disappointing, misleading

Disappointing. I bought it to learn about food in Taiwan, and all you get is one restaurant in Taipei he visited. One that is in all the guidebooks and that just about any foreign tourist will probably end up trying. I did too. It was very good, but did not need this audio-book. Anyway, the first half of the piece is about the author's food experiences trying Chinese food in New York!

Look elsewhere if you are interested in finding out more about Taiwanese food. Which, by the way, is absolutely excellent, possibly the best Chinese food in the world. Perhaps because in mainland China the rich traditions of Chinese food were repressed for decades during Maoism, though they are obviously nurtured again to their full, amazing variety.

Inspirational

The banter of Theroux's love for the water and his courageous sense of adventure really grabbed me.I have often found riding kayaks relaxing and excellent exersize also.The writer and his quest to find extraordinary places that are unconventional and charecterize them with descriptive and personal information is sometimes even better than being there.His commentaries on politics are also welcoming,since his views are equally unconventional.As a man who has travel many parts of the known world he provides an intresting perspective on how the whole thing really works.The fact that he takes his time and uses ordinary transportation puts him in touch with the local peoples true lives and makes me realize that life isn't about racing head long in search of things,but stopping to savor the moments we have before us.

Couldn't Hang On

I got through part 1 of 3, but the stories became deeper and deeper and less about the trip and journey they were on and more about historical events surrounding the people they met. The story was very interesting, and I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't started dragging.

I made it through have of the second part and had to quit. On to my next book.

This truly is a mosey... if you are into a very slow moving book and good stories, this will work for you. If you are looking for story and adventure, you may want to pass.

Blue Highways this is NOT

At roughly halfway through, I found I'd fast-forwarded through as much of the book as I'd read (if not more) -- time to move on. Lots and lots of historical background, as well as personal asides, between the moments of actual travel narrative.

If you've ever watched a nature documentary chances are you've seen and heard him before. You just don't get any better than this.

all of his titles. Seriously. it's almost too meta to hear David Attenborough reading about David Attenborough.

his voice. No one else could have narrated this book. No one else should ever narrate this book. David should read EVERY book ever.

I was hooked from the first word and started it right over again after I heard the last.

There's a reason he's "Sir" David Attenborough

Brilliantly written and brilliantly read.

Plenty of humour, very evocative descriptions of wildlife and the comments on aboriginal paintings interesting and enlightening. Mix this with David Attenborough's excellent reading and you have a first class listen!

As usual David Attenborough relates his adventures and encounters with eclectic individuals with such detail and clarity that you are as immersed in the scene as if you were actually present and participating in the conversations. Very entertaining narrative and colourful characters.

As usual he doesnt dissapoint. His lovely voice so easy to listen to and the details so fascinating. I cant turn it off!!!
