Publisher's Summary:
"Sometimes life gooses you when you're not looking. You might be happily coasting through days in a little New Jersey suburb, dreaming about Jennifer Williams and making plans to see the new movie showing uptown when - bam! - everything changes in an instant. Your family moves overseas and suddenly you're hacking at water demons with a four-foot blade."
Taylor Davis didn't want to move to the Caribbean, and he certainly doesn't want save the world. But when he's sucked into a supernatural world of angels and their adversaries, that's exactly what he must do.
The Flame of Findul - the sword that guards the Tree of Life - has been allowed to burn out. Taylor and his new teammates must relight it in the forge of Findul the firesmith before the tree falls into the wrong hands. But Findul hasn't been seen for several centuries. And a formidable enemy, one who has eaten of the tree, stands in their way.

Prophecy, Fire, Flame, Swords, and Angels...
I thought this book was pretty awesome. How would you take it, if while trying to grab a hamburger, a girl grabs it first and then out of NOWHERE the floor cracks and they fall into a huge cavern? And then meet their personal guardian angels, are told of their role in a mission. A role that prophecy has revealed. Yeah, it is like the whole world is inside out and upside down.
They even get to visit heaven -- on the "STAFF" side. The other side is for "residents" and that is more permanent than a couple of teens are ready for.
Their mission is to re-light the sword of Findul. Fundul is an angel who hasn't been seen in a long, long time. On the chase are some REALLY bad guys looking for Findul to control the flame.

The adventures are full of emotional realities from both adventurers and their angels. It feels more real this way. The tribulations they face bring out qualities they did not even know they had-- and insecurities, too.
On the other hand, did I mention GADGETS: A whole world of wonderful gadgets. Which they need, because when angels have enemies, you better believe the enemies are BIG TROUBLE.
Cute, appropriate for middle-schoolers, with some clever backstory
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would; it's definitely geared towards a younger age, with some fairly substantial ick-factor that would be appreciated by young boys in general. There's some age-appropriate light romance that is not sexual in any way, which I found refreshing, and there was nothing too crude -- supernatural bodies burst into slime when destroyed. There is some violence, but more of the comic-book variety.
What I really liked about it was the clever handling of Biblical ideas the Tree of Life and connecting some elements of mythology with the greater battle between good and evil. There's nothing wholly new in this handling, as several sci-fi writers have tread this territory before, but I still felt this to be a fresh approach. I liked the main character's personality and the fact that he had to overcome personal insecurities and weaknesses -- it's nice to see a hero who has to grow into that role. The other main characters are fun, sometimes funny, and provide a nice range of attitudes and personalities.
