Great book

Bought this for my child who wanted to read it for a book report. He has seen books by Mr. Higgins in our home and was excited that he good read a book by an author who writes for adults. This book had him sucked in from the beginning and held his attention from start to finish. He highly recommends it to other teen readers.

Death Run

I just love Jack Higgins. He is my favorite author. He can say things and get them across in fewer words than other authors. He can grab my attention and not lose it. Some authors say something in ten pages and Jack Higgins can do the same thing in two pages. Makes for thinner books, but when you get into it and read it too fast, then hate it when you know it is going to end. That's Jack Higgins. This is the first book where teenagers were part of the main theme and they worked very well. Of course, the girl was stronger and tougher than her twin brother, but even so, it was a good book. I love all books by Jack Higgins that I have ever read and that is a very long list.

A Word of Warning and Clarification

Most of the reviews of and comments about "The Magician Trilogy" mention "Harry Potter", (because, well, it's "Harry Potter"), and the Charlie Bone series, (because it's also by Nimmo and it's very much like Potter). Be warned that "The Magician Trilogy" is not anything like those other two sets.

There is no wizarding world, there is no "magic system", there are no spells or incantations. In this series there may be old magic in the hills, and in the memory; there may be mystery in the bones of the earth or the bright eyes of unusual birds; the fog may bring passing enchantment with it on particular nights; but this is not wand waving magic.

These books are moody, indirect and ambiguous, like the old tales themselves. That's certainly not a bad thing, but I would hate to have someone disappointed by this wonderful series because they expected Hogwarts magic and cleverness.

I love this type of book and Jenny Nimmo writes books for all ages. I have read a lot of her series books and if you liked Harry Potter you will like these.

Imaginative writer, nice weave of magic and concerns of childhood. Worth reading -- even owning . Jenny Nimmo is an author to watch out for.

A charming, intelligent children's story

I first heard this story as a little girl and when I saw it was available here I bought it immediately. The story is about elves living in a kitchen and the author manages to bring the world to life, making it magical and yet still recognizable. This story has many interesting characters and ideas. The narrator does a wonderful job and has a beautiful voice. This story is imaginative and I enjoyed just as much listening to it as an adult as I did as a little girl. I would heartily recommend this to others.

Five Stars

good

Strong finish; most rewarding of the three books

If you're read the first two books in this series, you know you're going to like this one. If you haven't read the first two you should, at least in order to get into the flow of the story thus far.

Your reward will be that this is the most "magical" of the books, and will be the one that most closely reflects actual Welsh tales. It's also the most exciting, and the closest to stirring "high fantasy".

And after you finish this, try Susan Cooper's "Dark is Rising" series.

Childhood reads

I love this trilogy, good read for children and even adults if you liked Harry Potter you will like Jenny Nimmo's trilogys. There is also the 7 book series of Charley Bone. They are like popcorn for me.

I had read the first two books in the trilogy and was excited to read the last. The book arrived quickly and was in excellent condition. I enjoyed all three books in the Magician Trilogy, but must say, I liked the first book, "The Snow Spider" the best.

9 yr old loved it

My daughter really enjoyed this book. She said there were some possibly inappropriate things, evocation of menstruation -- but not beyond what she already knows about, just something to be aware of if you are worried about such things. It seems somewhat trashy, but hey, reading should be fun, and everybody likes a little trash sometimes.

A FINE novel

This is a truly wonderful children's novel that everyone can enjoy.It follows a day in the life of a girl named Bonny who is forced to attend a snooty charm school,and is shocked by the shallowness of it's teacher and students.
