make her a superb observer of the regions horrific particulars. (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Every American should read this book.
This book gives a good impression of the realities of war and the effects of policy in the Middle East.
Some of the writing was silly
'Stars' subtracted off for silly writing style. The last 1/4 of the book is very good, though, and redeems itself. Much has already been said about the contents so I will not repeat. My problem (only 3 stars) is the irregular quality of the writing. When Megan Stack writes as a reporter I appreciated the story. Factual from her viewpoint, straight forward, gripping. But then, too often she writes as if she is a novelist (albeit not a very good one, in my opinion.) Too many (silly) similes and ridiculous metaphors. These writing techniques were overused and often left me scratching my head as to their significance or purpose. In one passage where she told us that (in Egypt) big tanks, during a civil disturbance, were appearing in the streets during foggy weather, she writes "tanks loomed through the fog like dinosaurs....." Huh!
Dinosaurs???? Don't we all know what tanks look like? What Foggy weather looks like? 'Nuf said. Now we have to imagine dinosaurs........something no living being has actually ever seen?
The language is just too funny and incomprehensible.
The story is good, though. Worth reading just for the POV that the middle eastern people have towards America.

Title: The Woman Who Fell from the Sky
Subtitle: An American Journalist in Yemen
    Author: Jennifer Steil
    Narrator: Jennifer Steil
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-11-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 17 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Restless in her career and her life in general, Jennifer Steil, a gregarious, liberal New Yorker, initially accepts a short-term opportunity to teach a journalism class to the staff of the Yemen Observer in Sana'a, the beautiful, old, and very conservative capital of Yemen. Seduced by the eager reporters and the enticing prospect of spreading democratic journalistic ideals there, she extends her stay to a year as the paper's editor in chief. But she is quickly confronted with the conservative realities of Yemen---and their surprising advantages.
She discovers unexpected benefits in the concealment behind the modified burqa she wears. In teaching the basics of fair and balanced journalism to a staff that included plagiarists and polemicists, she falls in love with her career again. In confronting the blatant mistreatment and strict governance of women by their male counterparts, she learns to appreciate the strength of Arab women in the workplace. And in forging surprisingly deep friendships with women and men whose traditions and beliefs are in total opposition to her own, she learns a cultural appreciation she never could have predicted.
    Critic Reviews:
A lovely book that offers a large measure of cultural understanding in a region that is too easily misunderstood and caricatured. (Nina Burleigh, author of Unholy Business)
    Members Reviews:
    Needs a narrator
I wasn't able to continue with this because of the narrator, who was the book's author. She reads too quickly, so words are missed and the key issue was, she is READING. A real audiobook narrator, in my opinion, is 'acting' the book, not reading it and it makes all the difference. It's one I chose without listening to a sample, unfortunately.
The other fault I noticed is that all the credits were read before the story began. That's again someone not understanding what is different about an audiobook. Credits are at the front of a regular book, but you can skip them if you like, returning later or not. I don't think you're very interested in all the people who helped a writer before you've actually read the book. I forced myself to try and find them entertaining, but a bunch of names one doesn't know usually aren't. I've been in lousy workshops where they did the same thing. At the end of something terrific, one does care about the great people who put it together and that's the time to celebrate them. At the beginning, it's off-putting and for me, shows a lack of understanding of the audience that doesn't bode well for the rest of the experience.
This audiobook was an error on my part, but the book might be worthwhile in print.
Almost made me want to go to Yemen!
Loved the story and the characters and learned a lot about Yemen too! I'm recommending this one to friends.
Fascinating look into a foreign culture
Other than reading this book, I know nothing about Yemen. It's fascinating to have a look into a small part of that culture. The story is interesting (romance, career achievement, hijinx) and the narration is lovely. If you are looking for a little bit of "tourism" without leaving home, I think you'll enjoy this book.

    Members Reviews:
Inside Joke to the Enlightenment Community
Crowley's book is one big inside joke for people who have already invested in exploring enlightenment. For those who haven't, much of the humor will be missed. For those who have, parts of the book will be hilarious.
The cleverness is excellent. There are flaws. The envelope is occasionally pushed too much on irony and snarkiness. But there are good laughs, and some good teachings.
    Hilarious, insightful
Marvelous. Just a great book on really showing you that "people do what they do". Laugh out loud funny.
    Loved it!
I loved this book! Many of his stories reminded me of my childhood in the early 70s. The author is insightful and often very funny.
    Pass the Jelly Boring

    Title: This Book Is Overdue!
Subtitle: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All
    Author: Marilyn Johnson
    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-16-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 29 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Buried in information? Cross-eyed over technology? From the bottom of a pile of paper and discs, books, e-books, and scattered thumb drives comes a cry of hope: Make way for the librarians! They want to help. They're not selling a thing. And librarians know best how to beat a path through the googolplex sources of information available to us, writes Marilyn Johnson, whose previous book, The Dead Beat, breathed merry life into the obituary-writing profession.
This Book Is Overdue! is a romp through the ranks of information professionals and a revelation for readers burned out on the cliches and stereotyping of librarians. Blunt and obscenely funny bloggers spill their stories in these pages, as do a tattooed, hard-partying children's librarian; a fresh-scrubbed Catholic couple who teach missionaries to use computers; a blue-haired radical who uses her smartphone to help guide street protestors; a plethora of voluptuous avatars and cybrarians; the quiet, law-abiding librarians gagged by the FBI; and a boxing archivist. These are just a few of the visionaries Johnson captures here - pragmatic idealists who fuse the tools of the digital age with their love for the written word and the enduring values of free speech, open access, and scout-badge-quality assistance to anyone in need.
Those who predicted the death of libraries forgot to consider that in the automated maze of contemporary life, none of us - neither the experts nor the hopelessly baffled - can get along without human help. And not just any help; we need librarians who won't charge us by the question or roll their eyes, no matter what we ask. Who are they? What do they know? And how quickly can they save us from being buried by the digital age?
    Critic Reviews:
A spirited exploration of libraries' evolution from fusty brick-and-mortar institutions to fluid virtual environments. (Kirkus)
This is a book for readers who know that words can be wild and dangerous, that uncensored access to information is a right and a privilege, and that the attempt to catalog the world in all its complexity is heroic beyond compare. (O, The Oprah Magazine)
    Members Reviews:
    Marian Isn't You Librarian
If you havent visited your local library for a while, you might be in for a surprise. Marilyn Johnson in This Book is Overdue lets us know why Marian the Librarian is now a cybrarian. Everything has not gone e, but the old patterns are passing even in the most isolated repository. This book informs the reader about the state of libraries and librarians as they are coming to be er have become. Anyone familiar with libraries of late will find contemporary perspectives. For example, a section details the role of the Federal Government in trying to breach confidentiality. This is not a new issue, but has new implications. Other chapters tell the inside story and reveal the dark side of libraries. A chapter on activism among librarians in the US and abroad is interesting. This is a very entertaining and informative tome. Anyone who loves books will not be disappointed. Anyone seeking to understand how the e-revolution is being operational zed in the country will be rewarded for reading. The reading of Hillary Huber is very good.
    Love It!
This book was written for anyone who loves libraries, librarians, and looking towards the future in the field.

Miserable and lonely, Stephanie left Damascus to visit an ancient Christian monastery carved into the desert cliffs.

A remarkable, wise and lovely book from a truly gifted new writer, The Bread of Angels brims with originality and insight. There is poetry herethe language and the depth of attention recall the young Annie Dillard. But this is, above all, a love story, and a compelling one.
