    Title: Twenty-Three Minutes to Eternity
Subtitle: The Final Voyage of the Escort Carrier USS Liscome Bay
    Author: James L. Noles Jr.
    Narrator: David Randall Hunter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-15-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
A long-overdue history of America's "forgotten flattop". On November 24, 1943, a Japanese torpedo plunged into the starboard side of the American escort carrier USS Liscome Bay. The torpedo struck the thin-skinned carrier in the worst possible place the bomb storage area. The resulting explosion could be seen 16 miles away, literally ripping the Liscome Bay in half and killing 644 of the crew. In terms of lives lost, it was the costliest carrier sinking in United States naval history. Liscome Bay's loss came on its first combat operation: the American invasion of the Gilbert Islands. Despite its short career, it touched a number of remarkable and famous lives. Doris Miller, the first black American sailor to win the Navy Cross, lost his life, as did Rear Admiral Henry Mullinax, one of the Navy's first "air admirals". John Crommelin was the senior officer to survive the sinking. Later in his career, Crommelin, a decorated naval aviator himself, sparked the famous Revolt of the Admirals, which helped save the role of naval aviation in America's Cold War military.
James Noles' account of the Liscome Bay and those who served aboard is based on interviews with the ship's survivors and an unpublished memoir that the ship's pay officer made available to the author. This compelling audiobook pays homage to the crew by telling their story of experience and sacrifice.
    Critic Reviews:
"The author's ability to stitch together the individual accounts of crew members into a moving history of the short life and sudden death of Liscome Bay makes this book a fascinating read." (Jeffrey G. Barlow, author of
Revolt of the Admirals: The Fight for Naval Aviation, 1945-1950)

My favorites were the ones who became outcasts such as McGriffin and Walker and some of the other `colorful' character
This wonderful book was penned by a man who was intimately familiar with the world in all its wonderful and terrible glory. As a top journalist and war correspondent Davis had seen and experienced it all, and this uniquely qualified him to write thrilling works from the perspective of someone in the know. He writes his books the way that only an insider can, not an insider sitting on the throne of power, but one who is standing right there next to it, hearing and seeing everything, when he isn't out in the field dodging bullets.
In this book he tells the stories of a wide variety of soldiers of fortune. Though I'm a big fan of Churchill, my favorites were the ones who became outcasts such as McGriffin and Walker and some of the other `colorful' characters. Whether they were hailed as rogues or heroes, they were all very courageous men who led fascinating lives.
    Real Men or Fearless Fools?
Great read. Specially the chapter on young Winston. There was some detail in this I had not read before. The other unknowns were certainly worthy of their places in this book. Interesting point that this book appears to have been written about 1930?? Anyway, there is much to like about the gung ho attitude of these "soldiers" as it is most believable and when looking for modern day equivalents stands alone without challenge. Take a quick read. I am sure you will find it enjoyable.
    Entertaining and educational
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It was entertaining and informative, and I learned the sometimes sad stories of those men who were true "originals". The subjects of this book are not ones we have learned of in normal educational channels. Some of them are related in some way to people we learned about in school, although most of these men were previously unknown to me. They did, however, each have a distinct impact on the world of their time.
    Good read
    Good read
Hard to see Churchill as a soldier of fortune, ...
Hard to see Churchill as a soldier of fortune, as he clearly appeared at the time, before his political rise. The others are held up a paragons when in fact, you would likely disagree. It's interesting to ponder how single individuals can have such devastating impact on events and yet be thought heroes by many.

Title: A Scientific Way of War
Subtitle: Antebellum Military Science, West Point, and the Origins of American Military Thought - Studies in War, Society, and the Military
    Author: Ian Clarence Hope
    Narrator: Kevin F Spalding
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-04-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
A Scientific Way of War analyzes how the doctrine of military science evolved from teaching specific Napoleonic applications to embracing subjects that were useful for war in North America. Drawing from a wide array of materials, Ian C. Hope refutes earlier charges of a lack of professionalization in the antebellum American army and an overreliance on the teachings of Swiss military theorist Antoine de Jomini. Instead, Hope shows that inculcation in West Point's American military curriculum eventually came to provide the army with an officer corps that shared a common doctrine and common skill in military problem solving. The proliferation of military science ensured that on the eve of the Civil War there existed a distinctly American, and scientific, way of war.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is required reading for anyone who would understand generalship and high command in the American Civil War." (Richard J. Sommers, senior historian emeritus, U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, U.S. Army War College)
"Truly original.... No other scholar has so successfully explained what Americans understood by the phrase 'military science' as taught-and modified over time-at West Point." (Peter Maslowski, author of Looking for a Hero: Joe Ronnie Hooper and the Vietnam War)
"A detailed, thoughtful, and provocative explanation of the evolution of the U.S. Army's understanding of military science and why this scientific view of war was so important in the nation's military history and to the conduct of the Civil War." (Brian McAllister Linn, author of The Echo of Battle: The Army's Way of War)
    Members Reviews:
    A New Perspective on History
This was extremely eye opening. Looking at Antebellum American History through the lens of not just battles and generals, but the science and theory behind those battles. I had no idea that the enlightenment had such an effect on military thought. Extremely fascinating!
A Scientific Way of War is a big win!
Would you listen to A Scientific Way of War again? Why?
I would listen to A Scientific Way of War again. The narration by Kevin F. Spalding was engaging, holding my attention and interest throughout the entire audiobook. I was fascinated to learn about the Enlightenment's influence on military science and the focus on math, science, and engineering in the education of West Point cadets from the 18th century up to the Civil War, and even still today.
What other book might you compare A Scientific Way of War to and why?
Personally, I had never listened to a book comparable to A Scientific Way of War. I am one who tends to gravitate towards military biographies, and Ian C. Hope's material was more technical and scholarly in nature than most books in my library. However, I am thankful for the recommendation and the insight I gained by listening to this book.
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene came towards the end when Ian C. Hope examines the Civil War and the fact that West Point had produced leaders on both sides well versed in the art of military science, who ultimately face off on the field of battle.

    Title: Perilous Missions
Subtitle: Civil Air Transport and CIA Covert Operations in Asia
    Author: William Leary
    Narrator: Gregg Rizzo
    Format: Unabridged

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-13-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks

    Publisher's Summary:
Civil Air Transport (CAT), founded in China after World War II by Claire Chennault and Whiting Willauer, was initially a commercial carrier specializing in air freight. Its role quickly changed as CAT became first a paramilitary adjunct of the Nationalist Chinese Air Force, then the CIA's secret "air force" in Korea, then "the most shot-at airline in the world" in French Indochina, and eventually becoming reorganized as Air America at the height of the Vietnam War. William M. Leary's detailed operational history of CAT sets the story in the perspective of Asian and Cold War geopolitics and shows how CAT allowed the CIA to operate with a level of flexibility and secrecy that it would not have attained through normal military or commercial air transportation.

My thanks to a great bunch of aviators!
This book opened my eyes in-depth to the operations of C.A.T. in Asia. Since being a Vietnam veteran, I have immersed myself in the history of that part of the world from Chennault's Flying Tigers to the Mayaquez debacle. This book takes a close up look at the brave & perilous missions that were performed in support of Chiany kai Shek's China by these aviatiors and their successors Air America. I was privileged to work alongside some A.A. veterans in south Texas while flying electronic contraband across the Rio Grande into Mexico. My book: Over & Back by Wild Bill Callahan follows a few of them on their final quest of living life on the edge. Available on Amazon.
A detailed and scholarly description of the formation and operation of CAT
A detailed and scholarly description of the formation and operation of CAT, before and after its acquisition by the CIA. Not as a criticism, but as a caution, I would suggest that the details of the first roughly 100 pages are rather tedious, describing as they do the struggles of the company as a legitimate airline before its acquisition by the CIA; however, it is necessary to read this material to come to an understanding of how the CIA came to be involved. So, be patient.
    Excellent Professional Job
Many readers will buy this books for the tales of covert flights over Manchuria, North Korea and Indo-China and it certainly delivers. But of equal interest is how does an intelligence service buy and then operate a proprietary while maintaining plausible deniability. Thanks to the diligent research of the author we know the trials and tribulations involved. I'm sure most readers would think when faced with administrative difficulties the CIA would just go in and wave their magic wand and all the roadblocks dissolve. As the book point out the US government had all the leverage in the world with the Nationalist government on Taiwan and it was still a trial to keep CAT operating on the island. Also CAT's books were a nightmare for years until they got professional accounting (not something one immediately thinks about when discussing covert flights over the PRC). A must read for the serious student of intelligence.
If you are thinking of buying this ... do so
Totally awesome! Massive amounts of information that doevetails well with other material. Worth the money to any student of US covert operations after WW2.
    EXCELLENT BOOK ON CAT
This is a very interesting and well researched book on the origin and operations of CAT. It is sad that Dr.

This early attack did not lead to widespread defensive measures. Arron Perry. Rob Furlong. Craig Harrison.
    Legendary snipers.
In researching the competition for who had the longest distance kill in military history, the majority of laymen would expect to see a Navy SEAL or a Marine heading the top of the list. A little research, however, shows the top three long-shot kills are Craig Harrison (United Kingdom), Rob Furlong (Canada), and Arron Perry (Canada).
The late Chris Kyle, of American Sniper fame, is eighth on the list. There is a South African Special Forces sniper that is sixth on the list whose name is withheld as is a Norwegian Army sniper.
Snipers operate under the motto of not boasting about their kills. In the defense of the top three snipers listed above, they have all been outed by the media or their own military. Harrison's name had been released after he made the record-setting kill and had to go into hiding. Furlong and Perry's had similar circumstances with the media after being investigated for conduct unbecoming.
This book will take a look at the feats the men above performed on the battlefield as well as the psychological toll that the sniper profession had on their lives.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-22-15
    Publisher: Saucerian Press
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
Were UFOs developed by the Nazis? Did Hitler move to war too fast, before his scientists had a chance to develop copies of saucer prototypes developed in Southern Germany, and were these deliberately delayed - by "good" Germans and Allied spies - for humanitarian reasons?
This and more can be found in this audiobook by Ernst Zundel, the infamous "holocaust denier" who, like so many agent-provocateurs, released solid information, only to see that information "smeared" - by chance or by design - by their own personal failings.
This audio examines Operation Highjump (the Antarctic Nazi base), Hitler's drive to produce various types of UFOs, and discusses the need for "Disclosure". The material is thought-provoking, and gives credence to the Nazi development of flying saucers.
UFOs: Nazi Secret Weapons? has been banned in dozens of countries, with the author claiming he has been held as a political prisoner for the last quarter of a century. The author hints at a possible connection between the appearance of UFOs in large numbers and Hitler's escape from Berlin.
The startling dossier assembled here has been much-copied in the decades since it was written (1974), with other authors claiming to have discovered this material. However, it was Zundel who first gathered the data and presented it to the world - probably to his everlasting regret.
UFOs: Nazi Secret Weapons? is a must-have for serious UFO researchers as well as collectors of saucer memorabilia.

    Utter claptrap
Far from providing anything even remotely amounting to 'evidence' this book merely regurgitates myth & heresay that serves no informative purpose, while at the same time attempting to portray Adolf Hitler as some sort of far sighted sage who should be revered rather than reviled
The only saving grace this book has is that it is so ridiculous that it serves to portray exponents of this type of fantasy theorising as the charlatans & crackpots that they undoubtedly are

    Save your money, skip it.
This book was a complete waste of time. It was only 50 pages long, and the author used extra large type to eat up space, it was actually about 20 pages long if that. I read it in half an hour.
The author has no understanding of military matters, he confuses rifles with artillery. He seemed to have done his research only by skimming the Internet, he included several of the sites in the page footers rather than elaborate on certain points. There were several typos and the pages were poorly laid out.
He could have saved some time and expanded Simo Hayha's Wikipedia page rather than turn out this "straight to the Kindle bin" bomb.
    My book review
This had the most horrendous editing. Several words have extra letters, some sentences are worded in a multiple person senerio, but the editing has it read as a single person event. There is barely 50 pages in the entire book, and at least 2 or 3 of those are totally blank. Several comments have long black lines running the length of the sentence. Many pages read like a high school student or below had written the pamphlet - book. There are no indepth/detailed parts of the story that convinces me otherwise. THE DEADLIEST SNIPER by Robert Corrigan is definitely NOT worth the money paid. I am harsh, but I am detail oriented. Sgt Mac USMC
Don't waste your money or time
Don't waste your money or time. The author, and I use that term very loosely, get his story from other sources. And it's not even a book, but more of a pamphlet. The actual pages are double spaced and in large print. Very disappointed. Also surprised that Amazon would charge 7.99 for this.
    Waste of time.
This "book" comes across at the level of a high school term paper. It lacks detail, depth and insight and only provides the most superficial information on this most amazing sniper.
    Run! Don't spend your money!
Pretty sure this was written by an 8th grader. Low quality grammar, awkward sentences, repetitive, uninformative... Citations are from random websites. If you're in the 5th grade this might be an alright book; if you're an adult... you might be reading lines out loud to laugh with your friends.
I should also mention that the "book" is 51 pages long and written in huge font. In reality you're buying a pamphlet.

Title: Into the Breach at Pusan: The 1st Provisional Marine Brigade in the Korean War

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-07-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
In the opening campaign of the Korean War, the First Provisional Marine Brigade participated in a massive effort by United States and South Korean forces in 1950 to turn back the North Korean invasion of the Republic of Korea. The brigade's actions loom large in marine lore. According to most accounts, traditional Marine Corps discipline, training, and fighting spirit saved the day as the marines rescued an unprepared US Eighth Army, which had been pushed back to the "Pusan Perimeter" at the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula. Historian and retired marine Kenneth W. Estes undertakes a fresh investigation of the marines' and Eighth Army's fight for Pusan. Into the Breach at Pusan corrects discrepancies in earlier works (including the official histories) to offer a detailed account of the campaign and place it in historical context.
Estes describes the mobilization, organization, and operations of First Brigade during the first three months of American participation in the Korean War. Focusing on the battalions, companies, and platoons that faced the hardened soldiers of the North Korean army, he brings the listener directly to the battlefield. The story he reveals there, woven with the voices of soldiers and officers, is one of cooperation rather than interservice rivalry. At the same time, he clarifies differences in the organizational cultures of the US Army and the Marine Corps.
Into the Breach at Pusan is scrupulously fair to both the army and the marines. Estes sets the record straight in crediting the Eighth Army with saving itself during the Pusan Perimeter campaign, but he also affirms that the army's suffering would have been much greater without the crucial, timely performance of the First Provisional Marine Brigade.
The book was published by University of Oklahoma Press.

The best overall explanation of the major battles in the Vietnam War.
My late father was a Crew Chief/M-60 gunner in Vietnam from 1968-1969 stationed in Ban Me Thuot with The Green Hornets. Although my father spoke very little about his time there I dedicated my life to reading Everything I could about the war in hopes of somehow understanding what he went though so that I might "know" what he went through. I have read many excellent accounts of the battles and skirmishes our great and honorable men and women who served there fought, but this collection of the main battles is by far one of the best I have had the honor to read. I highly recommend this collection to everyone interested in learning about that poorly planned conflict and I truly believe that had the politicians in Washington let the soldiers do their job and and that if the media did their job and reported the truth we could have won. That said, I am incapable of expressing my complete and total gratitude to those brave men and women with my puny words. Thank you for your service and welcome home. And if anyone knew my father Ed Gill please contact me at [email protected]. Once again, thank you for your devotion and service. God Bless all of you. Mike Gill
