Marvelos, absolutely marvelous. It's a gripping soulful captivating sequel to his previous book, Standing at the Scratchline. I would highly recommend reading that book first. I couldn't wait to get in my car to listen to the next part... He writes so well. The detail he gives to the characters as well as the events is all consuming. Read it. It's good. (But I still recommend reading Standing at the Scratchline first.) Congratulations Mr. Johnson. Well done.

I listened to these two novels back to back ... 58 hours. To write a review for each is difficult as my brain holds them as one whole. So I'm writing one review that I will post for them both.

The plot is well written and the author spent time on character development which allowed the listener to fully understand the actions the characters choose to take as the story unfolded.

This is an enjoyable story, a generational family saga as described by the Publisher's Summary, stretching from the early 190o's into the1980's. If you are looking for a good adventure that gives insight into some aspects of Black lives during the "jim crow" era, these two novels could be for you, but they should be read in order.. Otherwise the second will leave you with less understanding. If you read the first one, I guarantee you will want to read the second.

The second story picks up where the first story leaves off. This saga is about revenge, envy, greed, jealousy and many other negative descriptives. It is a thought provoking saga and it challenges the listener to "suspend disbelief" to a good degree. It challenges you to believe that lots of money (bootleg alcohol days) and help from a few (one or two) white folks led to the development of the main character, King Leroi Tremayne, as a man not to be messed with and subsequently his grandson who learns from grandfather... which, as the story is told, is plausible and believable.

The story was incredibly suspenseful and you could never guess what will happen next or where the story would lead next.

Dion Graham is an excellent narrator... He brought life into each character. I will listen to him again.

overall good read once the story starts moving along its a great read. Suspensful, thrilling, tear jerker. truly enjoyable.

This was an okay book to me. I had a hard time with it, but it has a good ending.

The plot fell flat

I was excited to read this book, it looked cute and I listen to lots of christian books. This one fell short of my expecations. The author spent to much time delving into the problems of both leads of the book. The idea of the story was fun, but all energy seemed to go into talking about their demons and very little time into the plot. I would look for another read and not spend my money on this one.

The tragic story....

I loved Hoffman's first books but her tone has turned darker and depressing as the years go by. I keep hoping to find the magic of her first books only to be more and more disappointed. No doubt both the reading and the writing quality are good. However, I wish this was a happier story showing how violent acts can destroy not only the damaged child but have the power to destroy a entire famil with a little less of tragedy. I wonder why Claire never told Annie, or her other sister Meg the reason behind the anger that consumed Elf considering the family's unity and love. Overall, the tale could have been sunnier without deviating from the intent. When I read for pleasure I want to feel hopeful not to feel sad, for that I only have news to read the news. I had a lot of trouble finishing to hear this book. So unless you want to be bummed for the fun of it, spend your money elsewhere or check the book from your local library.

Another great Hoffman story but not the narrator

Alice Hoffman again throws you into an eerie mood of demons and evil and passionate love that sweeps you away, but also love that is calm, and trustworthy. Another listen I stayed out in the garden weeding because I couldn't stop. BUT, the narrator's accent was way too strong. New York or New Jersey, which ever it did not match the characters well. The young girls sounded like middle age women talking fake high voices. She also kept laughing as the narrator, which made the narrator parts (which are large portions of Alice Hoffman's books, distracting and not just build the background mood and ambiance.

Great Book - Bad Reader

While I enjoyed the book itself, I found the poor quality of the reader very distracting. Specifically the reader cannot seem to pronounce "d" as in husban(d) or "ed" as in ask(ed) or as(ked) - so instead of saying "she asked" the reader would say "she ass" or "she ask". She also continually pronounced "she would" or "he would" as sh'd or hid, or he had as "h'd". This poor pronounciation drove me nuts.

Great story, AWFUL NARRATOR!!

I love the story, but Delilah has NO BUSINESS being a narrator. She is loud, she reads too fast, she is just plane obnoxious to listen to.

The book was what I expected

I've listened to all the Blossom St. books and enjoyed them. From now on though I will pay closer attention to who's reading. Delilah just didn't do it for me.

I have enjoyed Debbie Macomber's books and I really like Delilah as a radio host, but she needs to stick to that and not try to read books to adults!

This is such a wonderful story about so many lives that touch each other..sadly the narrator was so horrible it was all ruined. The narrator rushed reading the book in places it was hard to follow.

This book is unlike Ted's other books bc it doesn't really focus on Christ love but it does talk about love. God's love and about a person's need for love in general. Ted Dekker is the best author and his need to share our savior's love for everyone of us is told in his stories.

I did not like the whining main character. I set the book aside for over 2 months. I came back to it started all over again. I ended up absolutely loving the book!

Knit Two

Was interesting to see what happens to these characters, but the book seems so passive. There is a lot of narrative of what the characters are thinking - or their circumstances - but not as much smart dialogue as in the first.

I was disappointed.

not so predictable sequel

I very much enjoyed the sequel probably more so than The Friday Night Knitting Club because I had the ending ruined by reading a review on here! Anyway, on a picky note I was bothered that Peri's voice was different in this recording. She sounded very much like James and she kept Dakota's voice so very whiny but these are not the author's fault. I enjoyed that everything was wrapped up but it seemed very much like it was a checklist about what happened to everyone. Overall I enjoyed it though. I am not too picky about books as long as they are believable and keep my attention. I missed Georgia as much as the characters did!

Really Disappointed

I am a big fan of the Friday Night Knitting Club, and was excited to read/listen to the sequel. I couldn't have been more disappointed. This book failed me both in writing and narration.

I found the narration irritating and the characters annoying. For example, it seemed to me that Dakota's character aged in the book but was read in an excessively whiny voice. I felt very little sympathy for the characters, whose growth over the years seemed minimal.

Truth to tell, I found all of the characters I loved in the first book almost unbearable in this one. It's a shame.

Regret Central

The double standard of a strong female front, juxtaposed with endless neurotic second guesses, self recrimination and doubt. it becomes heavy and dull. The storyline is ok, yet forced at times. I spotted the "twist" before it came. James putters off into the ether...the reader gives him and Peri torally wrong accents. All the whining doesn't make it worth it. They could have eased up on the non stop neurotic flow. The author needs to read the Power Of Now and then do an epilogue!!!

Good second book

I was nervous at first to learn this story continued, but was wonderfully surprised. I can relate to the characters in a completely different way than I did in the first novel. Great follow up, hope to learn more of the club in the future!

Get Your Post-Colonial Gatsby ON!

One of the best post-9/11 and postcolonial books I've read. Easily in the same infield as Delillo's post-9/11 short novels ('Falling Man', 'Cosmopolis', 'Point Omega'). In someways it surpasses these shorter Delillo works and stands closer to 'Underworld'. Besides the obvious Baseball vs. Cricket, Underworld and Netherland are looking at the same point from the views of New Yorker in New York vs Immigrant in New York, and Big vs. Small. Also, at the same time 'Netherland' is a retelling of 'The Great Gatsby'. I only recognized this after reading James Wood's New Yorker review, but all it took was the briefest mention of Gatsby and the floodgates opened. Anyway, brilliant.

Very good book, excellent Narrator

THis book came as somewhat of a surprise, I didn't think I would be in the mood, but it starts off so well and the reader is so good, I just couldn't put it down and was engaged before I could protest. THe reader's accents were perfect and the tone was so perfect for the character, I must say I was very impressed with both the reading and the very moving story told in such an associative way rather than chronologically--I liked that. I look forward to hearing the book again soon, I read it so fast the first time I want time to savor it more slowly again.

Why You Should Read Netherland

Essentially a novel for men (lots of sports and sports metaphors), this is a book about a guy whose wife dumps him and who ends up living alone in post-911 New York City. Cricket is his salvation, and through it he becomes involved with a fascinating West Indian subculture. It's a book about human migration, about love and work and sex and the loss of a charismatic (and enigmatic) friend. Wonderfully written and narrated.

I was somewhat shocked to read other reviews that derided this book as boring and pointless.

Very Rewarding Listen

This was great!

If you enjoy Glenn Beck on the radio, then you'll appreciate the fact this book was read by Glenn himself. The narration is perfect. I was glued to his story till the very end.

I'm not the type to write a review, but, I feel this book has given me something. So, in the simple act of giving back I felt compelled to write a little something nice. My way of saying thanks.

Hard to say.... if I'd read it at a different time of the year, it'd probably be mid to high favorites range. Listening to it in December, it was near the top! Just the kind of story I wanted to hear to remind me about the real spirit of Christmas.

I had to stop listening for a few days after one chapter's close devastated me.

This is the final book of the O'Malloy's series. I have listened to the entire series and I find this final installment to be one of the best. Dee Henderson continues to do a very good job mixing both christian undertones with both romance and mystery.

I have all the O'Mally stories,and loved them all, but Stephens' story was my favorite. This is a very good series, well written, good plots and well thought out characters.I will be looking for more Dee Hendersen stories. Tom Stechschulte did a very fine job with the narration too. Thank you for bringing interesting fiction with the truth of Jesus in them.

I rarely enjoy romance novels but Im finding so many Christian novels that I consider mysteries are often rated as such. Dee Henderson did an excellent job on both the mystery and romance angle in the book.

This book is on my own personal Top 10 List....

....of all the books I have ever read. I adore this book and I love the way Alice Hoffman writes. This book was the second book I read of hers and I was blown away by her prose...the way she used nature throughout the book to pull the story together....she makes you feel as though you could see and smell the flowers and green grass....feel the rain or dew.....the bitter cold of winter.....the warmth of spring breezes....she is an amazing writer and this story made me fall in love with her writings and will be a forever fan!..

Would you try another book from Alice Hoffman and/or Laural Merlington?

Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite authors. She has a wonderful way of bring stories to life with just the right touch of supernatural. I have read almost all of her books and was excited to listen to this older book by her. Her newer titles are read by other narrators, including Nancy Travis who I really enjoy. The narration by Laural Merlington was horrible here. The speed was impossibly fast. I would have listened to it at 1/2 speed but the sound was so distorted that way. There were no pauses at the end of paragraphs or chapters. In the end, I gave up on listening to this book and only listened to a few chapters in. I was very disappointed in this audiobook.
