Ruined by Narration

Albeit that Christopher Clark is identified as the narrator, no blame should be laid at the author's feet. Instead this appears to be read by a man who has never confronted anything more than a basic reading level. His failure to pronounce even simple words is astonishing. Coup d' etat is pronounced "coop". However the narrator is not alone in ruining this masterful volume. The production and editing are to blame too. Sound quantity changes, sometimes the narrators voice sounds fuzzy, other times a little disembodied. Most frequent is the ever so subtle edits dropped in to the prose. it is so badly done it almost sounds like listening to a telephone call or a radio programme where different speakers voice each new line.

I find all of this a tragedy because the content of the book is so well written, has such a level of detail and research, and is brought together with powerful analysis by Prof Clark. I am afraid Audible (or whoever produced this edition) you have rather short changed Sir Christopher however, with low production values, an incompetent narrator and a sound editor who should hang his head in shame.

A really interesting book. Pretty erudite, and I found I had to be in a committed intellectual 'mood' to get through it - but when I was, it was fascinating and enjoyable. I look forward to finishing it one day :^)

This book would be viewed as controversial because it shakes what we believe to be God given truths. As one reads the book, he/she will either open or close their mind to what is being explained. However, if you give yourself the opportunity to complete the book, you will have changed your perspective on life immensely.

One of the most poignant of ancient histories

Certainly much of the histories from Josephus have been criticized as self-serving. Some of that slant may be based in a misunderstanding of the times where acknowledgement of personal accomplishments was not viewed with the same distrust it is in our time. So whether the telling seems self-serving or not, the pathos and detail that Josephus brings to this telling brings the tale to life and puts us in the midst of the deprivation of ancient insurgency war. Love or hate Josephus, we are forced to acknowledge his gift for communicating the realities of politics and war around the ancient Mediterranean.

A point must be made as well to commend Charlton Griffin's wonderful performance in the audio version of this book. It will be one worth listening to again and again.

Bridge the gap from bible to history!

Bought this for my father for Christmas. Since he has retired he loves reading more about the Bible and even more into the history of it. This bridges some gaps from a biblical and historical side.

The author accomplishes an interesting merger between factual correct documentation and an entertaining writing style, which makes this book an excellent read

A Clash of Cultures

Don't let my four stars fool you. My rating is based on my interest and understanding level on this subject matter. Author Diana Preston has done a remarkable job in putting together the story of the mutiny that took place on the HMAS Bounty and the founding of Australia and for that she rates five stars. This was a clash of cultures between the British and the natives of Australia and the islands that were visited such as Tahiti.

Passengers and convicts that took part in this story suffered a miserable existence due to the environmental differences from what they knew in England and what they needed to adjust to in these faraway lands. Not having the experience nor the skills needed in this environment led to disharmony and finally to the mutiny of Fletcher Christian and his supporters from Captain William Bligh. To give you a time frame this took place the same year George Washington became president of the United States in 1789.

This is a good book to be an arm chair witness to rather than to have been there personally. It has flared tempers, struggles in adaptation to the environment, second guessing of decisions some individuals made, and sexually transmitted diseases that took place with the females on Tahiti. The book contains sixteen pages of photographs and, in addition to doing a lot of research, the author also spent time in many of the areas she writes about in the book..

Only King survived to tell the tale. Yet, despite their tragic fates, the names of Burke and Wills have become synonymous with perseverance and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. They live on in our nation's history - and their story remains immediate and compelling.

I found the earlier parts a little slow but then the overall story and how I was told was very engaging I would recommend this to anybody who wants to know about Australian history
