One of the best Thai books out there.

If you're starting out learning Thai, get this book as well as Routledge Colloquial. No others are needed at the beginner level. Together, these books will get you to the low intermediate level, well armed to continue on to more advanced studies, and amply equipped for simple conversations with Thai speakers.

One thing I love about this book is the romanization system it uses: it's one of the best out there (though still having its own quirks).

Another thing is that it gets you right into learning to read and write as you learn to speak and listen. All vocabulary lists are coupled with both romanized pronunciation and Thai script.

The lessons are well laid out with useful vocabulary, and everything is explained in a clear and interesting manner.

Difficult

I have just started and the way the lessons are presented is very difficult to follow if you are listening to the cd, you have to use the book along with listening to the CD, otherwise you will have no idea what they are talking about. They speak Thai fairly well, but there is no interpretation in English before or after Thai is spoken. It does have good material.

No bok with translations provided.

This item is only the CD, and as another reviewer noted, without the book which contains the English translations, you will be lost listening just to a bunch of people speaking Thai.

Very easy to use. Simple and gives a great base.

Sorry I Bought It, and I've Bought Them All

Pimsleur, Berlitz, all the Poomsan Becker stuff, I've bought them all. I played this once, packed it away, and I'll never listen again. The speakers speak too fast, there is no clue what they're saying sentence by sentence, and no logical structure that builds on what one has heard. The only thing I might agree with in the other reviews is the idea that you should get Pimsleur first. Pimsleur remains the Gold Standard people. Don't buy this.
