Discovering French Elegance: The Prive Vineyard Story in Oregon's Willamette Valley

Listen Later

Join us on a journey to Prive Vineyard, a hidden gem in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In this podcast, we revisit a captivating newsletter from July 10th, 2021, as we explore the enchanting story of Prive and its transition under the ownership of Piper Underbrink.

The 4th of July celebration sets the stage for this adventure, much like the anticipation of lighting fireworks. A chance discovery through Rusty, the Prince of Pinot, leads us to the previous owners, Mark and Tina Hammond, who lived the dream life for any wine enthusiast.

With original vines planted in Jory soil, the transition to Pinot Noir in 1995 marked a pivotal moment for Prive. Tina, managing winemaking duties, and Mark, running a hardware store in town, crafted a remarkable legacy. Rusty's description of driving up to Prive in 2006 sets the scene, where aged wine barrels and a sign reading "Rue du Prive" welcome visitors to a slice of France in the Chehalem Mountains.

In 2018, the Hammonds decided to pass the torch, and on October 20th, 2020, Piper Underbrink took the reins. Piper's journey, from catching the wine bug while working at Flowers Vineyard to her partnership with her dad and eventually acquiring Prive, adds a new chapter to this tale.

As we delve into the visit, Piper's warmth and the quaint tasting room create a unique atmosphere. Tasting the exquisite 2019 Prive Pinots reveals the subtle but impactful influence of terroir. The elevation and slight soil differences bring distinct characters to these wines.

Piper's dedication to preserving the legacy of Prive is evident, and her commitment to sourcing more fruit hints at exciting new offerings, including a potential Chardonnay with Pinot from Ribbon Ridge.

Join us in savoring the story, the wines, and the essence of Prive Vineyard. And when you make that reservation, don't forget to tell Piper that A.J. sent you. The adventure continues, and the joy of living is found in every bottle at Prive Vineyard. Cheers! 🍇🍷 #PriveVineyard #OregonWine #WineAdventure
