A Man Most Driven to Create His Own Legend

This biography of John Smith turned out to be a pleasant surprise. British narrator Barnaby Edwards, is perfect for the story. He keeps the link to England alive. Smith's story is filled with swashbuckling tales that often raise questions about Smith's truthfulness. The author analyzes Smith's story in an attempt to decipher what is truth and exaggeration, making this an example of biographical sleuthing. There are many surprises to discover including the fact that Smith was a pioneering writer of the autobiography. By the end of Peter Firstbrook's biography of John Smith readers will realise that Smith actually created his own legend.

What did you love best about McCarthy for President?

I loved McCarthy the person-a political figure with tremendous character-very different than those cliché politicians who base every move on polls and strategic calculations.

What other book might you compare McCarthy for President to and why?

Not sure-but McCarthy almost reminds me of people from my father's generation: a "salt of the Earth" kind of guy!

Which scene was your favorite?

How McCarthy went to bed one night rather than stay up late to meet with an important political contributor-in general, I found his general unwillingness to solicit campaign contributions to be hilarious!

Great Description of Campaign Life

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, and I have. As someone who has worked on political campaigns, it was fun and nostalgic to hear about another one.

What about Charles Henderson Normans performance did you like?

I kept believing he was the author.

It's fun to know how/why Johnson lost and how it changed the course of the Presidency.

I bought this book thinking it was by Mark Steyn... after a bit of listening, I realized my error.

Good title and idea...never really takes off

This book was a really good idea that the author did not seem ready for. The book wanders in topics and does a poor job of building bridges between the different historical accounts yet the author keeps discussing the history as though it is all related and has similar aspects. The parallels of history might be there but they are not found in this book. It is a shame. This could have been really good.

Great history!

Anatomy of A Hustle

I like very much the Anatomy of a Hustle:Cable Comes to South Central LA. Tom Bradley & Black city council members were a disgrace.

Who knew that someone was trying to use cable television for good?

Anatomy of a Hustle is both enlightening and horrifying. Mayor Tom Bradley is known to be a great man around Los Angeles and to read this first-hand account that that reputation is wholly incorrect is wildly surprising. That Bradley would turn his back on the people of South Central; that he was involved in the subversion of justice; that he was only out to maintain his power and make money for his friends is hard to hear. What a great loss for South Centralâs citizens. Given whatâs going on in Washington right now, itâs no surprise that this is how government really works. So damned typical: politicians are politicians.

A MUST Read

Ordinarily when we read a book that details political corruption and tyranny, the author is usually a crime reporter, an undercover law enforcement officer or a whistle blower. In âAnatomy of a Hustle: Cable comes to South Central L. A.â the story teller and eyewitness is a major party to these events and also a victim of the nefarious shenanigans perpetrated by those officials and their representatives. The perpetrators were serving in fiduciary relationships with the story teller, his brother, other partners, and the primary and biggest victim: the community of South Central L. A..

The saga is told in poignant chilling details that not only puts the reader in the room, but also in the emotional seat of the author/victim, Clinton Galloway. Mr. Galloway is superb in recounting years of countless unethical, improper and illegal bribes, camouflaged as valid proposals by evil, mean-spirited, immoral, greedy and shameless men. He recounted endless meetings called for nothing but another opportunity to push the agenda they didnât achieve at the last meeting; and it typically called for even more dastard deeds. Anatomy revealed the underbelly of a corrupt culture perpetrated by men who betrayed every tenet of decency and justice. There are many books on political corruption, but none have taken you to the place Anatomy takes you: a front row seat, deep into the recesses of tyranny. For those who were living in Los Angeles at the time, you feel an even greater betrayal by those sworn to serve and protect the community.

The poor conditions, the retarded growth and the lack of parity with other communities of South Central L. A. that continues to exist today, is well documented. Many observers blame the situation on those who burned and looted their own neighborhood.

An Inclusive History for Young People

Howard Zinn's classic history of the US from the viewpoint of the Native Americans, slaves, and other underdogs has not only been revised for young people, it INCLUDES the history of young people; young sailors on Columbus's ships, young soldiers, young servants.

This is an essential companion to the standard history we were taught in school. Zinn takes Churchills famous line, History is written by the victors, and turns it upside down. He writes, Every historians own ideas and beliefs go into the way he or she writes history, and he takes the view of more than just the conquerers and leaders. He gives a voice to the vanquished.

In this young peoples version, violence of American history has not been whitewashed, but it has been made less graphic, and all has been simplified, though certainly not dumbed down.

Jeff Zinns narration keeps it all clear and steers away from the strident outrage that could so easily creep in to the subject.

Compellingly written and inclusive, this is a great listen.

Amazingly Insightful!

Thought you knew US history? Great listen for another perspective of our past. I'm going to use the book for lessons in critical thinking for my US History students!

Balance to the official history

When I read that an Arizona Senator was trying to have the full, original version of this book banned from classroom, I of course had to find out its content. Official history textbooks are valuable but grossly incomplete. Argument against the "People's History of US" was it's extreme leftist bias. I think that since we are talking about facts, that argument is noting more than partisan nonsense, since facts don't have bias, they just are. Now, it's true that the book paints a very dark and at times (or even often) appealing picture of United States and it's people but that's because like the other texts it presents selective information. DIFFERENCE is that not just one but time and time again, the author tells you this and points out that it's not the official version, or COMPARES events to the official version, therein letting you know it's not the ONLY version of the events. No book is a COMPLETE coverage of anything, history or filed or even a story. As such this book NEEDS to be part of every school's curriculum.

According to Louis Michael Seidman, it's time to stop.

In On Constitutional Disobedience, Seidman argues that, in order to bring our basic law up to date, it needs benign neglect. This is a highly controversial assertion. The doctrine of "original intent" may be found on the far right, but the entire political spectrum - left and right - shares a deep reverence for the Constitution. And yet, Seidman reminds us, disobedience is the original intent of the Constitution. The Philadelphia convention had gathered to amend the Articles of Confederation, not toss them out and start afresh. The "living Constitution" school tries to bridge the gap between the framers and ourselves by reinterpreting the text in light of modern society's demands. But this attempt is doomed, Seidman argues.

One might stretch "due process of law" to protect an act of same-sex sodomy, yet a loyal-but-contemporary reading cannot erase the fact that the Constitution allows a candidate who lost the popular election to be seated as president. And that is only one of the gross violations of popular will enshrined in the document. Seidman systematically addresses and refutes the arguments in favor of Constitutional fealty, proposing instead that it be treated as inspiration, not a set of commands. The Constitution is, at its best, a piece of poetry to liberty and self-government. If we treat it as such, the author argues, we will make better progress in achieving both.

Important and eye opening book!!

Readable and simple to follow -- lots to think about!

Imagine a lawyer who writes so entertainingly about the law! He makes a provocative argument and does his best to stay away from personal politics. This would make a superb book club book. If you can get your members to read it, they'll enjoy it and have lots to discuss!

Good point, but could have been better written

He had a good point, but he could have said it much better than he did. I think this book is based on an article he previously wrote. I'd recommend just reading the shorter article.

Ultimately Untenable Thesis, But Worthwhile

I tend to view Seidman's thesis less as a product of sincere belief than as a dialectical exercise intended to lead to a deeper understanding of constitutional law.
