  • Miss Lonelyhearts Audiobook by Nathanael West

    Title: Miss Lonelyhearts
    Author: Nathanael West
    Narrator: Peter Joyce
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-21-11
    Publisher: Assembled Stories
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The columnist of... the New York Post-Dispatch, Miss Lonelyhearts, is initially cynical about the letters he receives for help. They are a joke. Gradually however, the letters start to move him but he is powerless to do anything. Retreating from the pain into a fantasy world he starts to believe that he is a Christ figure, a universal saviour. But Christ died for the sins of others! The pen may be mightier than the sword but the author wields his like a cleaver, splicing images together to present a savagely grotesque world. Ahead of his time, the novel had to wait another 20 years to find another author to match West's bitter humour. This book is not for the fainthearted.

    Members Reviews:
    An American Classic
I read it thirty years ago and it still holds up. An American classic.
    A Rather Bizzare Story
I read this book on recommendation from a radio personality. The prose is well-written, but it is a rather bizarre story, which I rate as about a C.
    Hollywood of a bygone era
A devastating critique of Hollywood - - - although written about a bygone era, it's an insight into the unfulfilled dreams and desires of Hollywood want-to-be's - - - is it relevant now? - - - maybe not in the naivete of the 30's or 40's - - - but the aspirations of those who want to challenge the film business.
    A Classic Tale of Hollywood
I read Nathaniel West's THE DAY OF THE LOCUST many years ago and purchased it again to go back to the early tales of Hollywood and the struggles of its denizens in the depression era. The characters are so varied, and the descriptive writing is done beautifully. Once again, West has captured those "Hollywood dreams" and has brought them back to reality in tough times in Hollywood. The book should be read by ANYONE wanting to come to Los Angeles and to follow their path to the reality of Hollywood...or, Gollywood, as it really is "yesterday and today". Brilliant treatise on "the perils of Hollywood."
    Two Winners.
I love both these short novels. I'd read them years ago and they seem even better to me now than they did then. Forced to pick between them, I guess I'd say, 'The Day of the Locust,' is the stronger of the two, but they are both astounding and I might, tomorrow, choose, 'Miss Lonelyhearts,' as the better. How tragic that West died so young as he was clearly a genius in the making.

  • John Halifax, Gentleman: Volume Two Audiobook by Dinah Craik

Title: John Halifax, Gentleman: Volume Two
    Author: Dinah Craik
    Narrator: Peter Joyce
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-13-11
    Publisher: Assembled Stories
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
This is Volume Two of the greatest romantic narrative novel of the early 19th century. John Halifax, Gentleman, tells the story of an orphan boy whose first words in the story are Sir, I want work; may I earn a penny? By hard work, diligent study and an unshakeable faith in his God, John attains wealth and happiness, despite much hardship and heartbreak throughout his life. The story chronicles the class movement of the time and gives us a remarkable description of social, political, and industrial change.
Set in Gloucestershire in the heart of England and told by Phineas, his soul mate and lifelong friend, who observes John through all his glorious moments, self-doubt and resolution, the story is simple, uplifting and heroic. It is a detailed study of a man and his family that also presents the listener with a broad view of Britain during one of its most troubled times. A genuine classic, most entertaining, and certainly a tale which lives up to the appellation epic in its conception and delivery, John Halifax, Gentleman was first published in 1856. Due to popular demand, it has never been out of print. This is the first unabridged recording of Dinah Craiks masterpiece.
About Assembled Stories: Over the years the national press have reviewed Assembled Stories titles as "excellent", "remarkable", "entrancing", "superb", "magic for sure", "masterly", "wonderful", "a class act" and "a splendid example of audio at its best".
    Critic Reviews:
This tremendous family story is set in a period of stormy social change from the 1770s to the 1830s. In his journey from penniless orphan to mill owning philanthropist, John is driven by duty, his love of God and humanity. The effects of war and bad harvests on the rural poor and corruption of parliamentary rotten boroughs [in one of which Halifax refuses to stand] are a small part of the wide-ranging backdrop. Every hour is hugely rewarding - and what an accomplished reading. It conveys every nuance of emotion, making the listener feel richer for having lived through so much. (Observer)
"Peter Joyce is the most remarkable one-man band in audiobook publishing. Joyce, an experienced actor, reads them all himself." (The Independent)
"Heres such a neglected Victorian classic, a huge bestseller in its day, ready to be rediscovered through Joyces excellent reading." (Publishing News)
